Visiting Rotarians: Yes, we had visiting Rotarians today, one, from San Jose, but his name flew right by me. Terry Robbling, a Rotarian from the San Diego area, was not only introduced by his brother-in-law, Clint Johnson, but Major General Robbling, soon to be Lt. General Robbling, was given the microphone to tells us a bit about his new assignment in Okinawa. Bob Ecklund of Tacoma #8 joined us also, and we trust he did pick up a make-up card after his presentation (see below). Bob was our program for the day.
Visitors. Judy Hosea introduced Carrie Hungerford who is looking over Lakewood Rotary. She is a past member of the Emerald City Club. She and her husband own the franchise for the area Round Table Pizza restaurants and they live in Lakewood. Gosh, Carrie, I hope we were well behaved.
Sunshine. Jan Luze reported that Ann Tremaine is in hospital. No further details are known at this point.
President Greg exercised his right to add an additional report. Greg came to know and appreciate Jose Crisostomo a few years ago when he performed hugely in the construction of the playground at Fort Steilacoom. Sadly, Jose was killed recently by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan.
Exchange student news. Anatole Verhaeghe is off this weekend for the Exchange Student Orientation, but he will soon return to the Blanchard home. Pres Greg introduced Anatole to American baseball earlier this week by escorting him to a Rainiers game. If you have ideas about possibly entertaining Anatole, give Mark a call and set something up.
Homebrew Festival. P-E Mick Johnson came forward to make a report of the first Lakewood Rotary Homebrew Festival. As the first in a series, there were several learnings, such as the notion of staggering the work shifts. Altogether it appears some 263 people attended, and Dave Reames appears to be the winner of the sales competition, raising $450 in the process. A couple of others appear not far behind Dave. Obviously the accounting is very much still in process as some of you who are still selling tickets. Be that as it may, at this point we've turned a profit on the order of $1,250 to $1,500, but that could go up. Mick has already declared his intent to continue the program.
Announcements. Kim Prentice supplemented her announcement with flyers regarding the 2009 All-City Tailgate event, beginning at 3:30 at Harry E. Lang Stadium. The event is free, and you are invited to sample $1 hot dogs or bring your own picnic. The Rainiers' mascot, Rhubarb, will be on the scene. The tailgate party winds down at 6:30, but you are encouraged to consider staying on the Lakes/Peninsula HS football game which begins at 7:00.
Judy Hosea announced that she and Dave Guttu are teaming up to fill a table at the Lakewood Lions event is a few weeks. Tickets are $40. See Dave or Judy to join the fun. [FYI, several Lions participated in our Homebrew Festival.]
President Greg noted that District 5020 is holding two World Community Service Seminars. The first will be Saturday, Sept 19th in Chehalis, with a rerun in Poulsbo on Sept 26th. Check will Greg for further information and/or go to the D5020 website.
Our "table tent" noted that the annual Reeder Roadster Romp will occur Sept 12th - 15th, with Walla Walla the destination.
Blue badges. Pres Greg proudly awarded blue badges to Debbie LeBeau and Kismet Kechejian. $5 each was extracted, and Greg indicated there are at least two more blue badges to be presented.
Fines and such.
Ben Sclair missed last week's Brewfest. He was on the Oregon Coast celebrating a wedding anniversary. Even though anniversaries will be recognized later this month, without shame Greg separated Ben from $50.
Mike Turner offered up $75, and this provoked a discussion as to whether or not the "$75" offering should be named "the Turner." There was no real consensus on this idea, so Mike proceeded to tell us about the fire halls doing an open-house remembrance next Friday (September 11th) for "9/11." At some point Mike will also take off for a substantial bike ride. Was that in Colorado, Mike?
Paul Wulfestieg revisited Lakewood Rotary after what seems a very long absence. After making several statements about Brenda Davis and her family, he admitted that he'd slipped away for a 41st wedding anniversary in Victoria which he somehow worked into various trips across the Pacific to deliver some airplanes. As he flashed $100 for all of this he further noted that his daughter was married in June. And what do you do in your spare time, Paul?
Dave Betz also had several things to bring up: winning $400 in a club golf tournament, fished in Birnie, and packing his bags for a trip to North Dakota where he will hunt pheasants and droll over the vintage car collection of his wife's relative. Another $100 into the pot.
PDG Gordie Quick also went fishing, he to Alaska. He had hoped to bring home enough to get him through the winter. Didn't do all that well, but he suspects the catch will last into December. Despite his very tight budget, Gordie ponied up $25, a figure that nearly left Pres Greg speechless.
Today's program featured Bob Ecklund of Tacoma #8 and President/CEO of the YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties. Bob rattled off a huge amount of facts and figures, all very impressive. Quick examples: the Y has 1440 staff members, which is up from about 600 just a few years ago. The area Ys serve some 100,000 people and is the 38th largest Y in the US. Bob proudly celebrated recent accomplishments such as the Y in Gig Harbor and noted that plans are afoot for a new Y in Silverdale. Camp Seymour is to get a new facility very soon. One program Bob doted on is called Friends & Servants which has worked with 1,000 youth at risk over the last 15 years.
Just before the dismissal bell at 1:30 John Warner claimed a $5 prize in the weekly drawing.
