Nearly 40 people crammed into Rosie Mann's family room to cheer on the New Orlean Saints. One lone hold-out was President Elect Fred Collignon, a longtime Colts fan. As the picture shows, Moe Orenstein more than made up for Fred's lack of support for the winning team. Thanks Rosie for a GREAT PARTY! Go NINERS.... some day?

Pamela Doolan reminds us that Friday, March 5th, 2010 will mark our 17th annual Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) Day celebration in the Berkeley elementary and preschools. At 9:30 a.m., volunteers will sit down in classrooms across the school district to read to students for twenty minutes. Drop Everything and Read Day is a wonderful way to connect with Berkeley's schools and share with our preschool and elementary students your life-long love of reading. Berkeley Rotarians are invited to volunteer again this year.

Past President Rosie Mann is swindeled out of $100.00 (for a good cause) by Past President Ed Church. The saga of the billfold from China continues. Who will be next? Look at the terror on the face of the visitor (right).

The presentation on Lake Baikal in Siberia by Melissa Prager was well received by our Berkeley Rotarians. On February 25 at 6:30 a more thorough presentation including Russian visitors will be made at the David Brower Center in downtown Berkeley. For more information, go to
http://eii.org/cse/email.php
Lake Baikal in southern Russia is the world's deepest lake. It is 5314 feet deep (1637 meters) and it's bottom is at 4215 feet (1285 meters) below sea level. This large lake is located in an active continental rift zone which is estimated to be widening at a rate of about 1 inch (2.5 centimeters) per year.

The Rotary Foundation is a registered charity that supports the efforts of Rotary International to achieve world understanding and peace through international humanitarian, educational, and cultural exchange programs . It is supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and friends of the Foundation who share its vision of a better world.
Programs the Rotary Foundation supports include Polio Plus – a program designed to eradicate Polio from the world. It supports Humanitarians programs, including grants to fund club and district service projects – and matching grants for international projects. The Foundation also supports educational programs – like ambassadorial scholarships, Group Study Exchange, Rotary Grants for University Teachers, and Rotary World Peace Scholarships.
The Paul Harris Fellowship is named for Paul Harris, who founded Rotary over 100 years ago. The Fellowship was established in his honor in 1957 to express appreciation and recognition for a contribution of US $1000 to the Rotary Foundation. A Paul Harris Fellow is an individual who contributes $1,000 US or in whose name that amount is contributed. Every Paul Harris Fellow receives a pin, medallion and a certificate when he or she becomes a Fellow. This identifies the Paul Harris Fellow as an advocate of the Foundation's goals of world peace and international understanding. A multiple Paul Harris Fellow is a Paul Harris Fellow who has contributed, or in who name is contributed, additional US $1000 gifts to the Foundation. While it is an honor to receive a Paul Harris Fellow, it's not about the recognition; it's about what we can do in the World as Rotarians.
