The meals are part of the program "Kids Against Hunger" which has approximately 100 similar sites serving people around the world. The nutrient enhanced rice casserole is made with a flavored nutrient base, rice, soy and dehydrated vegetables and is sealed in airtight bags with a shelf life of several years. The cost per meal is 25 cents, each bag has 6 meals which is cooked by adding water which boils for 20 minutes (also killing water borne impurities). The Rotary Club of McHenry donated $ 1800 to purchase and package a pallet of meals. Part of the costs helps pay for the distribution of the meals to orphanages and missions assisting the needy in Nicaragua. | | Posted by Donna Schaefer on May 11, 2012 High winds and extreme heat did not keep area residents from lining up for a food distribution sponsored by McHenry Township and staffed by the Rotary Club of McHenry members and families.
