ANALOGY OF THE WHEEL EMBLEM OF ROTARY

The founders of Rotary chose a wheel as their emblem suggested by the name. They did not choose a rubber-tired vehicle wheel, for Rotary carries no passengers. They did not choose a smooth faced pulley wheel dependent on friction. They did choose the positively powerful gear wheel with teeth designed for heavy duty.

The teeth of the wheel are the members of Rotary. They do their work intermeshed with other men. If one tooth is broken or absent the work of the wheel is impaired or stopped. There is no room on the wheel for broken or absent teeth. The teeth are solidly bound together by the rim which is the Club.

The spokes of the wheel are the meetings of the Club which at regular intervals impart to the Club and its members the inspiring and resistless drives of the central shaft which is the spirit of Rotary International.

While Roatry has adapted to the times, the basics of "Service Above Self" remain intact.

I am pleased to inform you that earlier today RI President-Elect Ron D. Burton announced the 2013-2014 theme, “Engage Rotary, Change Lives”

The theme announcement was made during the opening plenary session of the International Assembly, the annual training event in San Diego for incoming district governors. In explaining how he came to choose the theme, President-Elect Burton said, “If we really want to take Rotary service forward, then we must make sure that every single Rotarian has the same feeling about Rotary that each one of us here has today. We need to make sure that every Rotarian has a meaningful role to play, that they’re all making a contribution, and that their contribution is valued.”

The Rotary Club of Highland Park Highwood has purchased $1,200 worth of new coats and winter outerwear for needy children at Oak Terrace elementary school and Northwood Junior High School.  Those needy children include junior high students who often walk to and from school and elementary children who would not be able to enjoy recess activities without snow pants once the weather turns cold.  More than 70 percent of children at Oak Terrace and approximately 45% of children at Northwood are from low-income families.

The 20 coats and 23 pairs of snow pants purchased by Rotary will be given to the children just before winter break begins on December 21st. The generous Rotarians of Highland Park/Highwood will ensure that 43 of our children will stay warm this winter. That is Service Above Self!

On Monday December 3, 2012 The Rotary Club of Highland Park/Highwood honored twelve outstanding teachers from North Shore School District 112 who were recipients of the 2012 Illinois State Board of Education Those Who Excel awards, finalists for the Chicago-metropolitan area Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching and finalists and recipients of the Highland Park Community Foundation’s Golden Apple Award

The Those Who Excel Awards Program annually recognizes and honors people who have made outstanding contributions to public and nonpublic elementary and secondary education.

The annual Golden Apple Award was established in 2010 to recognize outstanding teachers in the Highland Park school systems. By honoring an exceptional educator, the Highland Park Community Foundation strives to demonstrate the strength and impact of excellent teaching in helping young people to reach their potential.

This appeared in the Rotarian in 1938.

Keep "The Rotarian" close to your desk, or have your wife put it next to your easy chair, so when you reach for a cigar, cup of coffee or a highball with your right hand, you can reach for "The Rotarian" with your left.

Still good advice!
