"Welcome to the FASTEST Half Hour in Lakewood!"

            This was the opening quote by our President Greg II after having just 2 meetings under his belt!  Perhaps it was a direct result from last week's performance:  either a 40+minute meeting then short program or just a double scheduled program……… but we were movin' FAST & Low Level!  Fasten your safety belts, Sound the Horn, this year is going to be FUN(by the order of our Dist Gov Alex).

 Assisting in today's Land Speed Record were:
Dan Livingston - Invocation     Col Charles Heberle, USARet - Pledge of Allegiance
Bill Young - Sgt at Arms James Guerrero - Paul Harris Desk  Dave Covey - Bulletin
 Visiting Rotarians:
Gary Wilson, Paul Webb & Gen Bill Harrison: Clover Park Rotary
Ross Hjelseth, Tacoma 8 Rotary   Dave Barkley, Sumner Rotary
 Guests of Rotarians:
Leon Titus introduced Jon Montgomery from Albers & Co. a guest of James Guerrero.
Lt Dave Guttu intro-ed Sgt Mark Eakes (Lakewood Police Dept) who's riding in his 1st Courage Classic; Bank America representative Donya Martin, guest of our Pres, was introduced by Carl Fynboe.
Pres Greg introduced our Exchange Student at her last Lakewood Rotary meeting, Satu Sihvo.

Sunshine Report:  Jan Luze shared with us last week that Skip Stephan went into Madigan exploratory abdominal surgery.   He really appreciated the note and flowers Jan sent on our behalf. No details on the operation, but through the years it has been wonderful how the Sunshine Committee has been so thoughtful to members & their families going through tough times.  A little card, some encouragement and flowers on behalf of all of us can mean a lot during tough times.   Thank you, Jan, and thank you, Joanne Crane, for providing a valuable service to our Club through the years.

Lakewood Country & Golf Club DRESS CODE:   Pres Greg II called on a Past President of the Country Club, our own - Dave Betz, someone who was involved in setting the standards.  We could have done with a little less modeling, but Bermuda shorts are OK, shirts with collars and anything that you can wear on THIS golf course (not short shorts).  Pres Greg II volunteered, "Nice legs are OK in Bermuda shorts like Dave's, but not chicken legs!"  Just who is he referring to?

Paul Harris Presentation:  Mick Johnson invited our token Russian, Charles Heberle III, to come forward to receive his 3rd award..  Charles thanked everyone and apologized that he had to leave early to be with his daughter in the hospital.  He has perfect attendance despite traveling around the world and gave $100 to his next Paul Harris and $20 to us because today is his 20th anniversary in Lakewood Rotary.  A few parting Russian words to our Finnish exchange student and he was GONE!

Lakewood Rotary HOMEBREW Festival Aug 29:  Pres-Elect Mick Johnson was working pretty quick himself as Chair of the HOMEBREW Festival.  Right before our eyes, he organized the different committee chairmanships ..the ol' military saying of  "don't volunteer for anything" didn't seem to apply to Lakewood Rotary.  Let's see ...it all happened so fast, but Mick already had Ron Adkins Chairing Marketing  with a band of brothers/sisters to speak at other Rotarys;
Mick & the entire Club Set Up & Tear Down.(20 volunteers needed)
Brandon Horn & Friends:  Home Brewers
Rick Selden - Food Concessions (needs 40 volunteers selling);
Tony Robinson, Mr MC & Music Man - Entertainment;
Sanitation?  Who else but Ted Wier, Duncan Cook, Mark Blanchard & the Boy Scouts;
Jon Calder volunteered to head the Procurement Committee;
If Ward Fletcher & Richard Simmons read this, thanks, Mick volunteered you for Equipment;  Likewise Michael Lewis for the Insurance Committee;
You'd think serving 2+ years in the Army that Dave Betz would know better, but there he was with his hand in the air for Supplies;
Kids Committee has the Reames, the Mazoffs & the Partners;
Mr. Lakewood Police Dept, Dave Guttu - Security & Check-in;
Golf: Long Drive, Chipping & Putting Contest - Bill Potter
Classic Car Rally - Mick asked Greg Rediske to persuade PPJohn Lowney to Chair that one;
Retail Shop - Mick was caught by surprise when wife Mary volunteered along with Mary Horn;
Banking - Jay Mayer ..he does such a great job at the Sportsman's Dinner!
All committee chairs were asked to commit to weekly meetings at Smith Western/Tuesdays at 6PM

Board of Director Installation (continued)  Bill Potter has just completed his first year on the Board but, officially, an installation for all officers is done each year.  2 weeks ago we installed Board Member Andrew Neiditz and Pres Elect Mick Johnson.  In keeping with the Fast Forward theme, Past Asst Gov Dave Covey skimmed through pages of ceremonial gibberish in record time.  Thank you, Bill, for serving.  Now, all that's needed is for Board Member Paul Wulfestieg to come home from his latest 737 delivery somewhere in the world ....to complete the longest running installation in Lakewood Rotary history!

Floating Fellowship Meeting:  Admiral Morris Northcutt announced the fleet was leaving the Tacoma Yacht Club Aug 13th.  Formerly the Floating Board Meeting, Greg II noted very little actual Board business was ever accomplished, so let's just have FUN and not worry about it!  There will be a signup sheet next week.  $12 goes for as much grog and hardtack as you could ever imagine!

Late Breaking News Flash:  Sportsman's Dinner - March 20, 2010!

