Memorial Day: In Death, Life
By Trent Adams
Looks like summer’s come a little early this year, since turn of the calendar puts the last Monday in May a little back from the end of the month. Beginning of summer: beginning of life? Any school kid would tell you as much.
It’s the usual thing: an annual event of remembrance is upon us, coming too fast, and the risk is that another long weekend, another barbecue, and its Tuesday morning work day and there was little even about the weekend that was remembered. Of course, that’s only for those of us who don’t know the pain, a posteriori, of losing a loved one to war. Arguably it is we who need to be more observant of Memorial Day. And it is as important as ever to remember those who have given the ultimate gift to us. Our culture is increasingly beset by meaninglessness—mindless entertainment, a constant flow of emails, tweets, blog posts, video, little of which ever sinks in (often a good thing, perhaps). As FCC Chair Newton Minnow said way back in 1961, TV (and today most mass media) is still a “vast wasteland.” How can we find meaning amidst meaninglessness? By reflecting and remembering.
For in remembering their death, it keeps them alive, and keeps alive the hope for reunion one Great Day in the Morning. In death, there is life.
Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13
We shall remember.

Ruben Matthew Rodrihuez from Whittier, California felt compelled to thank Rotary for his recent experience at RYLA youth camp in the Idyllwild Mountains. However, he had a hard time coming up with the right words. So he wrote and performed this 'Thank you rap!' Here is a sample of his lyrical creation:
