The Rotary Club of Boston #7 and Rotary clubs worldwide are mobilizing resources to deliver urgently needed relief and ShelterBoxes to the millions affected by Haiti's devastating earthquake. ShelterBox has already delivered more than 3,300 containers to Haiti, with another 1,000 or more scheduled to be deployed. Each box contains a tent that houses 10 people as well as a stove, water purification equipment, and other essential items. Doctors have been using supplies from the containers to treat the injured. Hospitals in the capital city are using the tents to provide emergency shelter for postoperative patients.
A ShelterBox tent was on display in two locations (The Boston Park Plaza Hotel and the Copley Place Mall). Members of the Rotary Club of Boston #7, the seventh Rotary club established in the world and celebrating 100 years of Service Above Self, volunteered for a week to explain Rotary's emergency relief projects in Haiti and facilitate donations. The price of a complete Shelter Box is $1,000 (US), but smaller donations are also gratefully accepted. Click here to donate to ShelterBox.

The mission of the John A. Volpe National Transportation Systems Center is to improve the nation's transportation systems. Established in 1970 to provide analytical, scientific, and engineering support to the newly established U.S. Department of Transportation, the Center seeks to be the leading federal center of excellence for innovative transportation systems solutions. One of the Center's four strategic goals is to continuously develop the Center's human capital by demonstrating a strong commitment to diversity through increased staffing from groups with less than expected participation rates. When Atinuke "Tinu" O. Diver joined the Volpe Center in 2007, she created a Diversity Speakers Series to support and complement ongoing efforts throughout the Center to meet this goal.

Almost
100 years ago, iconic Nobel Peace Prize Laureate (and Rotarian) Dr.
Albert Schweitzer founded the now-famous Schweitzer Hospital in
Lambaréné, Africa. Today, Dr. Schweitzer's legacy lives on through The
Albert Schweitzer Fellowship (ASF), which works to reduce health
disparities by supporting 230 graduate students annually as they
partner with community agencies to develop and implement service
projects with a direct - and lasting - impact on the health of under served communities.
ASF CFO, Ian Stevenson, introduced this
nonprofit organization and the inspiring "leaders in service" it
supports. These 2,000 Schweitzer Fellows are becoming an unstoppable
force in helping our nation address disparities in health and health
care. They are Dr. Schweitzer's living legacy.

Senator Scott Brown has led the fight in Massachusetts against wasteful government spending and higher taxes. He is a free-market advocate who believes our strength as a nation flows from its people. He believes in a culture of family, patriotism and freedom. At his September 12 announcement of candidacy for the U.S. Senate, Senator Brown articulated a core set of beliefs that guide his thinking.
- Government is too big and that the federal stimulus bill made government bigger instead of creating jobs
- Taxes are too high and are going higher if Congress continues with its out-of-control spending
- The historic amount of debt we are passing on to our children and grandchildren is immoral

Qn March 1, 2010, Massachusetts' Data Protection law becomes effective. The provisions of this law will require every Massachusetts business to implement specific administrative, technological and physical controls to protect customer and employee information. The potential cost to a business for a single instance of compromised confidential personal information is $5,000.
John Moynihan is President of Minuteman Governance, Inc., a Massachusetts consultancy that provides information security services throughout the public and private sectors. Prior to founding Minuteman, John was Deputy Commissioner and Internal Control Officer at the Massachusetts Department of Revenue.

Dr. Thomas M. McGovern, President of Fisher College, discussed the College's Center for Leadership in Public Service. The center was created to bring students, staff, practitioners, and external partners together to positively impact the public service sector. Dr. McGovern presented some of the initiatives the center has undertaken, including safety programming, benchmarking projects, and survey distribution and analysis.

Boston Rotary #7 club members and their families and prospective members spent a day on beautiful Nantucket island. Traveling from Hyannis in the morning via ferry boat, they enjoyed the morning exploring the town center with its cobblestone streets, cute shops and artist studios. They joined the Nantucket Rotary Club for the luncheon meeting at the Fairgrounds Restaurant and then went to Eileen O'Connell's cottage in Madaket for swimming and games on the beach and a BBQ before the ferry ride back to Hyannis.

Vice Admiral Kevin M. McCoy spoke about the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), which is the largest of the U.S. Navy's five "systems commands," or materiel organizations. NAVSEA consists of four shipyards, eight "warfare centers" (two undersea and six surface), four major shipbuilding locations and the NAVSEA headquarters, located at the Washington Navy Yard, in Washington D.C.. NAVSEA's primary objective is to engineer, build and support the U.S. Navy's fleet of ships and combat systems. NAVSEA accounts for nearly one-fifth of the Navy's budget, with more than 100 acquisition programs under its oversight.

