Dear Fellow Rotarians,

In case you couldn’t attend this morning’s meeting I wantedto make you aware of something we’re doing “for one of our own” and invite youto be part of it. