People do not decide one day to behave unethically. Misconduct often begins with an organization’s cultural undertones that allow shortcuts and smaller offenses that, when ignored, metastasize into a larger pattern of misconduct. This presentation will focus on how proper selection of employees and initial training, daily supervision, and mission clarity can be integrated to create an agency that is built using good character as its cornerstone.

Our weekly meeting was called to order by President John Guthmann at the DoubleTree Hotel downtown Saint Paul. David Laird led members in singing America the Beautiful. Compliments to all for the acapella performance. Bob Cardinal delivered the invocation. Roger Nielsen welcomed and introduced visiting Rotarians and guests.

A member of The Rotary Club of Rochester since 1998, District Governor Karel Weigel served as Treasurer in 2006-2007 and as President in 2010-2011. District activities include service on the District Governor Nominating Committee and on-site coordinator for North Central Presidents-Elect Training Seminar (NC PETS). Rotary is a special part of Karel’s life and she is proud to represent Rotary in our communities and in our world. Service Above Self may be a short motto, but it speaks volumes in humanitarian impact.

David Tentis, head golf pro at Troy Burne Golf Club in Hudson, Wisc., Tentis has been the head golf pro at Troy Burne since 2005. Previously he was the business manager and golf course architect at Tanners Brook Golf Club in Forest Lake, director of golf and project manager at Mississippi Dunes Golf Links in Cottage Grove, and a professional golfer on the PGA TOUR (1989 – 1990), Canadian Tour and Australian Tour.

The Rotary Clubs of Paris France and St. Paul, Minnesota, USA have formed an agreement to promote inter-country masters level internships. Each club has committed to working with its local business community to find internship positions for individuals from the other country who have completed or are well into a master level program.

More than a hundred Saint Paul community leaders from private businesses, non-profit organizations, and government agencies came together May 13 to explore the question “Does America have a values crisis?” Community leaders participating in the workshop shared ideas and opinions on a wide range of ethical topics through electronic polling.

President Jim Kosmo will present a "Mark Weber Service Above Self Award" each month to a member who has demonstrated exemplary volunteer service. The award is named for Lt. Col. Mark Weber who died of cancer in June.

The Rotary International Convention just concluded. During Friday's world record-breaking Sydney Harbour bridge climb, Rotary members raised enough money to protect 240,000 kids from polio.

St. Paul Rotary with support from AAA is re-publishing the St. Paul Walking Tour Guide. St. Paul Rotary created the guide in 2008 and it was so popular that it needs a second publication. The guide is available at several locations in downtown St. Paul.

In recognition of the 100th Anniversary of the Rotary Club of Saint Paul in 2010 an endowment fund was created to finance the Second Century Scholarship Fund well into the future. Each year one student will receive a $5,000 scholarship that can be renewed three times for a total award of $20,000.

In 1974 the Rotary Club of Saint Paul and the Rotary Club of Nagasaki joined in a sister club relationship. In 1981 Saint Paul Rotary presented the Rotary Club of Nagasaki a totem pole to commemorate the relationship between the two clubs. It was prominently displayed in their city’s Peace Park but after many years it deteriorated.
