Friday – October 30, 2009 All Hallows Eve-Eve
(I know it will all be history when you read this…but this scribe is in the moment!)
One witch told another witch, "I want one of those new computers that
has a spell checker."
The air horn is back….and President Greg with
it! (Were you gone?)
Dan Livingston led the club in a moment of silence in honor of the
fallen soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. We were guided in the
pledge to our flag by Duncan Cook.
Other Rotarians helping out were Ron Irwin on Fall Raffle Tickets, Bill
Young as Sergeant at Arms and the Weekly Raffle, and Mick Johnson at
the Paul Harris table …. thanks, guys!

Don't bother inviting the Invisible Man to your Halloween party. He won't show up. Sometimes he makes excuses, but they are all transparent!
VISITING ROTARIANS
Only one..Dave Snyder (I hope) from Tacoma 8.
GUESTS OF ROTARIANS Ben Sclair introduced TheSubTimes.com Marketing Director, Stephen Neufeld. (Now you have to change your webpage and say you have more than one employee!)
Dave Guttu presented the neighborhood beat cop, Peter Johnson so he could look over some of the more suspicious residents in his coverage area. Hmmmmm.
A vampire joined the Lakewood police force so he could learn the correct way to get a stakeout!
Greg Rediske had two guests with him. One was Barbara Wyatt, wife of Tacoma 8 Rotarian and Lakewood resident, Linn Larson. Barbara and Linn are also the proud parents of our long winded and verbose Lakewood Rotary Exchange Student to Jalgoan, India, Hunter Larson. Also with Barbara was Juhi Pawar, a Rotary Exchange Student to Poulsbo. It is with Juhi's family that Hunter is staying.
SUNSHINE - A report by Jan Luze Larry Faulk is back. Dave Reames is mending slowly. Bud Montgomery is back after shoulder surgery (quit punching him in the arm!), Skip Stephan is back and Judy Hosea's father-in-law passed away.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: Ben Sclair: Lakewood Rotary is now on Facebook. If you would like to join Facebook and/or add Lakewood Rotary to your list of "friends" access the following: Facebook.com/Lakewood Rotary. Ben has just posted some photos from our recent Brewfest event. Ben also mentioned that some friends had noticed that on his facebook page, he is a "friend" of Ed Selden Carpet One. Another friend noticed and asked Ben if that was a good company to go to for flooring? Ben got an "attaboy and ALRIGHT BEN!" from Rick Selden. Ben is waiting for his commission check. (Alright Rick!)
A little voice (Jane Whitney) also mentioned that Sarah Palin is also on Facebook whereas our esteemed President stated that he would "get on her too!" Out of the snickers and mumbles, I did hear him groan "that didn't come out right!"
How do you fix a jack-o-lantern? With a pumpkin patch!
Dave Betz stepped in front of the club and promoted our Fall Raffle. With a $5,000 grand prize t should be an easy sell for members at $5 per ticket. Bill Young has single handedly sold over $1,500 worth of the little things! Dave then single-handedly swiped Greg Rediske's joke about begging God for a winning raffle ticket. He did localize his story, but geesch Dave when we go to all this trouble, you could at least read the bulletin occasionally. (Dave has actually been in North Dakota which as yet to get the internet!) Okay, Dave..all is forgiven.
Sell those raffle tickets - or purchase them yourself! It's for our good causes!
Juhi Pawar came forward to talk a little about meeting Hunter Larson when he arrived in India. She was there for about a month getting to know him before she left for America. She found Hunter to be very adventurous where spicy Indian cuisine is concerned. Although she warned him about chilis, he managed to eat one when she turned away. Juhi was scolded by her mother "not concentrating" on Hunter. Juhi was able to teach Hunter about other things like cows/buffalo in the road and why women have red dots on their foreheads (sign of being married). Hunter actually saw a cow with a red mark and laughingly said to Juhi that the cow must be married. Juhi got a kick out of Hunter who loves the food and the country of India and was having a great experience.
Juhi is also having a great experience attending North Kitsap HS and spending time with many Pouslbo Rotarians.
NOTE TO ROTARIANS: The exchange committee is going to collect small donations (50 cents - $1) each week to create a fund for our members to take Anatole out movies, games, events. This way, Anatole will have more adventures and it won't be a hardship on any of our members. Remember to include Anatole in anything you are doing!
