Our Rotary Exchange Student, Johanna Scheuba from Vienna, Austria, shared her experiences in America and information about her home country.

  • Kelly Huston, former Silverdale member.  In transition in Olympia, attending SPSCC, hoping to be an advocate for people with disabilities (Renee Ries)
  • Dr. Kevin Haugen, MD - Family practice (Allen Miller)

  • Johanna Scheuba (Vienna, Austria) and Frederica Ivanocova (Slovakia) (Mo Considine)
  • Josh Krier, Employment Specialist with Total Employment and Management (Lynn Wofford)
  • Sharon Dana - Department of Transportation (Cyndi  Zechmann)

HAPPY BUCKS:

  • Warren Carlson announced an upcoming volunteer opportunity with GRUB and said that the club has donated $2500 to GRUB - yea! Olympia Rotary. 
  • John Hough was happy to announce that Earl Hanson is leading a Group Study Exchange to the Dominican Republic.

  • Marco Pinchot reminded everyone to attend SLURP at Fish Tail Brewery on Sunday at 5 pm
  • Bob Wubbena is pleased to announce that he is leaving for the Rotary International conference in England on June 2nd and will go from there to Africa for furtherance of Malawi Water Projects
  • Fred Adair was pleased to see Johanna Schueba in a class that he was teaching in Junior Achievement.

  • Cyndi Zechmann gave a happy buck for our resident troubadour, Andy Crow.
  • Denise Keagan is proud to announce that her son has been accepted into DIGIPEN at Microsoft.  Congratulations!

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Pres. Elect Sean Padget announced that the resignation of Linda Spain from the Club has left an opening on the board of directors which is being filled by Joe Ingolgia.  Thank you, Joe.

BIRTHDAYS:

Jeff Kingsbury delighted in embarrassing the May birthdays with the following information:

  • Gretchen Sturtevant & Preston Troy share a birthday with Tammy Wynette: stand by that man!
  • Trent Hart and Deb Vinsel were born on the very day that the Beatles' "Let it Be" was released.  Peter Stroble was born that same day, 4 years after the release.

  • Ed Galligan shares a birthday with Mr. T.

  • Pat Rants was born on the birthday of Sir Lawrence Olivier

PROGRAM:

Introduced by Mo Considine, our program featured exchange student Johanna Scheuba from Vienna, Austria. 

Johanna, also known as "JoJo," was quick to point out a few facts about her native land:

  • Austria is the cultural center of Europe
  • It has a population of 8.3 million
  • It is ome of the famous "Vienna Boys Choir"
  • The Danube River flows through the city (see composer; Johann Strauss)
  • There are no Kangaroos in Austria (!!!)
  • Austria is a Federal Parliamentary Democratic Republic with incredible, fattening, marvelous foods!

Educationally:

  • Students remain in the same room and teachers roam as is standard in Europe.
  • In the 5th grade, students begin 8 years study of the English language.
  • Arts, sports and other extracurricular activities are supported by the state and exist outside of the regular school day.
