I have just returned from a
2 month trip to Ethiopia and would like to give you news of the school that we
established in the area of the dam site and how the Rotary contribution was spent.
I am
so happy to report that the school is flourishing.When I left in 2007 there were 150 students from grades
1-3.Today there are now 275
students and it is now up to grade 4 with plans by the local authority to
introduce grades 5 and 6 in the near future.

Bill Auchterlonie and John Boot have both recently transferred to our club from their respective clubs. We had the pleasure of having both President Herman Fontyn and DG Suchak do the honours of welcoming them and presenting them with their membership certificates. DG Pravin Suchak spoke to our club on November 17th about Rotary International commitments, the upcoming congress in Montreal and congratulated us on our various projects.
November is Rotary Foundation Month.It's
often during this month that every Club President and Club Foundation
Chair makes a major pitch to strive to achieve the club's Foundation
goal. Each year our district shows the Rotary world what a district can
do in raising funds for Our Foundation. Last year Rotarians and clubs
in District 7090 contributed in excess of $467,958 to the Rotary
Foundation. In anticipation of each club reaching their stated goal for
this Rotary year we should once again hit "a home run" on June 30th 2010.
Hugh Fraser, an Agricultural Engineer, with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, spoke to the club on November 10th about the wind machines and their operation in the Niagara-on-the-Lake vineyards.
The new Rotary
year for the Niagara-on-the-Lake Club started out with a membership of 48, down 6 from the start of the
previous year. Busy work schedules and moves out of the area were the main
reasons for the decrease. George Howse, a founding member and the oldest member
of the Club, was made an Honorary member. Membership currently stands at 50 (an
increase of 2 so far this year) and we have prospects for 2 more. We expect to
achieve our goal of 3 new members this year.
A policy for payment of luncheon meals for guests was approved by the Board of Directors on July 14, 2009. The policy is to be kept in the cash box for reference.
