In November Club members voted to support two funding efforts, one here at home and one in the Dominican Republic.

A grant was awarded to the Kent District Library, Grandville branch in support of its Preschool Reading Program. This program, designed to bring parents and preschoolers into the library to explore books and activities together, helps families discover the resources that support reading and writing readiness.

A long standing Dominican Republic educational partner was also awarded monies to purchase books in Spanish for classrooms and library center. School director, Sandra Tineo, and Peace Corp volunteer, Kathryn Royston, will purchase Spanish language materials in the DR for the community of Nuevo Renacer. Nuevo Renacer is home to a poor community just outside of Puerta Plata on the northern coast. Reading resources are sorely needed to support school curriculum and literacy development of students. A Rotary District 6290 matching grant was awarded to this project.

The Grandville Foundation presented it's first community grant to the Grandville Branch of Kent District Library. The grant funded the purchase of an art table and loom for the library's children's area. These hand's on activity centers help children become reading and writing reading when they enter school. Pictured here are Rotarian, David Hibschman, along with Kris Vogelar and Patrice Vrona from KDL.

This year's  Barnard Scholarships were awarded to Johanna Stecher and Holly Gagnon from Grandville High and Jenison High Schools respectively. This long standing Club award is given to seniors who stand out among their class for volunteer work and academic achievement. Joanna will be attending the University of Michigan while Holly will attend Central Michigan University. Club members wish them every success in their academic endeavors!
