Education and Health care Supplies

Bound for Ak'Tenamit

With the invaluable help and exceptional packing expertise of Breda Moving and Storage, a team of 17 Rotarians successfully packed the forty foot container bound for Guatemala.  This project started more than a year ago when a team of Rotarians from the Schaumburg Hoffman Estates club saw the disrepair of the dental boat at Ak'Tenamit and started collecting the wish list items and from that moment down to the last minute we were receiving much needed and generous donations for the container.

The donations will allow for a complete repair of the boat's equipment.  Like-new dental chairs, overhead lights and a dry heat sterilizer, will be put in place to improve the patient's care.  No longer will the boat be restricted to the local area as the boat will be under motor again with new twin 75 HP outboard motors from Shogren Performance Marine, Mercury Motors and Suburban Surgical Supply.  A new generator and compressor will ensure power is supplied for lighting and dental equipment and allow for a sleeping space for dentists who find themselves working the remote tributaries of the river.  Since the boat has been under a "tow only" situation thousands of people have been unable to access any dental care at all.  Not only will this come to an end but the boat is well supplied with everything from new tools to toothbrushes and paste collected by members.
