Gretchen Jordan, CVA from the Oregon Office of The Long-Term Care Ombudsman showed the club the need for more advocates for the people who are staying/living in care homes scattered through out the state. The job the Office of the Ombudsman has been asked to do is a very important, "protecting the rights of every person that resides in any type of care home or facility."
Volunteers are needed to help statewide with this very important job. For more information go to www.oregon.gov/LTCO or email Gretchen at gretchen.jordan@state.or.us. They are asking for volunteers that have at least 5 hours a week to dedicate to this program.

When you become a Big Brother, Big Sister, or Big Couple, you bring hope
to a child in need. And you do it simply by spending a few hours a week
together doing the things you already like to do. You are a friend and
mentor; not a parent. You are providing a life-changing friendship by
simply spending time together.
As a volunteer, you are not alone. At Big Brothers Big Sisters you are
professionally supported from day one. We will interview you to learn
about your interests, concerns, time and geographic availability. After
the match is made, professional case managers support the match and
assist you with any issues that may arise. In addition, our activities
department will provide fun outing and event opportunities for you and
your Little Brother or Little Sister.

Dr. Christian Zywesk, practitioner/owner of Wilsonville Chiropractic Care Center introduced the club to a fairly new procedure called "Low Level Laser Therapy". Jokingly called the wonder wand in some circles, never-the-less there is tangible science behind this therapy and there are a number of documented cases that have shown significant benefited from the this laser therapy. Low Level Laser(LLL)was has been used successfully for sometime now in veterinary applications. Dr. Zyweck researched and studied this form of therapy for 5 years before becoming convinced of it relevance and genuine value. He has used the LLL therapy on a variety of cases and has been impressed with the decreased recovery time from injuries and to the analgesic effects that the laser has on injured tissue. "I know that all of this sound almost to good to be true" stated Dr. Zyweck, "that is why I researched it for so long and deeply."
Conditions that can be treated with the laser include: pain, arthritis, bruising, TMJ syndrome, many forms of inflammation and immune problems. Strains, sprains, and bone fractures respond very well to the low level laser therapy, this laser also emits a low thermal effect but not enough to cause discomfort or a burn. Patients with severe burns have been reported to recover more quickly due to the cell stimulation and increased blood flow caused by the laser. Dr. Zyweck has more information on this subject on his web site, www.mywilsonvillechiropractor.com.

The US Census is a subject that can get most of us running for the bathroom or for the car with keys in hand. We will do almost anything to NOT deal with answering the pages of invading, mind numbing questions that our government really has no need to know. Pam Whelden, our guest speaker from the Bureau of the Census reports that someone has heard our complaints and changed the census form to be only 7 questions long.
Who will get a census form? Everyone, students, homeless people, and even those who are traveling in their RVs. "A special troop of census workers will go out to help the homeless people to complete their forms, everyone is important in this process" stated Pam. There are about 3700 estimated homeless people in Oregon. Census Forms will be hand delivered to every house and every non house (tent) or other dwelling places. The number of people reported in the census determines the amount of federal money that is allocated to Oregon, as well as determining the number of politicians that we send to Washington.
It costs 11.8 billion dollars to collect an accurate count of people that reside in the United States. Those people who do not return the questionnaire will be questioned personally by one of the many trained census workers, this is the expensive part of the process. It costs an additional 85 million dollars for every 1% of the census forms not returned. Therefore it is really important to fill out the form and return it as soon as possible, if you don't then expect a knock on your door. Think of it this way, you do not have to go to the place of your birth to be counted, you can fill out the form while enjoying a beverage from your recliner, thats progress for you. The task at hand will take just a few minutes, so be a responsible citizen and do your part.