Courage Classic:  Dave Guttu, Rest Stop Chair said that we have more than enough volunteers (13), even without Tacoma South's help.   We will win Best Mid-Morning Rest Stop again if we can get the hula boys dancing, embarrassing photos taken and massage studio up and running!  Did he forget the World Famous Richard Simmons' root beer floats?
  He felt so good about his responsibilities that he switched to fund raising for one of his Patrol Sgts, Mark Eakes and passed the hat.  Now remember, our own Club riders are still groveling for money and Lt Dave brings in another "mouth to feed"!   Well, guess what - it worked.  Sgt Eakes got $281 for the ride and then gave $50 to Jim Churchill (Covey's Oregon friend).   Remember when we made the appeal to help Cindy get started, that must have worked too because her fund raising has blown right past all of us.  Bud Montgomery mentioned if you tire of all the paperwork to support all 6 Lakewood Rotary Riders, write one check and we'll make sure that it gets divided up any way you want!  HELP is still needed to make our goals ....if you are not a volunteer, here's an easy way to help ...write a check!

NOTE:  You may think the mountain passes are the hardest part of the Courage Classic, but it is far harder to be asking for money.  Please volunteer to help with any amount if you've not done it already!

FINES:  Pres Horn had already coordinated a fine with PP Scott Buser for $70 for something.  In the fast exchange back & forth, using a combination of cryptic statements and attempted inside jokes, something happened!
      Tony Robinson had a great multi-page article in the Business Examiner.  It was an honor to have all this happen until the mail came.  It seems that every financial advisor in a 3 county area reads the Business Examiner and Tony got 4 congratulatory notes with all kinds of invitations to help with his investment learning curve!  $40 for the Club!
      Dan Livingston's wife bravely completed the 190+ miles on the Seattle to Portland Bike Ride and he volunteered $20 to help Sgt Eakes in the Courage Classic.

Satu Sihvo's Goodbye:  Pres Greg II earlier had asked Satu to tell everyone what time she got up this morning to come to Rotary - 11:30AM - which was a new record, surpassing last week's 11AM!  Satu is very comfortable speaking to us and was unfazed by Greg's zinger ....how she slaved away this morning on her speech.  Satu said that her year has been awesome and that she was lucky being at Lakewood Rotary.  Other exchange students didn't have as great an experience ...."there was nothing wrong with you!"
         When she returns to Finland she'll have 2 ½ weeks of vacation, then school starts.  She'll be a grade behind and described how tough the Intl Baccalaureate (IB) program is there (sound familiar?)  This year her English has greatly improved, despite starting off in NYC and not understanding a thing they said.  "Neither do we!" was volunteered from a few members.   Then her classmates at Lakes HS taught American English to her, not necessarily proper English.  She also has learned Japanese and is fascinated by languages.  She hopes to have a career of some sort associated with languages ....she said "I can talk for hours!"
 You couldn't help but notice both Satu and Greg II checking their watches.  She related that her exchange student advisor, Greg Rediske (Greg I) had given her just so many minutes (probably because of that hour comment).  She thanked her host families:  the Korsmos "forever - 6 months", the Whalens and now the Horns.  Her experience was as if all Americans were "rich, white & on the lake" as she went from one waterfront home to another.
 Thursday eve she cooked a Finnish dinner at the Whalen's house that Greg Rediske "paid a lot of money for" with the Mazoffs, Rediskes & HornsJason Whalen had to remind her to put in a plug for his candidacy for Lakewood City Council ....so that he wouldn't have to pay a fine.
 It's been a fun year for us and for Satu.  She's been to California twice and played in the Lakes Band.  Her grades were 3-A's, 2-C's and a B+: almost 3.0. Her hair coloring was almost blond now after her disastrous "going green" attempt that President Greg II loves to kid her about.  We'll miss you, Satu.

Program:  UPDATE International Baccalaureate Program @ Harrison Prep

 Superintendent of Clover Park School District, our own Debbie LeBeau, gave the background on how after years of conversations, research, training and more conversations with Lakewood Rotary, School Board members, 3 different superintendents + school staff .. the IB Program has begun.  In September of last year, Lakewood Rotary presented a check for $28,000 and committed to similar contributions for the next 4 years.  To make the presentation she introduced:
Gary Wilson, Asst Supt of secondary schools, 27 year CPSD employee who has been a principal at 6 schools, PLU undergraduate and graduate degrees and a Clover Park Rotarian.
Lisa Boyd, Principal of Harrison Prep, is the wife of a retired Army NCO and has traveled and taught all over the country.  She has a degree from Fayatteville State Univ and a masters from Central Washington, most recently she was the Greenwood Elementary principal on Ft Lewis.

 Investigate the IB Diploma Program

Questions then began by the most informed audience on the IB Program in Lakewood, our membership.  Both Gary & Lisa have already seen the importance of keeping the staff in-place and the desirability by other school districts to recruit trained IB staff.  It is critical that there's commitment from all the players:  kids, staff & families.  Because of all that they are doing at Harrison Prep, families, including military families moving here, are seeking out Harrison Prep.
 Initially there was some staff resistance to the idea of IB, naturally so after being skilled enough educators that they were chosen for Harrison Prep.  But after discussions, research and attending IB training, the staff have seen the value and are taking on the commitment.  Administrators are pleased at the retention of this staff.  Limitations?  If the kids want to be part of extracurricular activities not offered at Harrison, they can begin school at 7am, then go to CP or Lakes in the afternoon.
 Our IP Committee members were the primary questioners, naturally so after weekly meeting over a 3 year period of time.  Chariman Mike McGowan and his team can take pride in the IB's growth, even though they will continue to ask tough questions.  Thank yous go to committee members:  Bob Zawilski, Clint Johnson, Ted Weir, Bob Peterson, Greg Horn, Eric Herbel, Carl Fynboe, Ron Adkins and Dave Sclair.

FASTEST Half Hour in Lakewood?   One of Satu's quote applies here too, "It seemed like forever!"   It took more than an hour ....and I have no idea about the drawing other than the red chip is still there!
