Troy Rotary Kickoff for
Viva La Vino 2013
Sept 20, 2013
By J. Christopher Caldwell, Esq.
Web Site: Viva La Vino 2013 web site
Save the Date: Viva La Vino is set for Friday, September 20, 2013, at San Marino in Troy, at 6:30. We raised $27,881 in 2012 through this event and this year’s event will be even bigger and better.
You will enjoy 32 varieties of premium wine, served at 8 tables with no waiting and without using those annoying dispensers that ruin a fair pour. You will dine on prime rib sandwiches, hot and cold appetizers and desserts and enjoy the music of the Star String Quartet, courtesy of ViaMedia. Birmingham Jewelers will donate fine jewelry and a signature piece for auction. You will have an opportunity to bid on dozens of gift cards for restaurants and an array of goods and services.
If you have any questions or want to help, talk to these folks: Linda Weaver, Chairperson, Michael Caruso, Finance; Tom Gueth, Operations; Louis Harper, Marketing; John Buckert, Scholarships and Dedicated Giving; Ian Anderson, Ticket Sales; Dave Donnellon, Auction Items. We need help with all these functions, plus set up, auction placement and tear down. I am in charge of host servers; our folks did such a good job last year, I am giving them dibs on this year. If any spots open up, I will be calling you.

Entrepreneur Mark Powers
Speaks to The Troy Rotary Club
By J. Christopher Caldwell, Esq.
On April 10, 2013, Mark Powers shared his entrepreneurial spirit with the Troy Rotary Club. “Entrepreneurs are changing the world one small business at a time,” said Powers. Powers said a “serial entrepreneur” will “start a business, grow it, sell it, and start another.” He challenged the members of the Club to be entrepreneurs. He said “you may fail, you may fail in countless ways, but fail fast and learn from each failure.” “Life is a journey, a collection of experiences.” So “don’t fear failure,” fear the “regret” of not having tried.
Start with a “forward thinking idea,” a “single brilliant idea.” Then be “driven to succeed.” Have “passion.” Choose the right partners and employees and inspire them. You may have an international business but always have a local connection with each client. You must also understand youth trends.
Power’s company, 118id, is a full service digital agency. 118id designs and develops websites and delivers technologies to customers all over the world.
Then, “tithe your expertise,” said Powers, a member of the Troy Rotary Club. Powers said that a website is “valuable virtual real estate.” So, one way of giving back is to assign some free space on your website for nonprofits. Help local high schools with new technology. Give back to the community.
