The Rotary Club hosted a music contest with three of the local high schools.  Eddie Gutierrez of Bell High School won first prize playing a great guitar solo.  Eduardo Angeles of Maywood Academy High School took second place with a great piano solo.  Cassandra Lopez from Bell High was in third place playing the Alto Saxophone.  All of the students had practiced many hours and all did a great job.  For many it was the first time in front of an audience.  There were eight great soloists.  They will be added in a photo album check it out.

The Hilton Spa and Hotel in San Diego, CA was filled with Rotary membes from greater Los Angeles.CLICK on more below to see the video.  District 5280 and district 5260 (San Fernando Valley) have now merged and we will now have 77 clubs in our district.  Hospitality night was great.  Tena Johnson made the great quesadillas and the other clubs in the district provided a plethora of food, drink, and deserts.  The big Strawberries with brown sugar and sour cream, baclava from Rancho Park, Wine, Margueritas and Mai Tais were everywhere.  The frozen mudslides were interesting to say the least.  Music DJ started the music.  The Hawaiian/Polynessian dancers shown in this video were great and all their dances were enjoyed.  The kids from about 18 months to almost grown up enjoyed the festivities.  The RotarActers were the most energetic!  It was a great conference.  Great ideas, projects, and making of new friends.  Our District is in the top five of Districts in terms of Rotary Foundation giving.  Enjoy.

Speech Contest Guru Jim Boltinghouse organised and chaired another Club annual high light program. Local schools  Bell, Bell Gardens, and Maywood were represented by a quality groupp of 11th and 12th graders, each with well developed abilities to think and speak creatively on various topical aspects of life with a connection to our 4 way test values.

Creative twists were developed with a wide range of topics such as, Inequality between the sexes, School Lunches, Political Lobbyists undue influence and corruption, Community Crime and prevention, Lifestyle, Obesity and change, and Stereotypes and Street People were alll canvassed with varying degrees of skill, persuasion and 4 Way Test relevance. What was common to all candidates were enthusiasm, confidence and preparation.

The winners were:
1st place $200 Boris Wilggins  -  Bell High School
2nd place $125 Guillermo Portillo - Maywood Academy High School
3rd place $75 Kenneth Preciado -  Bell Gardens High School

Ever willing the Bell High School Interact Club Students turned out to help pack supplies for the Help the Children Foundation.  Stephanie Stegall, President Elect, of the Rio Hondo Vernon Rotary Club is the Executive Director and welcomed the help from the enthusiastic students.  Bell High School has one of the largest Interact Clubs in the District.  Joel Tepper, EDu, is their long time advisor and is responsible for managing all of the enthusiasium that is generated by these fine young people.  Thanks go to Marie Fremd, New Generations Director for the pictures.  These are the Rotarians of Tomorrow.

Shirley Giltzow, Rotary District 5280's chairperson for End Polio Now was our speaker at the last meeting.  She was happy to inform us that for the first time ever the country of India has gone 12 months without a case of polio.  There were only 622 cases of polio known last year.  There are only three countries in the world; Pakistan, Nigeria and Afghanistan that have recorded cases of polio.  There may have been some cases of polio in China but likely this was cross border travel from Afghanistan.  Rotary received a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation for $355,000,000 with the proviso that Rotay match this with $200,000,000.   Rotary has raised $185,000,000 of this money so far.  Rotary has several partners in this massive project.  The major partner being The World Health Organization.  Only two drops of the vaccine are required to protect  child from this disease.

This year's District Conference will be held at the Hilton Resort and Spa in San Diego.  You may make reservations online or get a paper registration from Eddie Tafoya.  We will have a great hospitality suite for the Bloody Mary Sunday Morning Event.  There will be Hawaiian Quesadillas for hospitality night.  It is a great event.  Come and see what the other clubs in the district have been accomplishing this year.
