Members of the Rotary Club of Kerrville had significant participation in Veterans Day observances at the War Memorial on the grounds of the Kerr Country Courthouse.
Past Club President Bob Waller, a former Marine and veteran of combat in Viet Nam, placed the Rotary Club of Kerrville wreath at the base of the memorial, along with floral tributes from veterans and patriotic organizations, civic groups and other entities.
Secretary-Treasurer George Eychner, a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel, was among the musicians performing the National Anthem and songs of the various military services. Joseph Benham, a veteran of peacetime service in the Army, spoke on the importance of remembering and honoring the families of America's war dead and those who return from wartime service with permanent disabilities. The father of Rotarian Susan Heffington was recognized as one of the Kerr County men killed in World War II.
Retired Navy Commander David Bailey was in charge of the Greystone Academy detachment that provided ushering and other logistic support.
Non-Rotarians who participated in the event included U.S. Rep. Lamar Smith, Kerr County Judge Pat Tinley, Kerrville Mayor Todd Bock and Vietnam Veterans of America officer Alan Hill.
And one of our newest Rotarians, Gerald Irion, took part in both the War Memorial observance and the Veterans Day parade at the Veterans Hospital on the previous Saturday, as President of the Sons of the American Revolution's Hill Country Chapter.

The recent cool weather has triggered beautiful burnt orange color changes in the Cypress trees. I took this photo on the Guadalupe above Kerrville last Thursday.

Carter Blackburn related his experiences as a play-by-play sports announcer. Carter formerly was with CBS, but is now with ESPN. In the photo above, he is showing some of the materials that he studies in preparation for a game. He also interviews college sports information directors and coaches as a part of this preparation. The key is being able to flow this information smoothly to the listener throughout a game.
Carter started his sportscaster career as a student at Tivy High School, while covering baseball games for KERV.

Third graders at Tally Elementary School show off their new dictionaries donated by our club. Helping out at Tally were Brian Bondy, Doug Whinnery, David Martin, Guy Overby and Sue Whinnery, shown in the rear. In all, the club donated more than 500 dictionaries to 3rd graders in KISD (Tally, Nimitz, Tom Daniels and Starkey Elementary Schools), Center Point ISD and Hunt ISD, and to all the elementary grade students at the Hill Country Youth Ranch in Ingram.
Thanks to the Rotarians who helped deliver the books and make this project a HUGE success: Dick Fitch, Lois Schlieter, George Eychner, Sue Tiemann, John Flowers, Brian Bondy, David Martin, Guy Overby, Bob Waller, Doug Whinnery and Sue Whinnery. Next year, the Republican Women's Club will donate dictionaries; it will be our turn again in 2011.
