The program speaker for the Rotary Club of Glenview Sunrise meeting on Thursday,  July 7, 2011 was Mary Astor Gomez, R.N., M.S.N., A.P.N. of Children's Memorial Hospital and former board member of the Little by Little organization. Mary was accompanied by Mr. Lou Marohn, a parishioner of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Glenview and a fellow volunteer in the Little by Little program in Haiti. They discussed their most recent trips to Haiti and Little by Little’s ongoing program of providing aid to alleviate the suffering of the Haitian people. Haiti is a 90 minute flight from the coast of Florida and it is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. It is estimated that 80% of its people live in poverty and that the life expectancy is only 53 years. The infant mortality is ten times the U.S. rate and the maternal mortality rate is the highest in the Americas. Only 46% of the population has access to clean water.

Ms. Gomez shared information about recent work being done at Grace Children’s Hospital in Port-au-Prince with an alliance with Illinois State Senator Kwame Raoul, architects and construction leaders from Children's Memorial Hospital building the new Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine Center for Global Health, and the University of Illinois-Champaign. The goal isto help rebuild Grace Children’s Hospital and offer on-going medical educationand support to establish a premier pediatric facility in Port-Au-Prince.

Mr. Marohn shared updates about Little by Little’s recent visits to Haiti. Little by Little’s work in Haiti began with the first visit in 2006 when local Glenview area volunteers provided medical care for people  in the remote mountain village of Gramothe.  Little by Little’s focus in the 2006 visit was to treat infections, intestinal worms, and skin infestations such as scabies and fungus conditions that commonly affected all of the residents of the village. Little by Little provided vitamins, peanut butter, and educated many women about the benefits of breast-feeding. The patients were taught about how to maintain their clean water source and prevent re-infestation of worms and scabies. The initial mission was so successful that the organization returned with a larger group in January 2007 and served more than 1,000 Haitian people in one week. The volunteers were amazed to see how the simple care delivered the prior year had improved the general health of the women and children of the village.

On January 12, 2010 a catastrophic earthquake struck Haiti. Centered just outside Port-au-Prince, the quake caused unimaginable damage. At the time of the earthquake, Little By Little’s Team 7 was just completing their week long medical mission trip at Mountain Top Ministries’ (MTM) clinic in Gramothe. Immediately after the earthquake these same 23 volunteers became first responders at a nearby hospital which had very limited supplies, one doctor, and a few nurses.  Those efforts were just the beginning of whatwas to be a humanitarian aid effort of a scale never seen before.  For more information about Little by Little’swork in Haiti please visit the website  http://littlebylittlehaiti.org

The program speaker for the June 30, 2011 Rotary Club of Glenview Sunrise meeting was the Honorable Thomas Schnoell, General Consul for Austria in Chicago.  Mr. Schnoell holds a law degree and a masters in law and has held official positions for the government of Austria prior to his appointment as Consul General.

In his Rotary program, Mr. Schnoell reviewed the modern history of Austria with particular emphasis on the pre- and post-WW 2 effect on the nation.  He stated that after being occupied during the war, the nation became independent in 1955 and, in the same year, joined the United Nations.  He explained the crucial role Austria played as a neutral nation in the time of the Cold War and that in 1979, the headquarters of the United Nation was moved to Vienna.  Later, in 1995, Austria, with the popular support of its citizens, chose to join the European Union.  The European Union, he defined, was an organization of “special construction” which represents 500 million citizens and grew to 27 countries.  Croatia will become nation 28 in 2012.  He discussed the challenges of nations losing national power to join the EU and the difficulties of dealing with 23 different languages and converting currencies.  He praised the EU for its economic and foreign policy successes which have provided the basis for the longest period of peace in European history.  He emphasized the role of fewer obstacles among EU nations permitting free trade, free movement of people, and for the majority of EU citizens, a common currency.

On Thursday, June 2, we heard a riveting program presented by Sam Harris, a child survivor of the Holocaust.  Mr. Harris was born on May 13, 1935, in Dublin, Poland and was only four years old when World War II broke out in 1939. As a young child, he survived six years in the Dublin and Czestochowa Nazi concentration camps in Poland.  Under the protection of his older sister, Sam was one of the few Jewish children to survive the camps.  Sam’s parents and four siblings were killed in Treblinka death camp.  He was liberated from the camp by the Russians when he was nine and then lived in orphanages in Poland until he came to the United States in 1948.  After a period living in a foster home in Chicago, Sam was adopted by the Harris family in Northbrook.  During his youth, he joined the Boy Scouts, played sports, and became the senior class president of New Trier High School.

Mr. Harris is a retired insurance executive and a Northbrook Rotarian who is an active member of the community. He is the former President of the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center and speaks extensively on the local and state level about his experiences during the Holocaust.  The museum, located in Skokie, Illinois has a collection of 11,000 evocative objects donated by Midwest Holocaust survivors.  The museum stands as testament to the choice the survivors made of life over loss and hope over heartbreak and stimulates universal questions about human rights.  Mr. Harris is also the author of the book Sammy: Child Survivor of the Holocaust, which is his memoir.

On Sunday, September 26th, 2010, the Rotary Club of Glenview Sunrise hosted its 13th annual Glenview Run. This year's run, the "Chase The Bear Glenview Run", featured a 1-mile Family Fun run-walk plus CARA certified, chip-timed 1- mile, 5K and 10K races. The 2010 Run was a tremendous success and a great community and family fun event. Thank you to everyone involved and please read the entire story.
