The projects undertaken over the years have been many and varied. Drawing from a base of experience within the business community Palms to Pines Rotary club has been able to have an influence that reaches around the world.
| Posted by Jim Brock on May 20, 2012 Last week our Palms to Pines Rotary Foundation distributed funds to several Coachella Valley organizations our club supports. Representatives from the COD Foundation, Palm Desert Historical Society, Living Desert and Coachella Valley Rescue Mission all attended and received donations presented by Chair John Marman. This year our club foundation will distribute nearly $18,000 to 15 Coachella Valley organizations. Also last week, we hosted three of our PRYDE representatives who gave us a brief report on their leadership weekend and we also learned that John Marzicola, a club Charter Member, is ill. Send John a card to 79 Lake Shore Dr., Rancho Mirage, CA 92270. Lillian Roberts was our lucky Rotary Raffle winner and pocketed $10. | | Posted by Jim Brock on May 13, 2012 President-Elect Dana Tarnow conducted the second of three club assemblies last week to discuss club and vocational service. Club members discussed the need for additional social events and we also discussed some planned “field trips” to visit organizations our club foundation supports. We learned the club is also planning to participate in our District 5330 4 Way Test speech contest and that we will be hosting a Palm Desert Chamber of Commerce Mixer on Wednesday, July 18 at Margaret Claggett’s Rabo Bank. The mixer will be an excellent opportunity to tell our Rotary story to many potential members. Also last week, Rob Strain announced that he will be emailing members to encourage the support of the local business which support our club’s Night of Magic. Let’s support those who support us! In addition to our regular Rotary Raffle (won by Cal McIntosh who donated his $8 winnings back to the club), Butch Hartman conducted a special Mother’s Day Raffle. Dana Tarnow and guest Aurora Wilson took home $50 a piece. Thanks, Butch! | | Posted by Jim Brock on May 05, 2012 Last week we had our annual visit from this year’s RYLA students. Again this year, Palms to Pines sponsored juniors from Palm Desert and Xavier Prep high schools. The weekend leadership academy took place in Crestline and our representatives joined over 300 other Southern California high school students. As usual, all attendees were enthusiastic in their praise for the weekend and reported learning leadership and teamwork at the event. They’re already planning a reunion this summer and one lucky Xavier Prep student reported even getting a date for this year’s prom over the weekend! Thanks to Margaret Claggett for heading up this year’s selection team. Also last week, Butch Hartman recognized the 15th anniversary of his El Paseo jewelry store with a $100 contribution to the club and Sojourner Ernie Hawks bid the club adieu for the summer. Ernie made it two raffle wins in a row last week but, after cleaning us out a week ago, only managed to draw a two this week and took $2 back to San Jose with him. | | Posted by Jim Brock on Apr 29, 2012 Jack Moore, an Ambassador for the Palm Springs Air Museum, was our speaker last week. Jack is an Air Force veteran and has been a Eureka Rotarian since 1975. The mission of the museum is to preserve, educate and honor, according to Jack. The museum is home to one of the world’s largest collections of flyable WWII aircraft and provides a venue for exhibits and activities. It attracts over 100,000 visitors annually. Nearly 200 volunteers are dedicated to the museum’s mission. Annual museum memberships range from a $10,000 Platinum Wings business membership to a $55 individual membership. Our Rotary Mega-Raffle reached $389 last week and only Aces remained in the deck. Sojourner Ernie Hawks had his ticket drawn and, being the Rotarian he is, promptly donated $289 to our Palms To Pines Foundation and directed it be used to help fund next year’s RYLA program. Ernie will use the rest of the money for gas when he returns to Mountain View for the summer. Thanks, Ernie! | | Posted by Jim Brock on Apr 22, 2012 Deborah Schwartz, public art coordinator for the City of Palm Desert, was with us last week to explain the city’s public art program and to tell us about the current installations on El Paseo as well as provide a preview of new artwork which will be displayed in coming months. Deborah has held the Palm Desert position for nine years and has more than 20 years experience in the arts field. Developers of projects within the city pay a percentage of project costs dedicated to public art. A developer can fund a piece of art at the site of the project or the funds can be dedicated to public art elsewhere in the city. Also last week, Donna-Lee Ekstrom shared photos from Night of Magic with the club. We hope to add photos from the event to the club website soon! The Rotary Mega-Raffle was down to a 50-50 chance last week with only sevens and Aces remaining in the deck. A Washington state Rotarian pulled a seven so this week’s ticket will be worth nearly $400! Some lucky Rotarian will walk away with the money this week! | | Posted by Jim Brock on Apr 15, 2012 Pres.