The Paget family, who own and operate the Swan Boats, were honored for a over a century of service to Boston. The Swan Boats are a fleet of pleasure boats operating on the lake of the Boston Public Garden in Boston, Massachusetts. The boats have been operating since the 1870s, and have become a cultural icon for the city of Boston.

"Dr. Fred" (as he is affectionately known),is the president of the Greater New England Minority Supplier Development Council.
Dr. McKinney is the son of an attorney who started out working as a sharecropper in Pine Bluff, Arkansas with his sharecropper parents. Dr.Fred's father was urged on by a father who valued education even as it was
denied to him and he struggled his way through college while married with children. And the elevation that education eventually brought to him and his family provided the shoulders that Dr. Fred McKinney would stand on to make his own mark for equality and justice.

Boston Rotary Club #7 made a presentation of $1,600 for the Uniform Fund. Members attended the club meeting luncheon at the school, which was beautifully prepared and served by the sophomore students from the culinary department. The culmination of our Holiday Fund Raiser for the Uniform Fund was a field trip to visit Madison Park High School. Linda Radzvilla, Vocational Director, planned a nice lunch (salad/soup, entree, desert) for us and had kids at our tables so we can talk to them about their experiences.

"A woman on a mission to improve the lives of institutionalized children in Romania"
Eileen O'Connell, RN, is making a difference in the lives of many children. She explained why she is so passionate about Romania, its people and the work of the Romanian Children's Relief. www.RCR.org Romanian Children's Relief began in the spring of 1990 after a BOSTON GLOBE photo-documentary by Photographer, Michael Carroll and Dr. Bill Griffo of New York Hospital/Cornell Medical Center, exposed the plight of the Romanian orphans and the nation's pediatric AIDS epidemic. Due to the overwhelming public response to that news story, a group of dedicated people in New England got together and formed Romanian Children's Relief in Spring, 1990 as a U.S.-based, charitable, non-profit foundation. The group was also incorporated as a Romanian charitable foundation, FUNDATIA INOCENTI, in 1998. RCR/Fundatia Inocenti sent their first relief shipment to Romania in 1990 and currently supports 22 Romanian professional staff working in hospitals, orphanages and foster care programs.
Over the past 15 years, RCR/Inocenti has provided more than $2 Million in personnel; foster family support services, shipments of medical supplies, educational equipment, training exchanges, University tuition, and countless hours of training and support to professionals in the area of child development. While we raise approximately $150,000 in cash donations per year, we support 22 staff people in Romania and deliver more than twice that amount in training services, staff and family support, as well as relief supplies shipped to Romania. Our American and Romanian Board of Directors are all-volunteer. Our offices are housed in the homes of volunteers. We hope you will join us in our mission to help the children. The featured speaker was Gani S. Abazi, MD, MPH. When Gani Abazi was a medical student, he experienced directly the Kosova War in 1998-99 and after the war he has been playing an active role for peace building and reconciliation. As a medical student he has volunteered in health care projects directed by NATO peacekeeping troops in Kosova. Gani is the first Kosova Scholar to be awarded the Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship Award. He studied at Harvard University. Currently he working on a health policy research at the Department of Neurosurgery of Brigham and Women's Hospital and Children's Hospital on how to effectively develop neurosurgery capacities in post conflict developing countries.

Talk about timeliness! The day following the Inauguration of Barack H. Obama as the 44th President of the United States of America, we heard a fascinating presentation on "Presidential elections, polling and political behavior".
Our speaker was D. Sunshine Hillygus, the Frederick S. Danziger Associate Professor of Government at Harvard and one of the country's experts on presidential elections, polling and political behavior. During this past election she has given talks all over the world about the presidential election.

The Boston Rotary Club is proud to support Madison Park Technical Vocational High School as its 2008 holiday Community Service Project. For those of you unfamiliar with Madison Park Technical Vocational High School, it is a Boston Public School within the Boston Rotary Club's territory. Its Mission is to provide an opportunity for young people with a vocational skill while also supplying an academic education. The school helps provide individualized instruction, applied learning and work site experience in order to prepare the kids to succeed in the workforce.
While Madison Park Technical Vocational High School is filled with great teachers and students, it needs help supplying kids with uniforms for training and jobs like Automotive Technology, Nursing Assisting, Culinary Arts, Printing and others (check out their website at http://boston.k12.ma.us/Madisonpk/).
Linda Radzvilla is the Technical/Vocational Coordinator for the school and she came and spoke with the Club. Her passion for the young people was infectious and soon after listening to her talk the Boston Rotary Club called to ask her how it could help. She polled her teachers and administrators and they all agreed that a donation to the Uniform Fund to buy uniforms for the students at Madison Park Technical Vocational High School would be the most effective way for the club.

