We received word this week that The Rotary Foundation has released more than $50,000 to support the Rotary Club of La Paz San Pedro Bolivia.  Our club joined with 6 other US cubs to help fund this, turning our $2,500 contribution into $54,000. These funds will help train clinic staff and provide for the manufacturing, fitting and related medical care of over 130 patients to receive above the knee prosthetic legs. Pictured here is the clinic's soccer team, each proudly showing off their legs before resuming practice.

A big thanks to John Gilcrest for bringing this project to us, to our club members who contributed to the grant, and to all our members who contribute each year to The Rotary Foundation's Annual Programs Fund, which contributed more than $39,000 toward this project!

The Rotary Club of Winnetka-Northfield continues its 88 year tradition of supporting the good works of organizations locally and throughout the world with its annual presentation of community grants.  Patti Van Cleave, President of the Winnetka-Northfield Rotary Charitable Foundation, and Kristen Jasinski, Club President, presided over the presentations at the club’s weekly lunch meeting at the Winnetka Community House.

“Rotary is all about “Service Above Self”, said Ms. Van Cleave.  “With these grants we are helping to provide physical and spiritual wellness, shelter and educational assistance to those in need, on the North Shore, in Chicago and in faraway places.”

Members of our club and some friends gathered at Little Ricky's for good times, with President Elect Liz Taylor and Gina DiSandro stepping up as celebrity bartenders.  All tips for the evening helped support our April 14th Kids Against Huger Food Packing event.  We raised enough money to provide 1,300 meals!

Hannah Warren and Jhoole weaversFormer Ambassadorial Scholar Hannah Warren of Rockford addressed our club today and told of the fair trade social enterprise she has created in India.  Hannah met and befriended these highly talented weavers living a life of extreme poverty.  Moved to help them leverage their talents to lift themselves out of poverty, Hannah has created, with the help of many Rotary Clubs throughout the US and in India, a weavers coop social enterprise.

Our club has pledged $5,000 toward a $200,000 Rotary Matching Grant program.  Our contribution will be matched by other local clubs, our Rotary District and The Rotary Foundation, increasing our gift to more than $25,000.  You can contribute through our club's charitable foundation by clicking here.

Take a look at this video about the project recently produced by Rotary International.

ImageLaura Ann Johnson (daughter of club member Bill Johnson) visited recently to say THANK YOU for our community grant supporting her youth services program in Northern Michigan.  An overview of her program follows:

A middle school located in eastern michigan and one of the first schools to ever attend the Leelanau Outdoor Center (LOC) when it began in 1994. They stayed for 4 days 3 nights and brought about 60 students 6th graders to camp.   They had a number of students that could not pay for their stay at LOC and the Rotary grant helped pay for many of their students.

Glencoe resident and entrepreneur Kristen Jasinski was installed as the 87th president of the Rotary Club of Winnetka-Northfield during a celebratory picnic in the gardens of the Winnetka Community House Thursday evening.  The event, attended by more than 70 Rotarians and friends of Rotary, included tasty bar-b-que, a concert by cellist/rapper MC Kato and a silent auction benefiting the club’s community grants program.  The ceremony completed shortly before the storm blew in, chasing the concert inside.

Rotary International, the world’s first service organization, is made up of over 33,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas. Its members form a global network of business, professional and community leaders who volunteer their time and talents to serve their communities and the world.

Rotary's motto, Service Above Self, exemplifies the humanitarian spirit of the organization's more than 1.2 million members. Strong fellowship among Rotarians and meaningful community and international service projects characterize Rotary worldwide.

Rotary enjoys a rich and sometimes complex tradition and organizational structure, with many programs that can be confusing to new and even not-so-new members. This website offers a basic Rotary education — the fundamental knowledge that will make every member better informed about Rotary and proud to be a Rotarian.
