SO, THIS IS ROTARY?
LIVE, from the Tacoma Country & Golf Club, it's Name That
Tune! No, Name The Singer …… No, it's Friday noon, we are at the
Tacoma Country & Golf Club - it must be another chapter in the
eventual impeachment trial of President Greg Horn! Was that a new suit
he was wearing? Not surprising when you found out he had invited his
wife of 33 years, Mary, to be his guest.
12:30pm, King Greg II grabbed the mic, brought us to order and
commented on how much he enjoyed playing before "another packed house".
Dave Coleman gave the invocation and mentioned special thanks for
all those Rotarians that work with the youth of our community: Dan
Livingston of Youth for Christ proudly has announced the new opening of
the $1.6 mil Tillicum Youth and Family Center, the ongoing work by
David Pritchard with Young Life and Judy Hosea with the Boys & Girls
Club. Pres-Elect Mick Johnson led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Helping today to make the meeting happen: Duncan Cook (setup), Bill
Young (Sgt at Arms), Mike McGowan (Paul Harris desk) and Dave Covey
(Bulletin).

Visiting Rotarians:
Past Pres of Sumner Rotary and Oakbrooker, Bert Stibbe, was given a smattering of "boos" Guests of Rotarians: We've already mentioned that Queen Mary was here; Judy Hosea introduced a co-worker, Connie Moravek; James Guerrero's guest was John Montgomery again of the Albers Company; Jud Bordman has been away so much he was volunteered as a guest, but he reminded everyone that he paid his dues; Kirsten Quinn's birthday is tomorrow so her loving husband Joe invited her to our meeting .... as a gift? He also had their youngest son, Eric, a PLU grad and about to take the LSAT test for law school possibilities. SUNSHINE REPORT: Jan Luze reports nothing new on Ann Tremaine. Please no telephone calls or visitors. She's home now and they're still trying to get a handle on her cancer diagnoses that is inoperable. Cards are welcome - all our thoughts are with her. The Ootkin family heritage goes back a long way with Lakewood Rotary. We're pleased to report that Emma Ootkin (daughter of Greg & Gretchen) is back to work. Nothing is ever that simple, but it's good news. We're thinking of her too!
ANNOUNCEMENTS: The ONE: Sat Sep 26th Surfin' Safari @ the Greater Tacoma Convention & Trade Center. The Boys & Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound are not only offering a great time, but also Judy Hosea has a $25 contribution to Lakewood Rotary for any tickets we sell. Great fund raiser for us with no planning committees or messy setup or cleanup. Call Judy (253).502-4618 or e-mail judyh@bg-clubs.com For more info, visit www.bg-clubs.com and click on "events". Food, drinks, entertainment, dancing all rolled into the $100 admission ...talk about a great deal! P-A-R-T-Y!
WSU 30 - SMU 27 UW 16 - USC 13 (Sorry PPJoel, we don't have to say anything, it was just too good of a day for NW college football fans)
HORN TRADING: It doesn't take long with a new administration to figure out where the priorities are! King Greg II wants presents, especially from our travels. Michael McGovern hadn't even gone anywhere, but right before the entire Club, our Prez is shaking him down for trading cards on the great fleet of fire-fighting equipment that Lakewood Fire Dept has. It seems they won a national award and our Prez heard about it! An impasse was declared because Michael had no inventory immediately available (on his person) - be at next meeting to see just what Greg the II will trade for them. John Magnuson, after a conspicuous absence at the Homebrew Festival, came bearing gifts from his first-hand research at the Mother of all Brew Festivals, the HofBrau House in Munchen's pre-Octoberfest. Ole had offered to meet in Italy to talk to King Greg II .....waited for him there, but was stood up! Next best thing? A T-shirt from the HofBrau House.
WORKSHOP Reminder: World Community Service Seminars: Chehalis Sep 19 (if you didn't go to the Husky game) Poulsbo Sep 26
Yankee/Mariner Tickets Auctioned Off: El Presidente held up 4 tickets, great seats above 1st base, to raise a little cash for his budget. Silence! Like, no interest! So finally Dave Betz made a half-hearted attempt to get it going with $30. When he upped his own bid to $40, the crowd turned ugly and demanded he up it again. Finally from the back of the room came a voice, "$50". Silence - after more urging, Betz went up to $51, back and forth all the way up to $55 with Dave explaining how tough the lumber business has been hit. Finally, the voice stood, it was Joe Ghilarducci. Joe said, "Dave, these are my tickets!" The membership went ....Ohhhhhhhh ! (much laughter followed). It seems Joe had guaranteed that he'd buy it back if it didn't go for over $100. A little more confusion followed when King Greg II said sold for $120 ...... to Joe .... to which Joe corrected our leader on the terms of the deal. Note: Later at the end of the meeting, we noticed Dave Betz over brokering another deal that just might have given him title to said tickets, not sure.
