Dalton Rotary Club received numerous awards at the District Conference.  Some awards are shown here, all of the awards are a reflection of the great work done by the board and each of our members.  We received special recognition for several initiatives including Ambassadorial Scholarship Training program.  Of particular note are the Change Maker Award and the Presidential Citation, both of which are awarded by the Rotary International President, Kalyan Banerjee.  There were a limited number of clubs in our district that received those awards.

Board sets policy for reimbursement of GRSP student Host Families

The Rotary Club of Dalton has a long history of hosting GRSP students going back to 1951, hosting students from all over the world.  Becoming a host family for a GRSP student is a huge but rewarding commitment for a member of our club.  Host families have typically provided significant financial support to the students they host in a variety of ways including gas, food, dinners at restaurants, hotel stays, tickets to games, entrance fees for tourist attractions, Christmas presents, and many other items.  As such, the board felt, that to encourage and strengthen the desire of Rotarians to become host families and take on this year long commitment, a budget has been established of $1,000.  This budget item can be used by the board to compensate host families for reimbursable expenses with appropriate documentation up to this total amount.  If you have questions about being a host family, you can contact a board member, Rotarian who has served as a host family, or Bill Bowen.

Today’s Rotary speaker was newly appointed Athletic Director at Dalton State College, Derek Waugh. Waugh not only gave an informational presentation on DSC athletics, he captivated the audience with his sense of humor. He said he recently saw a nature show on tv show about the wolverine. He said the wolverine is a small animal, but quite fierce. The show pictured a wolverine being attacked by two cougars. At first the wolverine ran to escape the cougars, but once it reached its den and two small babies, it turned on the cougars and fought them both off. “Our mascot may be a road-runner,” said Waugh, “but we are going to take on the personality of a wolverine.”

Hi Mark!

So nice to hear from you. I've been following Alexandra on Facebook and it looks like she is having just as much fun as I had last year. I can't help feeling a bit jealous of her and Kathrin - I would have loved to stay another year, it was so amazing. But the beauty of the program is of course that we are not supposed to stay, but to go home and tell people in our own countries about our experiences and learn from each other. If we all stayed the program would have a different effect. Although I know this, I still wouldn't hesitate if I got the chance to go back - so please call me if one of the girls wants to go home and you then have a free spot in the program!