-Elect Dana Tarnow conducted a Club Assembly last week to discuss the future of Palms To Pines Rotary. We’ve had two recent club surveys and Dana went over the results of those surveys. Nearly every respondent mentioned the need for new members and the need for improved attendance of existing members as priorities. We received some great input from club members as well as visitors and Dana is planning additional Assemblies to discuss other aspects of our club. Dana has signed our club up to host a Palm Desert Chamber mixer in July. This event will be ideal venue to share our Rotary story with potential new members. We’re also starting a Business Directory which will be posted to our club website so members, Sojourners and guests can find our services. Dana is also taking orders for Palms To Pines shirts for members. Order yours this week! Also last week, John Marman had a great opportunity to win over $300 in the Rotary Mega-Raffle but only managed to pull a 10 to recoup his investment. Buy tickets this week! | | Posted by Jim Brock on Apr 08, 2012 With us last week was Bob Bogard, director of marketing communications at the Palm Springs Art Museum. Bob gave us a brief history of the museum and also told us about the museum’s new location in Palm Desert. Located in the former Palm Desert Visitors Center building at El Paseo and Hwy. 111, the local site opened in March and is already enjoying the same level of attendance as the much larger Palm Springs location. The local museum is known as The Galen and occupies 8,500 sf. Plans eventually call for an extensive outdoor sculpture garden at the site. The Palm Springs Art Museum began as a natural history museum in 1938. Over the years, generous area residents have donated artwork to the facility and, in 2005, the name was changed to the Palm Springs Art Museum to reflect the more than 50,000 items the museum now houses. According to Bogard, our local museum’s art collection rivals that of many Los Angeles museums. Also last week, Sojourner Mike Wedekind had a chance at $267 in the Rotary Raffle but only managed to draw a 2 for a $2 win. | | Posted by Jim Brock on Apr 01, 2012 Joy A. Palmer-Cooper was with us last week to talk about Project Sri Lanka. Dr. Palmer-Cooper, a member of the Rotary Club of Alnwick, Northumberland, England, was a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar at Stanford University in 1982-83 and was hosted by Sojourner Ernie Hawks’ Mountain View Rotary Club. Sri Lanka is an island nation off the southeast coast of India. Project Sri Lanka came about after the devastating 2004 tsunami which killed tens of thousands of inhabitants. One of the goals of the project is to rebuild 24 schools. To date, 10 have been rebuilt. The project has recently expanded its work to inland villages which suffer dire poverty. The project uses young volunteers from throughout England who work with Sri Lankan Rotary clubs in the rebuilding effort. A big thank you to Ernie Hawks for arranging this program! Also last week, one of our Canadian visitors was a lucky $9 winner in the Rotary Raffle. This week’s pot will be over $250! Buy tickets and you could have a one in four chance at the big bucks! | | Posted by Jim Brock on Mar 25, 2012 Mitch Gershenfeld, director of presentations for The McCallum Theatre, was our speaker last week. The McCallum will be celebrating its 25th anniversary next year and they’re scheduling some great acts for the coming season to celebrate. Mitch is slated to take over as president and CEO in June when Ted Giatas departs. Giatas came to the McCallum in 1999 when the theatre was mired in debt. He led fundraising efforts which raised $28 million in four years and insured a stable future for the theatre. While next season’s line up won’t be announced until April 11, Mitch did let us know that Steve Martin and his bluegrass band, the Steep Canyon Rangers, has been booked. Last week we also bid adieu to Martin Kubelik, who is returning home to Prague for the summer. Martin promises to update us on his summer