June 6th, 2012: Club Night
|
Members present at the weekly meeting of the Scituate Rotary Club were Dietrich Bilger, Lambert Brandes, Lois Brandes, Jeannie Durkee, James Gilmore, Walter Heller, Michael Johnson, Suzanne Kavanagh, Joe Kelley, Bart Nuboer, Joan Powers, Judy Price, Robert Price, Robert Schipul, Sandra Schipul, Janet Schmitz, Lucille Sorrentino, Jack Stebe, Ben Summers, Lisa Tompson, Howard Tufts, Bernie Westerveld and esteemed honorary member, Connie Mitchell.
Our guests were Mark Alexander, Katie Baxter, Joe Carty, Frances Huang and Qian Tao, (guests of Dietrich Bilger), and Atahan Yilmaz.
The weekly meeting of The Scituate Rotary Club was convened at 6:30 at The Scituate Country Club with President, Jamie Gilmore presiding.
Joe Kelley led The Pledge to The American Flag.
Ben Summers offered the Invocation.
Janet Schmitz led the speaking of The Four Way Test.
Ben Summers presented Words of Wisdom.
Sergeant at Arms, Walter Heller, collected Happy Sad Bucks.
After dinner, Walter Heller held the winning ticket for The Queen of Hearts, but alas, he did not draw the queen.
Dietrich reminded everyone to sign up for Joe Clancy's Governor Installation on Friday, June 22nd.
Katie Baxter from The Scituate Library was in attendance and reported that the library has just been awarded a five million dollar grant. There are great plans for the library as a community center and a sophisticated center of online collections. Congratulations to Katie and all those who have invested themselves in this project.
Jamie praised Janet Schmitz for her stellar work on the Phone Book. He urged all members to get on board and participate in our goal of 275-300 new ads by the end of June.
Jack Stebe reported that he had attended a meeting for the Indian Summer Exchange Program, and that he had received a thank you letter from the family of the child who had received a Scituate Rotary Contribution toward the installation of an elevator in their home.
Our guest, Mark Alexander, is a Rotarian from Florida. He presented us with a Rotary Flag from his club. Thank you, Mark. We will be reciprocating in a short time.
Jeannie Durkee requested that any outstanding bills be paid in full by the meeting on June 20th in order to present to our incoming treasurer, Bernie Westerveld, a balance of 0 payments due. Our thanks to Jeannie, who, while becoming a new bride this year, has done a FANTASTIC job as our club treasurer!
Janet Schmitz, in A Foundation Moment, urged everyone to contribute $100.00 before the closing of this year on June 30th. She stressed that no gift is too large or too small, and any gift given will be gratefully received.
Suzanne Kavanagh gave a GIE update. She reported that we have raised $6,175.00 to date. All members are asked to consider whether or not they can host a GIE evening in the coming months. Lisa Tompson will host a GIE evening at The Pool Club at James Landing on July 18th. Walter Heller will host a GIE evening at his home on August 1st. Thank you. Lisa and Walter, for your efforts in this endeavor.
Robert Schipul reported that Dan and Patty Schmelzer will be in the area at the end of October. Bob and Candace will work cooperatively on getting them into the eleventh grade at SHS.
Atahan Yilmaz, Rotary Youth Exchange Student from Istanbul, Turkey, attending Norwell High School and living with a family in Norwell, was with us in our meeting. Joe Carty, a Tri-Town Rotarian, one of Atahan's sponsors, accompanied him.
Janice Brown will host Scholarship Night at her home on Wednesday, June 13th. JANICE, YOU'RE THE BEST!!! Thank you for your outstanding generosity and hospitality.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:00 pm.
