WASHINGTON CASH, AN INSPIRING STORY
Editor: Daniel Dow

Click to view image in actual size Our speaker on May 14th was Cheryl Sesnon, Executive Director of Washington CASH. CASH is an acronym for "Community Alliance for Self Help." It does involve money.

Washington CASH provides micro loans, business training (marketing, planning, operations and accounting) and access to other capital for those people starting out with their own businesses. It focuses chiefly on minorities and those traditionally excluded from mainstream credit resources.

Cheryl showed a video, including the experience of two of their successful clients.  "Turn a dream into a success" is a theme, as are many other motivational phrases.

Participants in the program meet frequently, and engage in a great deal of peer support.  Indeed, the group participates in decisions about lending, leading to a kind of "social collateral," in which the group wins if the individual client wins, and vice versa.

Having trained clients and provided capital, the organization stays with their clients for years.  The success ratio is very high.  73% of their clients are still in the program at 18 months, and there is typically a 120% increase in household income for enrollees.

This organization is run like a business, trains people for business, and expects business success.  Cheryl comes across as an outstanding motivator as well as manager.

Washington Cash runs a store at 314 First St. S. in Seattle.  A lot of good information about the organization can be found at http://washingtoncash.org/
