Needham Rotary Club Bulletin

July 7, 2009

New President Ryan Damaso Presiding

Opening: Pledge of Allegiance- President Ryan, 'God Bless America'-Ron Sockol, and Lois Sockol ably led us in Prayer.

Guests:  Dixie, Greg and John Savino and their guest Anna; Joy Spencer, Scottsdale AZ Rotarian; Thomas Gilet, a French college student and RYLA scholar. Thomas is looking for an opportunity to 'shadow' someone at work for his college studies. If you want to meet a nice student from France, please call him at 617-678-0393 or gilet05@orange.fe .

Announcements: Greg Cronin organized the Needham Rotary Float for the Fourth of July parade. Our club received the 'Spirit of America' award trophy for the most spirited float and Greg presented it to Ryan. Congratulations to all who participated! See the photo journal on the Home Page for pictures.

-Deb Donovan, who is preparing speakers for August, has offered to do the month of September as well. If you know of a good potential speaker, give her a call or e-mail.

-John Hirliman mentioned that there were 500 runners at the YMCA run the morning of the 4th of July. This is a new attendance record ! Thanks to Deb Donovan and Wingate for supplying the bottled waters for the event!

-The club is going to watch the Brockton Rox play baseball on August 4th at a 6:05pm game. Note: this will be in lieu of our normal Tuesday lunch. Details to follow.

-Next week the 2009-10 District Governor, Carol Toomey, will be visiting our club. I suspect that means we should be on our best behavior. Please practice the 'Welcome' song before then!

-Karen reported that the Bore Hole Project for Kenya is once again up for signatures in Kenya. So we are only 4 signatures away from getting this project application completed. Hopefully there will be some matching grant money available when the form gets returned.

Public Relations: Lois Sokol had a fantastic video recorded at the meeting where the scholarship recipients received their checks. Great job, Lois! Take a look! It is posted on the Needham Channel website

Habitat for Humanity : Dan Tibma has volunteered  to receive training from Habitat for Humanity; people will be asked to participate in helping to build a residence in Needham. The date will be on a Sunday in late December or January 2010.

Humor: Can't be repeated, not because of the words, but because the scribe can't remember it! This was John Savino's joke, as he carries on for his dad, Tom.

50/50: Chris Teachout had the successful ticket (beginners luck?), but came up short on pulling the correct card. There is now $476 in the pot with the number of cards shrinking!!

Happy Dollars: Bill Paulson is happy for having passed the baton to Ryan; A number of folks were happy for the success with the float; Greg Cronin was happy to see the Rotary ad banner on the back of the MBTA buses.

Guest Speaker: None.