NEW MEMBER INDUCTED: One of President Greg's favorite things is to induct new members. Today, he had the opportunity to invite Dr. Jim Rooks forward with his proposed member, Colonel Ed Shannon. Ed was raised in Rhode Island and was a soldier for 28 years which included a couple of tours at Ft. Lewis. Thinking that 55 degrees and drizzle make a "super day", this became the area he wanted to retire. Ed received his BA and MBA at UPS. He has been retired now for 17 years, dividing his time between fishing and golf. He now wants to add Rotary to the list.
Lorna Gifford, our last new member, passed the sacred "Puffin" to Ed. President Greg also piled on the "Pin Trilogy" and directory. Remember t is up to all members to seek out new members, introduce yourselves and sign the directory. If you don't you may be subject to fines.
Lorna, who forgot her book was ratted out when her entire table asked to sign it! That cost Lorna an "Irwin" ($5)
Our club is now the proud owner of a flag from the Carlsbad, California Rotary Dinner Club. President Greg was down in Southern California for a funeral and made up there last week. In addition to the social hour both before and after dinner, Greg liked that they called on a couple people and asked them to say what Rotary means to them. He would like to do this in our club so let him know if you have something you would like to share.
Why did the ghost go into the bar? For the boos!
FUN & FINES: Skip Stephan was back and told the story of getting married while on leave 39 years ago. He only had two weeks and the only Saturday available was Halloween. He paid for 39 years of Trick or Treat. Plus his son Eric, a physical therapist in the Air Force, was just promoted to Major. $50
Larry Faulk was signaled out because there was an article and picture in the Tribune. Apparently Larry doesn't like the Tribune, because he failed to come up with even an "Irwin". (Do we have anything chincier than an Irwin?) (Greg, you let him off to easy!)
Tracye Kakely announced that she will be collecting donations of food and cash to once again provide the USO Food Boxes for military families for the Thanksgiving Holiday. Here is a list of items requested: ?Dry Stuffing Canned Vegetables Gravy Canned Cranberry Sauce Instant Potatoes Canned Yams Canned Olives
Bring your donations to the meeting next week, please! For more information, call Tracye at (253) 589-8772 or Tracye@usopsa.org
OUR CHRISTMAS BASKETS This year, when we distribute Lakewood Rotary Holiday baskets in December, according to Past President Bob Zawiliski, we are going to include more information about Rotary as well as sources for assistance available to families in the area. Bob showed us a preprinted reusable grocery bag, with the Rotary logo and the 211 helpline. (Jane Whitney grabbed one to pack her cookies in!) Steve Mazoff, Dave Sclair, Ted and Carole Wier, Mark Blanchard have all joined Bob in this effort by the Public Relations committee. Books and Toys have also been collected. To help offset the cost of printing, surplus bags are being sold for $5 each. At today's meeting, $120 was raised. The committee will sell bags again next week, so come prepared. Help us spread the word about Rotary in the community!
PROGRAM OF THE DAY: Larry Faulk introduced our speaker..a local guy, graduate of Lincoln High in 1965 and later St. Martin's College in Lacey. He was recruited into the Secret Service after graduation and has recently completed a book entitled, "Walking with Presidents".
Review of Mike Endicott's Book on Amazon.com "Walking with Presidents" was all I expected and more. Not only was it interesting and exciting reading, almost like a novel at times, it was a great history lesson as well. I was impressed by Mr. Endicott's details from more than 30 years ago, which gave us an inside look at our leaders not often seen by the general public. I do hope there is a second book which continues on during his time with President Nixon. Few people, other than his family, would have known Richard Nixon better than Mike Endicott. After seeing so many anti-Nixon books, it is refreshing to get a first-hand look at the former President from someone on the inside.'
Mike received the "Distinguished Alumni" award from St. Martin's College in 2000. He retired after September 11th and has been busy with volunteer work in Pierce County and writing his book since that time. During the Q&A, Mike was asked if he ever worked for a President he didn't like. After a pregnant pause, he diplomatically said, "No, but there were a few I didn't vote for!"
He offered $5 to Lakewood Rotary for each book that he sold at today's meeting. As I left, there was a line and he was autographing copies. Thanks for an interesting program Mike!
WEEKLY RAFFLE DRAWS A WINNER The excitement for the day was not over yet as Rick Selden (yes, that lucky dog!), drew the RED CHIP for the whole schmoley.$997! I didn't have a ghost of a chance!
Why do mummies have trouble keeping friends? They're so wrapped up in themselves...
Oh..and you don't have to worry about Daylight Savings Time on Halloween. It is always on Green Witch Mean Time!
Happy Halloween! Still pushing for a Rotary Foundation of Lakewood $2 Table! Hoseb
