Hobnobbing with Helen

BY HELEN ANN THOMAS

It was a hoot and a half. The Breakfast Rotary’sAnnual Luau Barn Party was its usual smashing success. When the Breakfast ClubRotarians boast, “It’s the fun-nest thing in town,” they are right on target.

This year’s rowdy gathering was held May 14 from 5:30 p.m. onward at the Fairpark’s big barn. Tickets were a modest $50 each. Such a deal, really, for all you can eat and drink. There were lots of things to spend money on, too. As well as after-auction dancing to Jay Turner’s dee-jay doings.

Chartered on April 25, 1984, our Club has historically been committed to active involvement in our community through financial and hands on support for our youth, family, seniors, and the less fortunate. We are continuously seeking opportunities to serve. We support various scholarships and aid for students of all age ranges. Our leadership in the Annual Christmas Parade of Lights, development of Rotary Centennial Park, and our participation in numerous community activities and non-profit events; are prime examples of our on-going commitment to our community.

Rotary is the greatest worldwide service organization on the planet. There are over 34,000 clubs in nearly 200 countries united to support its humanitarian goals. Our Club is very supportive, both financially and with hands on service projects of International scope. We are a sustaining 100% Paul Harris Fellows Club, which means all active members have committed to at least one fellowship, or a $1,000 contribution to 'The Rotary Foundation' (TRF). In fact, nearly 50% of our Club's 168 Paul Harris Fellows, are 'multiple donors' to this Foundation. The Club has supported several projects in several Countries, including Mexico, Peru, Phillipines, Guatemala, Haiti, Sri Lanka, Zambia, and Nigeria.

Leigh Rubin, creator of "Rubes" was our keynote speaker for this successful event.  Members of Rotary Clubs from Nipomo, Santa Maria, Santa Maria South, and Santa Maria Breakfast participated at the Radisson on April 12 @ 6PM, hosted by Breakfast Club President Jean-luc Garon.

Members of the Club participated in a Trivia Contest that supports the services for kids through VTC Enterprises. Over 100 participants were involved. They had their hands full because of the 12 'trivia savvy' Breakfast Rotarians!

But it was done the Breakfast Rotary way; by honoring the fathers of Tim, Frank, and Rob; the park received more trees at a special offsite early chili morning at the park! The weather didn't seem to bother anyone.

Once again; over 40 Breakfast Rotarians and spouses supported and participated in the Special Olympics Dinner of Northern Santa Barbara County. Support for these kids is one of the many groups that benefit from hands on and financial support of our Club.

President Jean-luc displays banners presented to our club that recognizes us for our support of the Rotary Foundation.

Club Service makes this club what it is; a giving, caring, and fun group of community servants. A large group of Club spouse's showed up at the Dec 23 morning meeting to honor Lt. Jake Bradfield, who recently returned home from Afghanistan. He gave an enlightening perspective of life in that part of the world.

Thanks to donations from club members that was coordinated by Mike Gibson, a check for $1725 was presented to the USO on behalf of Lt. Jake Bradfield at the Club's Dec 23 meeting.

As part of the annual Christmas Parade, the Group 12 Rotarians all support a winter food drive for the Salvation Army. Several tons of canned goods are collected along the parade route for this needed community service.

Over 10,000 Santa Marians enjoyed the 16th annual parade sponsored and put on by the 4 area Rotary Clubs. Over 100 Rotarians volutneer their time for this worthwhile event spearheaded by Breakfast Rotarians Mike Gibson and Dave Wright.

Governor Deepa Willingham shows off her support of the Rotary Foundation by covering her car with the 'END POLIO NOW' theme.

Rotarians have supported CASA for many years and this year was no exception as we had 24 Rotarians and spouses attend the CASA at the Vineyard at Tres Hermanas Winery.

While several club members were attending the District Conference, these hearty Breakfast Rotarians went on a day hike in San Luis Obispo County. Club Service activities like these keeps our Club strong................

Honorary Rotarian Betty Tibbs was on hand at this special meeting, along with the Goleta North Club, to make a scholarship contribution on behalf of her husband and long time Breakfast Rotarian, the late Dr. Bill Tibbs. The Tibbs family has supported the efforts of the Los Prietos Boys Camp for many years.

President Jean-luc poses with a group of local students as the Club raised over $1,500 to support our kids with needed supplies. Thanks to Coy Travers for spearheading the project.

The Club's exchange student has been actively involved with our activities over the year. He has provided two programs and attends most meetings.

The Breakfast Rotary Club (anchored by (Judith Mackey) supported the Central Coast Literacy Council by their participation in the Central Coast Literacy Spelling Bee.

The Breakfast Rotary Club works hard to support the Friends of Waller Park and the YMCA by selling tri-tip sandwiches made by our infamous Rotary BBQ team. Sandwich sellers Tim and Doug take time out to pose!

Marian Medical Center Foundation's much anticipated Waiters' Night was held Saturday, August 7, 2010 at Tres Hermanas Vineyard and Winery. Twelve Club members attended and the Club contributed $1,250 towards the event that will benefit Marian's community-wide programs and services.

Once again, the Breakfast Rotary Club will spearhead a drive for gathering donations from our membership and the community for the purpose of purchasing school supplies for local area classrooms.

Schools are always squeezed for funds. But recent economic downturns and budget cuts have made it even more difficult for teachers to keep basic supplies in their classrooms. Please use the attached link and make your pledge. Thanks you for your support!

MAKE A PLEDGE!

Our Club's 'Outbound' Exchange Student for this year is Micaela Stewart. A Righetti HS graduate, she will be leaving for Poland later this month.

As a Club and Vocational Service project; the Arts was supported by 24 club members/spouses for the PCPA performance of "West Side Story". Thanks to Rotarian Betty Miller for organizing the event.

The Junior Livestock Auction at the Santa Barbara County Fair is an on-going Vocational Service project involving nine (9) area Rotary Clubs. An annual contribution ranging from $12,000 and $15,000 from these Clubs each year ensures that our youngsters receive fair value for their livestock, while teaching them basic management skills about the business side of agriculture. This year's event was held on July 17, 2010.

The Breakfast Rotary Club, along with other area Rotary Clubs, support community events, such as Concerts on Sundays during the summer months at Rotary Centennial Park.

The Breakfast Rotary Club, led by Rotarian Carol Bradfield, played a significant role in the success of the American Cancer Society's "Relay for Life" event held at the Elks UNOCAL Arena.

A great evening at the Boys and Girls Club of Guadalupe was had by the 17 Breakfast Rotarians who partnered with Boys and Girls Club members in an olympic style competition of sorts.

You get out of Rotary what you put into it. On June 19th, the Santa Maria Breakfast Rotary Club honored the outstanding achievements and leadership of Ted Ortega, as he stepped down as their President following a very successful Rotary year.

In the world of Rotary, there are identified elements that make what is considered an effective club. A club needs to employ meaningful service projects, support the Rotary Foundation, grow and retain its membership, and prepare its future leaders. Under Ortega's leadership, the club did quite well in meeting all of those objectives.

A member of the Rotary Club of Santa Maria Breakfast since 1998, Frank served as their 20th Club President in 2003-2004. That year, his Club was named 'Outstanding Medium Size Club' for District 5240. He held Club offices as Secretary, International Service, Vocational Service, and TRF; as well as their Rotary Centennial Park co-chair.