and invites all members to contact him if they’re heading his way. We also inducted Paul Parry as the world’s newest Rotarian last week. Paul is an attorney and lives in Palm Desert with wife, Debbie. Suzy Homme won $6 in the Rotary Raffle. | | Posted by Jim Brock on Mar 18, 2012 Dennis Modrich, vice president of the World Affairs Council of the Desert, was our speaker last week. The council hosts speakers discussing national and international topics. Eight events are held each year at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort and $50 covers dinner and the speaker. Yearly membership begins at just $90. Also last week, many P2P Rotarians attended Tennis Night at the BNP Paribas Open and saw American John Isner continue his road to the finals by defeating France’s Gilles Simon in three sets. Thanks to Cal McIntosh for his hard work to make Tennis Night a success. Finally last week, Sojourner Harry Helliesen drew the final face card and took home $20 in the Rotary Mega-Raffle. The pot is nearly $200 so buy tickets this week! | | Posted by Jim Brock on Mar 11, 2012 Moe Sihota, a member of a group of Canadian investors who have purchased Palm Desert Country Club, spoke to our club last week. The newly refurbished country club reopened in January and is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Moe reports that the club is doing extremely well and has enjoyed full tee sheets every day since mid-January. The club focuses on the quality of the playing experience for golfers and believes word of mouth is critical to their continued success. Moe tells us they’ve also done extremely well with the club house which features televised hockey for our Canadian fans. Dana Tarnow reminds Rotarians to complete their club surveys and we’ll be holding a Club Assembly in April to discuss our future. Butch Hartman won $4 in the raffle. | | Posted by Jim Brock on Mar 04, 2012 Robert Hunt, vice president of Well In The Desert, was our speaker last week. The group was founded to help those in need in the western area of the Coachella Valley. The organization provides hot meals, emergency food assistance, weekly food distribution and access to community services to the needy. The group feeds 150-200 people daily and provides food to 100-175 people each Saturday. Support comes from grants and donations. Learn more at www.wellinthedesert.org. Pres.-Elect Dana Tarnow handed out a survey about our club. Please take the time to complete it and help us plan for our future! Louise Oppenheim was a lucky $8 winner in the Rotary Raffle and donated her winnings to Well In The Desert. Thanks, Louise! | | Posted by Jim Brock on Feb 26, 2012 Mark Goulet, general manager of Shields Date Garden, was our speaker last week. Some 95 percent of dates grown in the U.S. are grown right here in our desert making dates our fourth largest agricultural crop. Each year, 44 million pounds of dates are harvested from 12 varieties grown here in the Coachella Valley. According to Mark, dates are extremely labor intensive and require over 100 days of maintenance per year. New nutrition studies show that dates are extremely high in anti-oxidants so consumer demand continues to grow. Visitor Norm Legare of Calgary South Rotary drew a Jack and collected $20 in our Rotary Raffle. Norm donated his winnings back to our club for use in one of our youth projects. Thanks, Norm! | | Posted by Jim Brock on Feb 19, 2012 Author Peter T. Hoss was with us last week to talk about his book, Born In Yosemite. Peter was born in the park in 1934 and grew up there with neighbors like Ansel Adams. He provided members with a unique insight into the park then and now. Also last week, Jerry Kress provided a recap of our club’s successful Choices program at Shadow Hills High School. Over 400 9th graders went through the program and heard from presenters Jerry, Drew Clark, Charles Riggs, Cal McIntosh, Dana Tarnow and Donna-Lee Ekstrom. If the program keeps just a handful of at-risk youth in school then we’ve been successful. We welcomed back Sojourners Ernie Hawks (25 days in the hospital) and Harry Helliesen and Harry picked up $5 in the Rotary Raffle! | | Posted by Jim Brock on Feb 12, 2012 Mark Weber, manager of the Coachella Valley Enterprise Zone, was our speaker last week. Our valley’s Zone is now 20 years old and some 200 employers take advantage of it. Business incentives include an employee hiring credit as well as other benefits. Businesses within the zone that are not taking advantage of it are leaving money on the table, according to Weber. The Zone is a partnership of the cities of Indio and Coachella and the County of