| Posted by Ken Eastman on May 21, 2012 Hundreds of kids and their parents, representing more than a dozen local elementary and middle schools, enjoyed our Hap Rapp Memorial Track Meet on Saturday, May 19th at Camarillo High School. The annual event began in 1959, and is the Camarillo Rotary Club's oldest community service project. Seven of the ten trophy winners (most points in his or her class) are shown in the photo. The Guy Craig award (a cash donation to the winning school) for best preparedness, participation and sportsmanship was won by Santa Rosa Technology Magnet School. Congratulations to Dave Drumright for chairing the event again this year, and thanks to all club members who showed up to help! | | Posted by Ken Eastman Our 20th Annual Care for Kids Golf Classic will tee off on Monday, July 16, 2012 at Spanish Hills Golf & Country Club inCamarillo. To mark the special occasion of our 20th Classic, our honoree this year will be Dr. Steve Elson, CEO of Casa Pacifica Centers for Children & Families. That pledge has now been completed, and the final $5,000 installment was presented at a special club meeting held at the Library on August 17th. | | Posted by Ken Eastman Five business professionals and a Rotarian from South Korea recently visited Camarillo as part of the Rotary Foundation's Group Study Exchange (GSE) Program. The exchange is an opportunity for young professionals who are not Rotarians to travel to another country so they can learn how their vocation works in that country and also act as goodwill ambassadors.
In addition to attending a meeting of the Camarillo Rotary Club, the group's local activities included visits to the Camarillo Premium Outlets shopping center, the Commemorative Air Force exhibit at Camarillo Airport (see photo), and other Ventura County attractions, as well as other area Rotary Clubs and the Rotary District 5240 Conference in Carpinteria.
| | Posted by Ken Eastman The Camarillo Rotary Club recently donated 6,500 pairs of reading glasses to a remote agricultural tribe of villagers living in northern Thailand. “These glasses are for (those) people who are not fully integrated into the Thai economy and don’t get a lot of services,” said Club President Max Copenhagen, who spearheaded the project. “They’re excited to get these because they can learn how to read and learn how to do other handiwork.” The club partnered with the Chiang Mai North Rotary Club in Thailand to deliver the eyeglasses and worked with Rotary International and the Rotary Club of Fillmore to fund the project. Camarillo Rotary purchased the eyeglasses as kits through Vision Quest, a project started by the Rotary Club of Iola, Kan. The $250 kits include all that is needed to assemble 314 pairs of reading glasses.
The kits are sent to Rotary members throughout the world. Each Rotarian will train an individual from the village being helped to make the glasses. The goal is to create jobs and income for small, rural villages such as those in northern Thailand. | | Posted by Ken Eastman The YouTube website now has dozens of Rotary-related videos available for viewing, including an audio speech by Paul Harris, the founder of Rotary.
