Once again, the Rotary Club of Canfield will help to usher in the holidays with the Lighting of the Green, to be held on the Green at the Gazebo starting at 7PM on Friday, December 2nd. There will be Christmas carols, a live nativity scene, carriage rides, snacks, a scavenger hunt, and of course, Santa. The Green will come alive with Christmas lights at 7:45. It is a night that you and your children will remember forever. Please join us to welcome the holidays.

In 1984, Rotary International pledged to wipe out Polio from the face of the earth. Since that time, Rotarians have innoculated over 2 billion children worldwide, often negotiating cease fires from long-standing wars to permit volunteers to go in and risk their lives to innoculate children at risk. Rotary has partnered with numerous agencies, governments, and foundations in this effort, most recently with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. When we started, there were 1000 new cases a day worldwide. To date, there are just over 500 new cases in all of 2011. As our public service announcement says, we are this close.
The Rotary Club of Canfield will be holding a special raffle to support the Polio Plus program of the Rotary International Foundation, which is supporting this Polio erradication effort. It is called Something for Him; Something for Her, and tickets will be available for sale in the next few days (until Christmas). He gets four tickets for the New Year's Day game between Pittsburgh and Cleveland (courtesy of Sam and Donna Boak). She gets an incredible day of pampering for herself and a friend. The Canfield Rotary Club is continuing its efforts to expand the Fly the Flag program into every neighborhood in Canfield. For a $25 annual subscription fee, the club will put up and remove a beautiful American flag five times a year (Memorial Day, Flag Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, and Veteran's Day). On Friday, the 9th of September, Mill Creek Golf Course was a dangerous place to be. For on that day, nearly 20 intrepid golfers from the Canfield Rotary club challenged this Donald Ross design, and some actually played rather well. We are not sure who won, because it seemed like the teams were not using the same method to keep score. After golf, we enjoyed a great picnic at the home of Paul and Juanita Sherba.

Thanks to the technical wizardry and hard work of Bill Hendricks, we now have a system for taping, editing, and posting our weekly speakers on YouTube. It is perhaps fitting that the first speaker posted was our District Governor, who visited us on July 22nd. Now our members and potential members can catch speakers even when they are unable to attend a Friday meeting. We are posting the links to recent speakers on the second page of this article, and we encourage you to check it out.

Each year, the club changes over its officers at a June outing. In the past, we have called the event "The President's Ball." It is a time to thank the officers who made the previous year possible and support the incoming officers. However, it has tended to be a bit ...well let's be blunt here... boring. This year's event promises to be more relaxed, more fun, and less expensive. Invitations just went out, but if you did not get yours, click here.

Despite miserable weather, a hearty group of Canfield Rotarians and their families showed up on Saturday morning to clean up the two-mile stretch of highway 46 from Shields to Kirk Road. The lower part of the ditches were inaccessible because of the high water level, but we picked up two dozen large bags of garbage, making this part of Canfield a little nicer.

Our Second St. Jude Golf Classic was held on Monday, June 8th, at the Salem Hills Country Club. Run for many years by Ron Zockle, a former Boardman Rotarian, this event has become a summer tradition. Our theme this year was Excellent Golf Course, Great Food, Incredible Cause. We are still counting up the money we raised for St. Jude, but early indications are that it was very successful.

The Vindicator is now producing a weekly local features for each of the communities that it serves. In this local feature, they would like to spotlight residents. We have posted a form as a download file on the website to provide the information for this feature. We encourage Rotarians to consider filling it out and submitting it to the Vindicator for publication. Also feel free to pass it onto friends and neighbors.

The Canfield Fair is less than a month away, and once again the Canfield Rotary Club will be in the middle of the action. We will have a tent just west of the Main entrance to the Grandstand, next to the commercial building. Please stop by to see us and find out more about what the Canfield Rotary Club does for the community. Canfield Rotarians can sign up to help at the fair either online or at one of the meetings in August.

The Mahoning-Shenango Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals gave the 2008 Outstanding Civic Organization Award to the Canfield Rotary Club at a luncheon held on November 11th to celebrate the 18th Annual National Philanthropy Day. Bill Hendricks, accepting the award on behalf of the club, gave a moving tribute to the spirit of Rotary and the energy and leadership of Canfield Rotarians.
