Members, spouses and other guests enjoyed an evening of musical entertainment at our meeting March 6th meeting.  We appreciated the musical talents of a hammer dulcimer group, aptly named "Hammer'd" .  Jim Hockin has been taking lessons on this unique instrument for a little over a year and he was kind enough to organize their appearance this evening.  Jackie Rutherford, Elaine Hall, Diane Lowes and Polly Dux kept everyone in attendance enthralled with their talents for 45 minutes of lively music.  Jackie's knowledge of hammer dulcimer history was also appreciated by everyone.   We hope that we will be fortunate enough to have them join in the Variety Show this year.   A wonderful evening of entertainment !

During the business portion of the evening, Lee Welch announced that HERTHA had met the criteria set by the Good Works Committee for obtaining the $15,000.00 grant that the club approved.  A check will be sent shortly.

An especially fun meeting was held at Rotary Park tonight!  Several Kayaks were brought by members so that all had a chance to experience the relaxation and tranquility of drifting through the backwaters of the Elk River and navigating the stumps to avoid capsizing. Our thanks and appreciation to Mel Matchett for rounding up and transporting all of the kayaks for members to use, and to Howard Richter for leading kayakers to the sunken paddlewheel boat in the middle of the river!

It all worked, as no members or guests went swimming.  Several awards should be considered, such as:  Tom Jasperse, the Lewis & Clark Award; Joanne Kreag, the Lightest On Her Knees Award; Norm Veliquette, the Best Hat Award; Dean Branson, the Most Graceful Exit Award; Jim Nothoff and Connie Nault tied for the Best Splash Award; Myrta Keelan, the Lil Squirt Award; Jeff Lane, the Most Laid Back Award; Tom Bowes, the Quickest Learner Award; Jim Sak, the Loner Exit Award; Jim Hockin, for the Best Log In the Parade; Lindy Bishop, for the Best Spontaneous and Stealth Photo Award!  Several others were earned, and we are open for your suggestions!

At our Aug 23rd meeting Jim Sak shared some of the history of the Rotary Ann's and past Rotary Ann's Rosanne Hubbell and Marjory Veliquette joined us.  Alex Pineau from the Evergreen Market presented a program about the store that he and his father run south of town.  They handle Michigan products and focus on connections with local producers.  Many club members had visited Evergreen, and I would bet that any of those present that had not will be there soon.  Myrta reported on after school programs that Cherryland Middle School is starting this year and asked for volunteers to meet with students for about an hour after school.  Bill Donberg brought us up to date on the Haiti water project, and Thane is looking for additional club members who are interested in helping with the International Committee

Bob Sherman provided us with a tour of the Burnette Foods processing facility here in Elk Rapids this evening.  The plant is currently running 24 hours/day 7 days a week processing the local red tart cherry crop into cherry pie filling.  Several members who live nearby were amazed to see how large the facility is inside, and enjoyed the opportunity to get a close up view of what happens inside.   We had a visiting Rotarian, Joanne Townsend from Ohio who has a summer home on Millers Park Drive which is quite close to the processing plant.  Joanne told us about  running around in the cherry processing area in the early 1950's when they processed outside in the open.   Mr Sherman talked about the other processing facilities that Burnette has in Michigan where they process many other fruits and vegetables.  The Elk Rapids plant runs year round and packs many different kids of pie filling for numerous customers in the US and around the world.  As we toured the plant we saw labels for pie filling in Arabic as well as numerous different brands that we commonly see on the grocery store shelves.
