PRESIDENT'S NIGHT was the turning of a page, as outgoing President Elizabeth concluded her term as the first female president of the Waterloo Rotary Club. Her year was a productive & inspiring one and Pres Elizabeth recounted the club's recent history as we celebrated our traditional 'Presidents' Night'. She recalled stories of one success after another and how the club embraced growth in many ways. We had visioning exercises which resulted in cohesive, substantial successes. We had offsite meetings, hard work on both International and local projects, membership growth and lots of fun. Congratulations from your fellow Club members, Elizabeth! It was a great year.
As she introduced incoming President Howard Pell, Elizabeth presented him with the President's pin. We congratulate you also, Pres Howard knowing that this page-turning ceremony is not a beginning nor an end, but a continuation of the great history of Waterloo Rotary Club, and of the essence of Rotary International.
For greater detail, please see Elizabeth's year end bulletin in the downloads section (RH side of website) and the photographs of the evening – see Photojournal RH side of the website, also.
This week's meeting was facilitated by Warren Stauch, who conducted a walking tour of Uptown Waterloo historic sites. The members present enjoyed the history, the walking, the beautiful evening, and of course Warren's infamous style of commentary.
It was a very enjoyable and enlightening evening (Thanks again, Warren!) and we will look forward to the next tour July 21st. Don't miss it!

What wonderful news we received this week about the $100 million challenge 'gift' to Our Rotary Foundation from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. What a proud moment for all of us when we read the RI press release, or saw it in the newspaper, or heard it on TV or on the radio, or read it on the Internet. It was wonderful to share the news at our Rotary meetings and listen to the collective expressions of joy from the members.
In the foothills of the Sierra Madre mountains lie towns and cities embedded with rugged character and history. There are also many and varied surrounding neighbourhoods, the population of which is undetermined. The poorest of the poor people who inhabit some of these 'Colonias' endure a harsh climate and an even harsher economy. Their homes are made from scavenged material, and provide little protection from the elements which send cold winds through gaping holes in their makeshift walls. Living with the climatic conditions that this mountainous area present, these gracious Mexicans rely on the charity of churches and service groups to provide some simple necessities.
