The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has activated its Emergency Operations Center, UNICEF has officially activated an Interdivisional Emergency Coordinating Committee operating directly under the deputy executive director, and WHO has moved its polio operations to its Strategic Health Operations Centre.Such measures are reserved for responding to global health emergencies, such as the H1N1 pandemic and the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami -- and will generate a massive surge in technical capacity, real-time tracking of program performance, and immediate implementation of corrective action plans as necessary. In March, The Rotary Foundation Trustees reaffirmed that polio eradication is the Foundation’s urgent priority. In addition, Rotary senior leaders have launched a series of one-on-one meetings with the heads of state of the polio-endemic countries.“We need everyone’s commitment and hard work to eradicate polio and cross the finish line,” says Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of CDC. “It won’t be easy, but together we can eradicate polio forever and for everyone.” | | Posted by Nina E. Kim Conroy, Director of the Gwinnett County Department of Transportation, spoke at the noon meeting of the Rotary Club of Lawrenceville on May 21, 2012. His subject was the Transportation Investment Act, which will be up for vote in the referendum on July 31. He emphasized that his main goal was to educate and provide information; he was not indicating how to vote. First, he provided factual information about the provisions of the act, emphasizing that it covers a 10-year collection period beginning January, 2013, and that the vote was region-by-region. It could be approved in one region and not another, and funds raised in one region were to be spent in that region. Gwinnett is part of the Atlanta Region, a 10 county group. Projections for Gwinnett’s share of the funds are that 85% would be allocated for regionally identified projects ($898.9 million) and 15% for locally identified projects ($178.5 million). He then went on to describe specific projects planned in Gwinnett County, focusing on improvements along the I-85 corridor, improved access to neighboring counties, and cross-county connectivity. His Power Point demonstration offered detailed information on specific locations, as well as plans and financial breakdowns. | | Posted by Nina E. Freeman on Apr 25, 2012 | | Posted by Nina E. Freeman on May 17, 2012 RCL After conference attendee reports from Rotary Club of Lawrenceville District 6910 Conference Why did eight members of our Rotary Club of Lawrenceville go to District conference? It required missing work for a day or two, driving five hours across Georgia to Hilton Head and then back home, paying convention registration fees and hotel expenses, and giving up a spring week-end at home.