Rosemary Scozzafava (Principal, Boston Consulting Group) presented an enlightening talk on a powerful consumer trend: Trading up & down. According to the co-author of the book Trading Up, Michael Silverstein (Partner, BCG), "Consumers everywhere have started to adopt a new buying model-one in which they turn to discount stores to fill their pantries, as they strive to watch every dollar, yuan, or euro. But they will also invest in a few significant categories that provide emotional gratification ...it's a good time for suppliers to provide new value, increase innovation, and create goods that consumers can't do without."

Jeffrey C. Fuhrer, Senior VP of Research,Federal Reserve Bank of Boston spoke about "US Economic and Financial Conditions: The Saga Unfolds". He is Executive Vice President and Director of Research at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. His current research program focuses on the development of macro econometric models of inflation, long-term interest rates, monetary policy, consumer spending, and the Phillips curve. Fuhrer's recent journal articles treat the importance of habit formation in consumer spending decisions, the persistence of inflation, the interaction between monetary policy and long-term interest rates, and the failure of new rational expectation models to explain business cycle fluctuations.

Ambassador Charles Shapiro (former ambassador to Venezuela) and currently Senior Trade Coordinator for the Western Hemisphere educated the club about Trade Opportunities in the Western Hemisphere. As Senior Coordinator for Trade in the Western Hemisphere, Ambassador Charles Shapiro has traveled across the nation speaking on the importance of trade for the United States, our partners, and most importantly the American workers. The tremendous growth in U.S. exports has helped to strengthen our economy in a time of financial turmoil. The recently approved trade agreement with Peru and the pending trade agreements with Colombia and Panama will benefit the nation economically by creating new export markets for American products.

Here are the three deserving students to whom we awarded scholarships in June.
$1,000 to Willy Lara - A Jamaica Plain resident, Willy holds the impressive class rank at Madison Park High School of of #4 among 287! Aside from his intellectual ability, he was a star athlete and the football team captain. He plans to attend Framingham State College majoring in Business Administration. Willy's future plan is to one day run his own Auto Shop.
$1,000 to Natalie Greening - Also a Jamaica Plain resident, Natalie Greening excelled in Math throughout her career at Fenway High School. During her senior year, she began taking college courses at Emmanuel College and is currently enrolled in summer classes at Bunker Hill Community College. Natalie plans to transfer to Suffolk University in the fall of 2009 with hopes of becoming an accountant.
$500 to Leidy Arias - Leidy is from Dorchester and is a graduate of Madison Park High School. She is a member of the National Honor Society in addition to being a member of the woman's volleyball and softball teams. Leidy will attend Mass Bay Community College in September where she will study nursing and be the first person in her family to attend college.

Casey Sherman is a bestselling author and journalist who made international headlines with his re-investigation of the notorious Boston Strangler case. It was a personal crusade for the veteran jounalist. Sherman is the nephew of 19-year old Mary Sullivan, believed to be the last victim of the Boston Strangler. Through Sherman's re-investigation, he was able to prove that self-confessed killer Albert DeSalvo did not murder his aunt. Sherman chronicled the re-investigation in his 2003 acclaimed true-crime thriller, A Rose for Mary: The Hunt for the Real Boston Strangler.

Jeffrey Gates, is a partner in Boston's premier restaurants talked about the business and we're not sure how we got him out of the restaurant, but we did. He's a partner in Aquitaine Group which owns Boston's Union Grill, Gaslight Brasserie, Metropolic Cafe, Aquitaine, and Armani Cafe. He talked about what it takes to run a restaurant, and why his partners are so enthusiastic about Boston. He is a 23-year veteran of the restaurant business and remains passionate about it! The key to his success has been outstanding customer service.

Do Europeans and Americans think differently? Can we overcome our differences and cooperate on economic, political, and military needs? We heard answers to this and more by Michael Maibach, founder of the European-American Business Council. Since 2003, Michael Maibach has been the President & CEO of the European-American Business Council, an association of 75 major companies forging policy alliances to enhance Trans-Atlantic investment, innovation and integration. His talk was stimulating and witty and provided insights on how the such strong relations between Europe and the USA have developed.

We got to hear about cultivating trusted relationships with our business clients from the author and guru himself. In our first evening meeting this year, we heard from David Maister, acclaimed business author, former Harvard Business School professor and consultant to professional services firms. In an entertaining and humorous speech, he illustrated the similarities between romance and business relationships. We need to give more than we receive, show concern for the long-term outcome rather than short-term gain, and be true to our word,among other things.
