Congradulations Nancy & Bill. | | Posted by Jimmy Hutto on May 14, 2012 Rob Henneke introduce Scott Keller Scott Keller was the speaker this week. Scott is an attorney in Austin Texas and went to law school with Rob Henneke. Early in his career he spent time as a Supreme Court Clerk for Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy. He spoke to the group about his time there. Clerks for the Supreme Court only serve one year terms. We all took away a bit more understanding of about how the Supreme Court Justice's and clerks do their jobs. http://www.avvo.com/attorneys/78701-tx-scott-keller-1772106.html | | Posted by Ingrid Painter on May 14, 2012
Bob McCullough, Sr. Vice President of Manufacturing for HEB was introduced by David Rittenhouse. Mr. McCullough has worked for H-E-B for the past 20 years. Previously, he spent 8 years with PepsiCo in manufacturing operations with Frito Lay (making snack foods). 5 years with Proctor and Gamble in manufacturing operations. Mr. McCullough spent 5 years in the US Army serving in the Field Artillery after attending Airborne and Ranger schools. Mr. McCullough received a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from West Point and a Masters in Finance. He also attended the Harvard Advanced Management Program in 2000.
He is currently accountable for the Manufacturing Division of H-E-B, comprised of 12 Plants and 2 Distribution Centers with a cumulative number of 2,200 partners. Altogether, these plants produce over $1B in annual sales and provide tremendous profit to H-E-B.
H-E-B owns 30 "H-E-B Plus" stores. The company operates in Texas and Mexico. According to Mr. McCullough, H-E-B is the lowest price retailer in the US. The long and stubborn recession makes it more difficult to operate under these conditions. In Texas, 23% of our children are below poverty level and the average household income is $2,000-$2,400 and going down. Our population growth is hispanic driven - our Anglo Americans are getting older and Latinos younger. Because of the change in demographics, the company has to zero in on value and quality, i.e. private label sales which are up substantially. The price of gasoline impacts the business. Consumers want the best quality and expect lower prices. Therefore, H-E-B must reduce their cost at every level. The stores are now offering local fresh produce. Their own brand "Mootopia" offers healthy and lactose tolerant milk products. Sales of their special brands, i.e. H-E-B Creamy Strawberry Ice Cream, Tres Leches Cakes, French Toast etc., have doubled over the last 6 months. The company's primary focus is on the customer and low prices. | | Posted by Ingrid Painter on May 06, 2012 Our new member Justin Hammack was introduced by Jimmy Hutto. Peace. ―I believe mankind is now on a new brink, not the brink of war but the brink of peace. … Now is the time for our generation to build from the multitude of conflicting desire and persistent national and economic rivalries a new relationship among peoples, one that frees the energies of nations and their people for the constructive endeavors that will create a better life for all.‖ — 1977-78 RI President W. Jack Davis Clean water. Rotarians put 1,250 biosand filters into homes in the Dominican Republic through a US$150,000 project supported by a Rotary Foundation Matching Grant. This undertaking was part of the Children‘s Safe Water Alliance, a project of District 4060 that helped bring 19,000 filters — and clean water — to 100,000 people in 300 communities in just seven years. The alliance was the brainchild of Bob Hildreth, past president of the Rotary Club of Puerto Plata Isabel de Torres, Dominican Republic, and past club president James Bodenner and his wife, Susan, both members of the Rotary Club of Rockford, Michigan, USA. Water and sanitation. Every day, 5,000 children under age five die from unsafe water and poor sanitation and hygiene. Past RI President William B. Boyd says: ―It is true that water is life, and it is also sadly true that too many people have no access to clean, safe, drinkable water. Rotary has the expertise and the worldwide membership to save lives by providing potable water on a large scale.‖ Matching Grants. Your contribution to the Annual Programs Fund can literally be the bridge to a better life for people in need. In El Salvador, a US$17,600 Matching Grant project built three bridges that improved the lives of approximately 2,500 people. The bridges increased agricultural trade, economic growth, and access to health care and education. An unexpected benefit of the project: During excavation for one of the bridges, a high-quality water source was discovered which residents can now access — by crossing the bridge. *May does not have an official observance on the Rotary calendar. This month’s Foundation Thoughts focus on water and sanitation. | | Posted by David A. Martin on Apr 30, 2012 Great Progress is being made on the eradication of polio from the face of the earth. So far this year there are only 47 new cases of polio in the world and almost half of those cases (23) are in Nigeria. At this time in 2011 there were 103 new cases of polio in the world. The results of all of the public health community hard work is paying off. The Rotary Foundation leads the way. Please keep your contributions coming. These last few areas where polio continues to survive are remote and very difficult. We must keep up the effort until the world is polio free for several years. Thank you for your support. Jeff Wendling introduced Ray Garcia, the director of the Environmental Health Department for Kerr County since 2007. Ray served twenty years in the military, and after tours in Iran, Kosovo and Afghanistan, he retired. There are two deputies that serve under Ray, and their duties send them into a variety of situations in the field. The mission of the department is to provide for the health, safety and welfare of the citizens of Kerr County. Some of the situations investigated include illegal dumping, illegal burning, illegal solid waste, nuisance waste and illegal sewage waste systems.
Each officer responds to over 500 cases per year, so the magnitude of potential violations is staggering. Many violators are repeat offenders and have criminal backgrounds. In one case, a person illegally dumped construction trash on the side of a road, but unfortunately for him, left a receipt with his name on it in the trash heap. Busted.
Most offenders are given 30 days to clean up or rectify their violation and the charges may be dropped. If they do not comply, then it becomes more serious and can result in misdemeanor or felony charges. The Texas Water Code, which protects the quality of our water in the State, has some of the harshest penalties for violations, with up to $1,000,000.00 per day for the most serious offenses. | | Posted by Karen Quanstrom New members Sharon Jones and Robin Meiars were introduced by their sponsoring members Sherri Jones and Tammy Prout respectively. Welcome Sharon and Robin.

By Bill Muldoon Group Study Exchange Teams (GSE) from abroad have been to Kerrville in past years, but this is a first-time visit from District 7030 in the Caribbean. District 7030 consists of 14 to 17 island-nations (depending on who’s counting), one of which is much smaller than Kerrville and a few with populations of less than 50,000. Two islands, Martinique and Trinidad and Tobago, have the lion’s share of Rotary clubs in the district. Technically, Martinique is not a nation at all but a department (similar to a state) of France. Also, Trinidad and Tobago (pronounced To-BAY-go) are two islands but one nation. The GSE Team leader is a Trinidadian. Team members hail from St. Kitts/Nevis, Antigua, and St. Lucia. The team will arrive from San Angelo on Monday, May 21 and go to Fredericksburg on Wednesday. They will give a presentation to the Rotary club on Wednesday at noon. GSE presentations often inform the audience about their home and their culture, as well as their impressions of their host district. GSE is part of The Rotary Foundation (TRF) and is a cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for non-Rotarian business and professional persons, under the guidance of an experienced Rotarian team leader. Our District 5840 will reciprocate by sending a GSE team to the Caribbean district. GSE visits last between four and six weeks. They will make numerous club presentations, attend social events and Participate in our District Conference in San Marcos. | | Posted by Sherri Jones on Apr 16, 2012
