Saturday May 26 & Sunday May 27

Rotarians from the Tri-City area volunteer to assist the Share Society in organizing the Food Drive.
Rotarians are gearing up to meet the challenge.
Let us see who collects the most.

This year we have to man more stores.
This means we need more volunteers.

THE MORE .... THE MERRIER.

The second largest parade in the Lower Mainland concludes in 89th year

There were about 100 parade entries and it lasted about 3 hours in downtown Port Coquitlam.  The streets were full of people, came out and watch the May Day Royal Party and community floats, marching bands, motorcycles, antique vehicles and much, much more.  Many of the community’s non- profit organizations were there as well. People from Tri-City area came out in full force to enjoy the sunny day and cheer-on the Terry Fox Foundation, the various local soccer clubs, the Girl Guides and do not forget the Boy Scouts of Canada.  Cheer on our future leaders.

We cannot think of any better way to belong to the community that we are so proud of.

The Club attended VanCity's "Movie Nite" in the Open last night in Pitt Meadows. (August 4th).We had been offered the opportunity to represent Rotary at this function for local families by our DG Elect (2012-13) Sean Hogan and we jumped at it. Having a business partner like VanCity for the organization can only lead to good things.

Club Installation of Executive for 2011 – 2012 - June 23rd, 2011

Our new Executive group were sworn in at a gathering of members, friends and Rotary Brass!  Si Senior! Mexican was the theme for the night of fun and frivolous thoughts. Mexican décor & music topped off the fun evening. Dave Binder, our new El Presidente' was led into the room wearing a large sombrero, a huge mustache and a Mexican Poncho. Dave thanked all for the efforts to make the evening fun for all – and it was.

We were fortunate to have DGN Denis Boyd swear in the new executive:

The "Odyssey of the Mind" troupe gave a sparkling performance to the Rotary Club of Port Coquitlam at their May 19th meeting. The children are from Grade 2 to grade 5 and have put this program together themselves. The coach is not allowed to touch the costumes or the production. The kids did it themselves including a "mousemobile" powered by three Mouse traps that would be a challenge to any of us! Incredible!

The Rotary Leadership Institute is setting up a new set of courses for 2011. - The courses are excellent for self-improvement as well as learning more about Rotary.

I have taken all three courses and the 4th "Master PR" course as well and can highly recommend them. The courses are excellent management courses to teach or remind you of good management principles that most of us know but may have forgotten. The world keeps changing and the people we deal with change. What worked 10 or 20 years ago may be invalid today.

I strongly recommend the courses to all members.

Zimbabwe is among one of the poorest countries in the world with very high unemployment and HIV/Aids having wiped out a whole generation. Over recent years there has been a distressing trend in Zimbabwe of babies being ‘dumped’ after they are born. This can be for a number of reasons but often key factors are an inability to care for the baby, or an unwanted pregnancy due to rape.

Dr. Stephen Milne – An Exciting Possibility!

Dr. Milne was born in Zimbabwe, Africa. He and his family enjoyed all the advantages of Caucasians in Africa at the time. He had every advantage and the other native kids had none.
Now that he lives and practices in Canada, (locally), he has a need to give back to his country of birth and help those children that are still disadvantaged.  Sounds like a Rotarian in the making!
He, his brother and a friend started an orphanage in Zimbabwe, using their own money. After due consideration, he has decided that the best way to help as many children as possible is to support and rehabilitate the existing orphanages by sending them the materials they need to do their job.
Dr. Milne has met with Dan Gallant of the Rotary World Health Network to discuss possibly sending a container of goods to the Rotary Club in the area concerned.
The Rotary Club in Zimbabwe is up to the challenge of receiving the goods to donate to specific orphanage's there.
Our challenge, should we decide to take it, will be to produce the funds necessary to get the container there. Dr. Milne will be addressing the other Tri-City clubs to try to get them on side.

Sounds like a workable plan. Are we interested in helping those children?
I expect so. We are looking into this and will report back later.

Terry Fox Hometown Run is Sunday, Sept. 18th

No Corporate Sponsorships are accepted. There are no mandatory fees for the run. No minimum donations are asked for or required of any runners. It was Terry's dream that everyone should participate and have fun. The Foundation essentially runs on voluntary help. There are only 32 paid staff throughout Canada. Over 87 cents on the dollar goes to cancer research. 3 cents are spent on administrative costs of the Foundation, and 10 cents goes to fund raising.
