Bremerton Rotary Club is celebrating the 70th anniversary of its founding this year! Organized Oct. 31, 1941, it is the oldest Rotary Club in Kitsap County, Washington. The charter dinner was scheduled for Dec. 7, 1941, but had to be postponed when Pearl Harbor was attacked. Our club is composed of more than 100 business and professional men and women from a variety of vocations. We are dedicated to community and international service, and we also provide an opportunity for fellowship among the members.

Each winter, for the past 5 years Bremerton Rotarians and others volunteer to read to kindergarteners in the Bremerton School District's six elementary schools once a week for nine weeks. During 2012, we had 22 classrooms, including two in a Spanish immersion program where our volunteers read in Spanish. Participating this year were 12 Rotarians, and one spouse. The rest were PTSA and community volunteers, some of whom have read every one of the 5 years we have been doing this.

Thanks to Bremerton Rotarians, all of the 379 third graders in the Bremerton School District have a scholastic dictionary to call their own. Marking the 9th consecutive year, Rotarians handed out the dictionaries in October 2011 at the six elementary schools in the district, bringing the total number of dictionaries given to date to 3,512. The children are challenged to look up a new word every day!

In August, 2011, our club welcomed our inbound exchange student, Lisa Pfeiffer from Trasdorf, Austria. Lisa will be attending Bremerton High School and staying with three host families for about three months each during the 2011-2012 school year. Lisa plays the recorder, guitar and piano and likes to sing. She played on a fastpitch team that was Austria's national champion. Throughout the year, Rotarians will be including Lisa in various activities.

Each Christmas season, Bremerton Rotarians open their hearts and their wallets to
make sure those less fortunate would experience the Christmas spirit. Through our Christmas Angels program, we provide gifts to several needy local families, plus enough money to buy a holiday meal. Rotarians take gift tags off a Giving Tree and purchase individual gifts.
At our
last meeting prior to Christmas, in an annual tradition, Rotarians received gag gifts and gave
donations to the Salvation Army totalling $6,796. In addition, Rotarians ringing the bells at Salvation Army kettles raised $1613 in one day, including two checks totalling $550!

Led by base-clearing home runs by Flip Herndon and Glen Henrickson (the latter a Grand Salami!), the Bremerton Rotary softball team atoned for two earlier losses years ago, defeating East Bremerton 12-10 in an exciting contest at the Fairgrounds on June 22, 2010. Our team sealed the deal with six runs in the 5th inning, then held on as East Bremerton mounted a stiff rally in the bottom of the 7th. Ryan Rydalch (pictured at left) was the victorious manager.

In 1988, Rotary International committed to the eradication of polio. At that time, 350,000 children contracted the disease annually. Since then, Rotarians worldwide have galvanized governments, provided hundreds of thousands of volunteer hours and raised some $600 million to make eradication a reality.
