Have an Attitude...of Gratitude

by Chris Offer
Membership Matters, Vol. 3 No. 10/11 April/May 2004

Everyone loves a compliment. We have an opportunity to display an attitude of gratitude and say thank you to our members. Showing club members that they are appreciated and important is an significant step in membership retention. Here are a few suggestions for finding your style of saying Thank You, or perhaps a little tweak that will help create a new idea you've been looking for.

  • Grasp onto those flash-by thoughts! Make a written or mental note about something good you observed in a club member. Could be they need a "little happy" and you're the one who could provide it. It will make you happy too!

  • Be a good detective. By observing a persons office, home, transportation, reading materials, etc., you can personalize the recognition to them. The additional caring really says you are sincere with your appreciation.

  • Put a spot on your to-do-list for Thank You's. Make a habit of next day Thank You's, they say much more than just Thanks

  • Be a card collector. When a greeting card strikes your fancy, buy it and keep a supply of cards handy. A note or card allows you to share your thoughts and appreciation in words that might be difficult or awkward to say in person.

  • Nothing is more precious than someone's life. The day you were born the journey began. Remember BIRTHDAYS!

  • Be joyful, balloons never go out of style. Wacky balloon drawings and happy notes say you care. Use balloons to celebrate new members, completion of service projects, etc.

  • People adore food. Feed'm, feed'm, feed'm. People of all ages love treats. Candy bars with notes get a lot of smiles. Candy is terrific for recognition. Valentine's Day, Easter and Christmas are super times to say thanks, you're remembered and appreciated.
Everyone loves a compliment, pass them out with your appreciation. Mae West said that "To much of a good thing can be wonderful. I say we load'm up and move'm out!" Club members who are recognized and appreciated stay in Rotary.
