| Posted by Mike Hunter on May 13, 2013 Rotary Club of Kirkland Monday, May 13, 2013 Meeting President Patti Smith called the meeting to order at 6:35 PM. Patty Sims led the Pledge and Ernie Norehad provided an Inspirational Moment regarding beer (alcohol) and water (bacteria). Guests include Nicole Shriver, our Student of the Month from Lake Washington High School, and James Nevers, a financial planner. Today was Nicole’s Birthday so we all sang “Happy Birthday” to her. James provided a factoid of his life: He lived for four years in Roswell, New Mexico. Announcements: · Patty Sims thanked members for helping with Miracle League this last Saturday. More volunteers are needed for next Saturday, May 18, and the final game on Saturday, May 25. Chris Rusnak provided each table with a composite picture of all the Miracle League players. Very well done, Chris! · Bob Webb would like all members to have their picture on the member section of our website. Bob will provide a list of those missing a picture and Greeters can ask those members to ‘stand against the wall’ and have their picture taken by Chris Rusnak. · Jerry Campo announced that Monday, August 26, will be the Salmon Bake at Rick & Peggy Ostrander’s home. · Bill Taylor updated the members on the status of Chuck Brockway and Jason Bruner, and President Patti announced that Rick’s Mother, Jeanne Ostrander, recently passed away. | | Posted by Scott Becker on May 06, 2013 President Patty called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. and Rick Walter, Camera #15, led the Flag Salute and John Woodberry was Greeter. Visiting Rotarians included Scott East and our own Bob Norman. Mike Hunter introduced our Student of the Month, Nicole Shriver, from Lake Washington High School - Bill Taylor announced that Jason Bruner is recovering from Cushing’s Syndrome and that there is a get well card being passed around. Jason, we hope you’re recovery is quick and absolute!

Pat Dye announced that the Duck Dash Kick-Off Party will be held in the Tent, at The Woodmark, June 10th, at 5:30 p.m. and will include a No-Host Bar. -
Dan Bartell thanked the Student of the Month Committee, Carl Boruck, Anne Hamilton, Jim Going, Diana Lanspa and Scott Becker, and its fearless leaders, Mike Hunter and Elizabeth Rusnak. -
Miracle League is happening again this Saturday at 9:30 at Perrigo Park. Neil Johnson is asking for about 7 more volunteers. He brought out many Evergreen Healthcare volunteers and covered the shortage, last week. Great Job, Neil! -
Scott Rethke announced that we will be having Club Assembly in two weeks and has requested that Rotarians send suggestions for topics to be discussed. -
Rick Walter, Camera #15, collected a generous donation of Happy Dollars, including $51 and a couple of stories from John Woodberry celebrating his 50th wedding anniversary! Congratulations, John! -
Pat Swenson could not attend 10 Grands so she was kind enough to donate them to a needy sole who would like to attend but did not have tickets. Bob Webb was the luck recipient! Jim going introduced our speaker, Rich Dewey, who grew up next door to Jim and is a UCLA Grad. His first job was a sports anchor in Lewiston, ID, in a 4-person office. He is now in his 20th season with FOX Sports and broadcast NFL games for 17 years. He is now Director of FOX College Football and has won 5 Regional Emmys and 1 National Emmy. Jim, of course, takes credit for rich’s success, having grown up with him and being a mentor. Rich Gave us an idea of how complicated his job is and that of his cameramen by handing out respective duty-rosters to 15 Rotarians, representing 15 cameras. Rick Walter was Camera #15 and did an excellent job filming the cheerleaders the entire night! Mark Truhan, our Student of the Month from Lake Washington High School, joined us for the last time with his parents Jim and Kerri. Mark spoke to his future plans, and experiences with us this past month. Eric Olsen reminded us that the club Golf Tournament will be at Bear Creek Country Club September 9th. Those who register before July 1 will get $10 off the $100 price. Bring guests - one can also come just for the dinner following the golf. Patty Sims reminded us to come out on Saturday for the 2nd Miracle League Game of the season. Be at Perrigo Park in Redmond at 9:30am, and bring friends and family to volunteer. We need you! Anne Hamilton showed us the concepts for this year’s Duck Dash promotional material and posters. Thanks, Anne! Tonight’s program was the honoring of our Kirkland Rotary Scholarship recipients for 2013. All were joined by parents, significant others, and representative from their schools. Kristina Walker manages the Totem Lake store (between the newly located 24 Fitness and the newly located My Home in the Lower Mall), and Connie Baranco manages the Burlington store. Dan Bartel introduced Carol McCarty, who is the Manager of the West Division Supply Chain for McDonalds. The McDonalds West Division headquarters is located in Totem Lake. Patti introduced Tom Olson, the Team Director from the Kirkland Boys and Girls Club. Announcements: Patty Sims would like you to put the following Saturday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on your calendar because Miracle League starts April 27 at Perrigo Park in Redmond (9011 196th Ave NE) April 27 May 4 May 11 May 18 June 1 June 8 – Picnic and Mariner Moose Chuck Brockway is recovering nicely from his surgery and thinks he will be back to Rotary in a couple of weeks. Brandon Honcoop reminded everyone that 10 Grands will be held again this year at the Benaroya Hall on May 11 at 7:00 pm. The price is $80 for the Rotary Orchestra level tickets and $99 if you wish to attend the Rotary pre-function. Patti handed out Legacy Project Opportunities (see attached). The club has $10,000 this year from Duck Dash Funds, and hopes to add $10,000 each of the next two years for a large project that will make a difference in the community. Please email Patti with your comments about the proposed projects and the Board will make a decision.
