On Monday April 30th, the club heard an excellent overview on the workings of the Office of the Independent Police Review Director (OIPRD) given by Natalia Welniak of the communications department of the OIPRD.  Established in 2007, the OIPRD is a civilian agency responsible for receiving, overseeing, and detailing with all public complaints against the 24,500 sworn police officers in Ontario.   A copy of her complete presentation can be found at OIPRD Presentation

At our last Directors' meeting a change was made in member dues for the coming Rotary year.  This was brought about by a reduction in the meeting meal costs as we have opted for "plate service" rather than "country style" as has been served previously.  The other change to member dues is the introduction of an optional 'per meal' payment plan in addition to the 'all in' plan in place currently.

Effective July 1, 2012, members shall choose either of the following dues plans:
  • Option A - $175 quarterly, payable first of each quarter, covers all RI fees and meal costs
  • Option B - $100 payable July 1st and January 1st to cover cost of RI fees, meal tickets purchased 7 at a time for $100.

As the Clubrunner system will be used to generate member billings and track payments for the coming year, members are asked to advise which option they wish by June 1st, 2012.

On Monday April 7th we enjoyed an excellent presentation given by Festival City Rotarian, Jean Aitcheson, on her medical mission to Guatemala last November.  Her 100+ slides gave the club a great insight into the medical needs of the Guatemalan, whether it be dental, medical or optometric.  Her presentation also included some beautiful views of the Guatemala countryside and the lives of the Guatemalans.

Shown below are (left) Jean receiving banner from Rotary Antigua Guatemala, a very active club and (right) Guatemalan women and girls wearing their traditional costumes hand loomed and embroidered huipuils (blouses).

At our April 2nd meeting we held a Club Assembly to generate ideas on where we could possibly install a Rotary clock in Tavistock.  Mayor Don McKay was on hand and actively participated in the discussion.    A couple of the preferred locations would be adjacent to the water fountain at the 5 corners or in the parkette next to the Post Office.

    Image

The club agreed to investigate further this idea and to use Festval City Rotarian John Shantz as a resource (John was responsible for the clock installed in the former Wades Flowers building in Stratford).  A Rotary International accredited supplier of clocks is The Verdin Company - please visit their website and check out their clocks Verdin Clocks

We were pleased to welcome David Johnson, Wayne Stock and Brett Schultz to our meeting on Monday March 5th to present to us the "Royal Reno" project in Queen's Park pictured here:

    Image

David explained that "special care has been taken with regards to the architectural design of the Pavilion to ensure a strong street-view presence, while still maintaining an esthetically pleasing appearance for the park environment. The Pavilion area itself is 100x60’ with 4 foot high walls along the three exposed sides. Wire chainlink screening will fill in the rest for safety reason. There is a concession area, accessible washrooms, and a general park utility/storage room. The multi-use Pavilion also boasts an 85’x22’ covered patio/picnic area."   He went on to say that the estimated price tag is $1,030,000 with government funding expected to cover about 40% of this estimate.  The Royal Reno "team" is currently approaching businesses, service clubs and the community to raise the balance.

At the recent District 7080 Oxford cluster conference, Bruce Halliday was recognized as a Benefactor of The Rotary Foundation - President Brian is seen here along with Bruce's widow Elizabeth Halliday, daughters Andrea and Katherine and DG Brian Carmichael looking on.  Brian's remarks were as follows:

"Arch Klumph, founder of The Rotary Foundation, once said 'No one can tell us what Rotary will be tomorrow, but one thing is certain: What Rotary will be tomorrow depends on what we Rotarians do today.'

"Today, we give special recognition to a deceased member of this club who made a commitment to the future. Bruce Halliday chose to make a generous gift of lasting value - a gift to the Foundation's Permanent Fund, and he is now among the ranks of Foundation Benefactors. Bruce understood that we live in a world where millions suffer from war, disease, poverty, poor medical resources and inadequate educational opportunities.  Bruce understood that if we are to save and change lives, we must continue to seek ways to bring the world closer to peace and understanding.

"Bruce made a commitment to the Foundation's endowment, a legacy that will privide an income stream to meet these urgent needs well into the future. On behalf of The Rotary Foundation Trustees, we congratulate and thank Bruce for his permanent gift to the international work of Rotary servce."

President Brian is pictured with Annie and Erich at this week's Rotary Medals dinner, held Wednesday June 8th, 2011 at the Quality Inn in Woodstock The dinner was hosted by the 5 Rotary clubs in Oxford where Rotary Medals were presented to 8 Oxford County high schools.

Our Medalists, Annie Rowland (Tavistock) and Erich Woolley (New Dundee), are graduating students from Waterloo Oxford District Secondary School, and very much epitomize the desirable qualities required of a Rotary Medalist - persons of excellent moral character, have participated in one or more school activities, be a reasonably good student and made some worthy contribution to the life of the school.  In essence Rotary Medalists have the characteristics, abilities and interest which would make them both worthy representatives of their school and personify the Rotary motto "Service Above Self".   (Check NEWS for Gazette article 062211)