EDUCATOR OF THE MONTH:
Ted Cohn (left) Eric Miller Since 2002 Lakewood Rotary has partnered with the Steilacoom and Clover Park School Districts to recognize their outstanding teachers. Now that school has started again Tony Robinson stepped forward to announce this month's outstanding selections: Ted Cohn, an English teacher at Lakes was nominated by his Asst Principal, Matt Oberst. Ted is always trying to reach out to his students "where they are" for their better understanding - no diagramming sentences, Tony. He continually drives home the questions, "What is the learning objective? What are you doing to learn it? How will you know it?" He has also worked with the entire English Department insuring a consistency and progression from 9th grade to their Senior year. Besides his many hours in preparation and work in the classroom, he makes himself available for tutoring. Congratulations and thank you Ted for all that you do for your students. Eric Miller heads up the Physical Education Department at Steilacoom High School and this is his 10th year there. Today he's ushered in an emphasis on healthy lifestyles such as walking fitness, eating right and doing one's best is his motto for each kid he works with. Yes, he's been a great coach too, winning the honor in 2002 as the Washington State 2A Football Coach of the Year. But he's stepped back a little to play an even more important role . being there for his own kids at their sporting events. This Educator of the Month is a nice honor for Eric, but what makes teachers tick are when students come back to say thanks. One of Lakewood Rotary's mentored students this last year, Erika Mueller, has been accepted to Brown. But before she left, on Hero Day at Steilacoom HS, she dressed up like Mr Miller saying that he was her Hero - that's pretty cool!!! Thank you, Eric, for the work you do for our communities and our kids. Note: Eric loves horticulture too and Tony reassures us that this honor had nothing to do with the fresh flowers he puts on the Principal's desk every morning!
BULLETIN POSITION VACANCY: You try to write up this last week's meeting. There were so many things flying around, I quit! President Greg, either slow down the meetings or have less FUN, or you'll lose the whole committee!
BA: King Greg II just blurted out the letters then paused to get a reaction. Yes, it stands for "Birthdays and Anniversaries" and that's when we noted the Ralph Lockhart, Wheel of Fortune. His guest lecturer, was that wild and crazy biking guy, recently retired, Bud Montgomery, who called up the Sept B-day & anni members for a Scavenger Hunt! Jan Luze was asked if she had a Rotary pin, she did....N/C. Mike Block had to spin the wheel, no bank statement.....$20 Bob Zawilski had to spin, no stock quote on him .......$20 Dave Coleman didn't have a simple pen .....only $10 spin Gayle Selden's tape measure was in the car ........$20 Greg Horn's quick thinking when asked for a water ski-a foot N/C (but he just happened to have $33 for 33 years of marriage to Mary and then walked over to plant a kiss on her - talk about a setup!) Walt Richardson did have a biking logo on him ......N/C Rick Selden did not have a carpet sample in his possession $20 ( for the 10 good years of their marriage, Sharon gave .... $10) Stephanie Walsh spun after not having a Lakewold Pass ..$20 Mike McGowan is Mike McGowan! Bud didn't even get a chance to ask him for anything before Mike said, "I'll give $40 if you match me?" (Matching is an old Lakewood Rotary tradition). DONE $80 Somebody Else was next but how could you keep track when you're laughing? Whoever it was, owed $10 (but didn't have it) Ben Sclair found on his iPhone - a newspaper .....N/C
Great FUN, Bud, Lakewood Rotary is $233 richer!
PROGRAM? Who Needs a Program with Members Like US? From the back of the room comes what at first you think is the voice of Bobby Darin and "Mack the Knife", but no, it's our own Joe Quinn. It will be the first ever, NAME THAT SINGER for Lakewood Rotary. Prez Horn had the answers and a stack of one dollar bills (thanks to Joe) for the person who guessed correctly. After wasting a lot of time on the ground rules that any normal Rotarian could never grasp, Joe sang "Strangers in the Night". Tony Robinson should
not
have been allowed to participate because he's a semi-professional singer - but he got whoever it was. When song #2 "Amore" was guessed by someone, Rick Selden asked if Joe should cut the song off at that point. He was ignored by the singing barrister! Then there was an anonymous query for the Drawing. Undaunted Joe broke into "I Got to Be Me" - no one got the Rat Pack, Joe kept the dollar. Do you see how difficult it is to make up any of this stuff? "Shadow of your Smile" (Tony Bennett), "You Were on My Mind" (Willie), "All in the Game" (Tommy Edwards that Dave Coleman got right and had to argue for his winnings - Greg was reading the wrong line). Hey, we're not through yet ....there was audience participation, a request for a change of singers and Joe was asked if this was more FUN than going before the Supreme Court? His reply, it's better than a Club Assembly or DG Visit! (Thanks Joe for toeing the Company Line). We had Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong, Stevie Wonder and Tennessee Ernie Ford too! What a meeting - as a change of pace, we started guessing Musicals: Joe did Oklahoma and My Fair Lady - which were guessed right away. Kind of a tough one when he said we'd have to guess the name of the instrument in the next song. He pulls out a toothbrush (that wasn't it) starts humming the theme song from Dr Zhivago with a staccato motion of the toothbrush. Immediately someone said, "Julie Christie". Close but not quite, it was a balalaika (amazing that Joe's toothbrush could do that). Eric Quinn came forward to help out on the last song ....actually he just took the mic and sang beautifully himself - a musical that no one got. He sang so long, by his own volition, he ran out of words! The ol' apple doesn't fall far from the tree, eh Joe? Thank you everyone, especially the Quinns, FUN entertainment. RAFFLE: Dave Sclair lost again! $5
