Chad W. Bissonnette's talk will focus on community-driven development and the crucial role it plays in ensuring global development/charitable efforts are sustainable and respectful. I will present the work of Roots of Development as an example of an alternative approach to doing development that is founded on building independence as opposed to dependency, and the role of the donor in expanding such an approach.

Great success - Love Shouldn’t Hurt with Safe Horizon and Miss America
On Weds, Aug 20 members of the Rotary Club joined friends of Safe Horizon and Miss America to create awareness for domestic abuse while enjoying wonderful camaraderie and networking at Hair of the Dog on Orchard Street (Lower East Side).

Wall Street Journal Editorial Board Member
Jason Riley is a member of The Wall Street Journal Editorial Board. He joined the paper in 1994 as a copyreader on the national news desk in New York. He moved to the editorial page in 1995 as copyreader and later became a copy editor. In April 1996, he was named to the newly created position of editorial interactive editor and maintained the editorial and Leisure & Arts section of WSJ.com. He was named a senior editorial page writer in March 2000, and member of the Editorial Board in 2005.
Born in Buffalo, NY, Mr. Riley earned a bachelor's degree in English from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He has also worked for USA Today and the Buffalo News.

The Heart of Art with Elisa Brown on PBS - Sep 28
Come watch the taping of Episode Three of The Heart of Art with Elisa Brown, wife of Jan Brown, which will focus on the art and artistry of playwright Catherine Filloux, an award-wining French-American playwright and opera librettist who has been writing about human rights and social justice for over 20 years. The taping will be Sep 28th at the Abingdon Theatre at 8 pm as part of the Abingdon's Sunday Series.

Registration Now Open
PP/PDG Helen Reisler, RI Alt Rep to the UN, announces the opening of registration for the 2014 Rotary/UN Day on November 1st. Helen, a 26 year member, Past President (2001) and Trustee, of the Rotary Club of New York has been an active participant in the planning, coordination, and strategy of this annual International event for eight years. She was appointed to this position by eight consecutive Rotary International Presidents.
1300 Rotarians, Rotaracters, Interacters, UN dignitaries, and guests are expected to attend. Afternoon breakouts were a new addition last year, where Helen moderated "Peace & Conflict Resolution." This year she'll moderate " New Generations." She believes both topics are closely related.

Locust Valley RC Learns about Fistula
Recently, RCNY member Louisa C. Boyle spoke at the Locust Valley Rotary Club about her charity – The Freedom from Fistula Foundation, of which she is Development Director. She shared about her time living and working in Kenya and Malawi with amazing women suffering from obstetric fistula ,a childbirth related condition. and explained how lack of dignity from a condition like obstetric fistula can ruin a woman’s life and completely kill her dignity and hope.
