July 11, 2012, GIE Pool Party at James Landing
|
Members attending this Scituate Rotary Event were Dietrich Bilger, Lambert Brandes, Lois Brandes, Candace Cramer, Michael Johnson, Suzanne Kavanagh, Joe Kelley, Loic Meston, John Miller, Connie Mitchell, Bart Nuboer, Joan Powers, Robert Schipul, Sandra Schipul, Janet Schmitz, Lucille Sorrentino, Lisa Tompson, and Bernie Westerveld.
Suzanne Kavanagh and Lisa Tompson, our gracious hostesses, welcomed us as we arrived in the evening for our weekly Scituate Rotary Meeting. This was our monthly Governor Installation Event, and it promised to hold an evening of accomplishment, fun, and fellowship.
Joe Kelley led The Pledge to The American Flag.
Robert Schipul offered the Invocation.
With a delectable buffet table laid out in the background, President, Joe Kelley, wearing the colorful Scituate Rotary Presidential Stole, called all members to order beside the pool. In that glorious setting, overlooking the rivers and green marsh grasses, all was right with the world, and members easily agreed to the proposed budgeted projects, with a few modifications.
The Scituate Rotary Board Members had hammered out a proposed budget for local community and international projects for the new year, 2012-2013, in a special board meeting the previous Saturday morning. Their work was inclusive and thorough, and the members were impressed with their diligence. The budget stands as proposed with these exceptions: Candace spoke on behalf of Local Community Project # 5, and reminded us that the name had been changed to Global Studies. She proposed the funding be in the amount of $2,500 dollars, and it was unanimously accepted by the membership. Lisa spoke on behalf of Local Community Project #6, and reminded us the $2,000 dollar amount is for one student, and we give two such scholarships. This amount was unanimously ammended to $4,000 dollars. It was also decided to provide $125 dollars to INTERACT at Scituate High School.
Discussion ensued concerning whether to send scholarship money directly to students, or to the college they are attending. It was agreed to give the scholarship directly to the students, as many colleges now have policies that limit the amount a student may receive.
Joe spoke on behalf of The Michael J. Kelley Fund and the kind of effort we can be involved in to help the Michael J. Kelley School that's been established in Afghanisan.
We will start The Shelter Box effort during Heritage Days.
The board members had also projected a grand total expected from our fund raising projects to be held during this new year. To make all of these projects successful, ALL MEMBERS are needed to participate to the utmost of their ability.
The first of these projects will be The Scituate Rotary Heritage Days Pancake Breakfast. YOU ARE NEEDED TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!!
Bernie will represent our Club for The Scituate Task Force called Families, Adolescents, and Communities Together against Substances (FACTS). This program is supported by the DA's Office. Facts is planning to apply for a Federal Grant. In order to be eligible to do this, they must have a representative from many local government and community groups. Scituate Rotary needs to be on board and Bernie will be our liaison. Thank you, Bernie for your willingness to be involved in this worthy effort.
Joe praised Dietrich Bilger for his willingness to step into the position of District Governor next year, and spoke of our pride that Dietrich is a member of Scituate Rotary. He praised Scituate Rotary Members for their commitment and continuing efforts to fund this event. He challenged all members to get on board and make Dietrich's Installation Party an event to remember.
Bernie brought up dat the margin between the cost of the meals at Scituate Country Club and the price we charge our members now is $0.87 - this margin pays for the meal we give to our speaker. Bernie proposed to raise the price of the meal to $17.00. This proposal was voted on by the membership and accepted.
The meeting was adjourned, members gathered at the buffet table, enjoyed Sophie's, Pauline's, and Chris' youthful energy in the pool, then fellowshipped poolside under shades of evening, until mosquitos forced us to retire to our individual homes.
Kudos to Lisa, Suzanne, and all the wonderful people who shared delicious dishes with us.
Ciao,
Lois |