Riverside. Also last week, we received a progress report on our Choices program at Shadow Hills High School. We’ll expect a full recap from Chair Jerry Kress this week. Finally, our own Jeff Patterson, after accusing the Raffle Master of removing the Aces from the deck, picked up $3 in our Rotary Raffle. | | Posted by Jim Brock on Feb 05, 2012 Our own Martin Kubelik providedus with an extremely interesting program about Rotary in Europe last week. WhenMartin’s not with us here in thedesert, he divides his time between his home in Prague, his mother’s home inSwitzerland and in Northern Italy. While in Italy, Martin does research and lectures at various universities. Since hejoined our club last spring, Martin hasmaintained perfect Rotary attendance by making up meetings at European clubs.Meetings in Europe are rather formal affairs, according to Martin, with printed menus, excellent speakers and high-end meetinglocations. Great program, Martin! Also last week, Sojourner Mike Wedekinddonated his previous week’s $100 Raffle winnings back to our club. Thanks, Mike! | | Posted by Jim Brock on Jan 29, 2012 Another speaker scheduling snafu left us without a program lastweek but we were saved by our friends from north of the border. Sojourners Mike Wedekind and Ray Roth were joined by four other visiting Canadians and showedthe club how the national anthem is meant to be sung. Of course, the anthem was“O Canada” and the group received a great ovation. One of the visitors alsoshared some fundraising ideas with our club. Foundation Chair Kay Van Zandt honored Rotarian Butch Hartman with his seventh PaulHarris recognition and Butch took ita step further and presented AngieGriego, his longtime assistant, with her own Paul Harris award. Butch also contributed an additional $1,000 to recognize Angie Criego, is longtime assistant, with her own Paul Harris award. Congratulations, Angie and Butch! | | Posted by Jim Brock on Jan 22, 2012 Scheduling confusion left us without a speaker last week soProgram Chair Louise Oppenheim toldus a bit about her profession. Don’t despair, we’ll still get to learn allabout dates since we’ve rescheduled Mark Goulet, manager of Shields DateGarden, for February 22. Also last week, we welcomed Mike Laughlin as our newest Palms To Pines Rotarian. Mike, a former Sojourner fromSpringville, California, has the classification Real Estate Broker. Cal wasawarded a Paul Harris pin with three sapphires. Congratulations, Cal! Martin Kubelik was our lucky $20 winner in the Rotary Raffle. | | Posted by Jim Brock on Jan 15, 2012 Coachella Valley residential properties have lost over 40percent of their value over the past six years according to last week’sspeaker, Greg Berkemer, executive vice president of the California DesertAssociation of Realtors. Last year, Berkemer said, 55 percent of desert saleswere either short sales or bank owned properties. Recovery won’t occur untilregular homes sales predominate again. Banks, Berkemer says, continue to slowlydispose of their foreclosure properties and this “shadow inventory” will delaya recovery until it’s exhausted. Also last week, Palms To Pines welcomed backmember Martin Kubelik. Martin, whose primary home is inPrague, can serve as an example for all of us. Despite being absent from ourclub for the past nine months, Martin maintainedperfect Rotary attendance by making up at a number of clubs. Welcome back, Martin! Richard is a Palm Desert CPAand he told us that it’s too early to identify tax changes for the year sinceour hardworking Congress is involved. Ifyou expect a big tax bite this year (and especially if you could be subject tothe Alternative Minimum Tax) your accountant should prepare mock returns beforethe end of the year. That way, you can make a decision on prepaying propertyand state income taxes, making charitable contributions, delaying a bonus untilJanuary of 2012 and maximizing your contributions to an IRA. People over 50have until April 15 to contribute up to $6,000 to an IRA. We also learned aboutthe advantages of taking required IRA disbursements by donating them directlyto charity. Thanks, Richard! Margaret Claggett was our lucky RotaryRaffle winner and she took home $6 in cold, hard cash! | | Posted by Jim Brock on Aug 22, 2011 Member Jeff Pattersonwas with us last week to talk about Family Services of the Desert. According to Jeff, “giving food preventshomelessness” since food and housing are a family’s two major monthly expenses.Food Now provides food to an estimated 19 percent of Desert Hot Springs’households, Jeff says. Family Servicesalso played a major role in fundraising for the Barbara Sinatra Center atEisenhower Medical Center. Working with Barbara Sinatra, Family Services helpedraise over $200,000 for the center. Also last week, we were told that the clubwould soon begin accepting credit card payments for dues and meals. We’ll havemore details this week! Finally, DougWalker was the lucky $10 Rotary Raffle winner. | | Posted by Jim Brock on Aug 14, 2011 Member Shawna McNeilltold about her business, Desert Cities Stop Smoking & Weight Loss LaserTherapy in Rancho Mirage. Shawnacombines laser therapy and education to help people stop smoking and loseweight. Laser therapy triggers endorphins, natural chemicals in the body associatedwith the spontaneous relief of pain, stress and anxiety, according to Shawna. Learn more about these programsat www.smokefreedesert.com. When Shawna concluded her program, she wasnot finished for the day, however. ButchHartman had the winning Rotary Raffle ticket and he promptly provided it toShawna who then pulled an Ace fromthe deck to win $20. She continued the “pay forward” trend and donated thewinnings to next year’s Back To School Shopping Spree. Congratulations, Shawna! | | Posted by Jim Brock on Aug 07, 2011 With us last week was LillianRoberts, our club veterinarian. Lillianowns Country Club Animal Clinic and she gave us a glimpse of her career. Aveterinarian often sees an animal from birth to death. There have beentremendous advances in veterinary medicine in recent years. Lillian recounted the story of talkingwith a doctor who accompanied a relative and pet into a veterinary emergencyroom. The doctor had volunteered in Somalia and told Lillian her emergency room was equipped with more medical equipmentthan the entire country of Somalia. The most exotic animal Lillian has treated is a zebra. Lillian cautions young people considering a career as aveterinarian. The cost of training does not make economic sense anymore, shesays, and urges people considering a veterinary career to spend time working inclinic before coming to a final decision. Also last week, we honored Margot Serrano who received her fifthPaul Harris Fellow award. Congratulations, Margot!Jeff Patterson calmly pulling an Acefrom the Rotary Raffle deck and walked away with $63. | | Posted by Jim Brock on Aug 01, 2011 Our own Donna-Lee Ekstrom was our speaker lastweek. Donna-Lee, an ISA CertifiedArborist, began her career in a laboratory but her love of golf eventually ledher to a career in golf course-related horticulture. She worked on the VintageClub when it was under construction and now serves as a consulting arborist. She has also served as an expert witness in litigation on a number ofoccasions. As a consulting arborist, she works with HOA staffs on propercultural practices in the care of trees and shrubs. The three biggest problemsshe sees are over trimming, over watering and over fertilizing. One of Donna-Lee’s biggest pet peeves is theover trimming of our desert’s palm trees. Less is always more, she says. Thanks, Donna-Lee, for a greatprogram! Chuck Weisbart is kickingoff a fundraising campaign to collect $1,000 before his upcoming trip toCambodia. The funds will be donated to land mine relief efforts. More from Chuck this week! Jean Dores was a lucky $10 winner in our Rotary Raffle and, for thesecond time in as many weeks, chose to donate her winnings back to the pot. | | Posted by Jim Brock on Jul 25, 2011 Lisa Snow, Business Development Manager of Desert Arc, was ourspeaker last week. Also last week, SuzyHomme donated $100 to the club in recognition of her $63 Rotary Raffle win(we like the math!) and Cal McIntoshwas the lucky winner of $3 in the depleted Rotary Raffle. Cal donated his winnings back to the raffle pot. Thanks, Suzy and Cal! | | Posted by Jim Brock on Jul 18, 2011 Our own Cal McIntoshgave us the ABCs of estate planning last week. Every one of us should havethree important documents, a trust, an advanced healthcare directive and adurable power of attorney for financial matters. A trust is essential to avoidprobable. Probate is time consuming, expensive and complicated, according to Cal. Federal and state estate taxesshould not be an issue for most of us, says Cal, so most trusts are fairly simple these days. The biggestpitfall involving a trust is not putting all assets into the trust. Thanks, Cal, for a VERY informative program! Past Pres. Rob Strain was back fromvacation and he recognized two additional Rotarians for their service duringhis term. Congratulations to MargaretClaggett and Art Fleming! Suzy Homme was back to her winning wayswhen she pulled an Ace and collected $63 in the raffle. | | Posted by Jim Brock on Jul 11, 2011 New Pres.
