Walking and Talking - thanks to Barry!
by Falvo, Paul

This little girl finally has a chance to lead a normal life. Just like other kids. Thanks to Rotary. Thanks to St. Pat's Interact. Thanks to Barry Talbot.

It took me a month to write this. I couldn't find the words.

Barry Talbot met this little girl, because she was bedridden, she wore diapers, and she couldn't talk. Her family was asking for a wheelchair.

But, they were dealing with Barry Talbot. Barry Talbot was not satisfied to give them a wheelchair -- not when he learned her condition was operable.

Then came fund raising, spear headed by St. Pat's Interact group -- and surgery.

Now she is learning to walk. Not being bedridden, she no longer needs diapers. Now that she can go to school, she is learning to talk.

In other words -- she can be a kid.

Thanks to St. Pat's Interact. Thanks to Rotary. Thanks to Barry.

Sometimes, words really feel inadequate.
Interacting with St. Pat's
by Falvo, Paul

This week we met students from St. Pat's Interact -- the first Interact club north of 60. Interact is a service club for 14-18 year olds that is one of the strands of the Rotary International family. Rotarians are welcome at Interact Wednesday meetings -- they count as a make-up meeting!

Wheelchairs for Xmas!
by Falvo, Paul

Most of us lead lives of abundance. So do the people on our Xmas list. Yellowknife Rotary now offers us an opportunity to do something meaningful this holiday season. Instead of another unneeded gift, or more sweets to eat ... give people on your guest list a card from our Club, confirming that you made a donation that bought a wheelchair for someone who can't afford one. Bring your chequebook on Thursday!

$150 buys a chair ... which -- for someone in an impoverished country -- might mean the difference between someone being bedridden or having an active life.

You get a tax receipt.

Your friend gets a card from you -- and a photo showing the happy chair recipient.

Rotarian Questioned by Airport Security
by Wayne Overbo

I was going through security at the Edmonton Airport ...

I was going through security at the Edmonton Airport..  A young lady was handing out the bins for my carryon and jacket to go through the scanner.  She looked at me kind of oddly and said, "This may sound strange but are you part of Norex?"  I said yes and she proceeded to tell me about her excellent Northern Experience trip to Yellowknife several years ago.

The benefits of getting involved in Rotary are wide and far-reaching.  We really do have an effect on the lives of others.

Remembering Dr. Kerry Telford
by Falvo, Paul

Yellowknife Rotary lost a good friend on 29 Nov. Among the fatalities in the crash of a Seair Seaplanes de Havilland Beaver in Lyall Harbour was Dr. Kerry Telford and her infant daughter, Sarah. Dr. Telford started her practice in Yellowknife. In 1999, our Club sent her to Brazil for a Group Study Exchange Program. Kerry was a truly kind, compassionate woman, given to community and global service. Our condolences to her husband, Patrick Morrissey, and daughter Claire (age 2 1/2).

Rotary Radio Days
by Priyanke De Silva

rrrRotary Radio Days is around the corner once again. According to Paula (MacFayden) and Ken (Woodley) this is the most: popular, fund raising and awareness-generating campaigns of the YK Rotary.

Every year CJCD (Yellowknife's most popular Radio Station) donates one radio day to the Rotary Club and all advertisement revenue on that day is used by the Rotary Club for its various Charities and Community Service projects. It is a fun event as Rotary members get to produce the advertisements and be DJs on that day.
Paula urged first timers to take part in this fun and worthwhile event. The advertiser gets 5 slots of 30 seconds each for just CA$ 200. Now isn't that a great way to promote your product or service in the North and also know that your money is used for a good cause!
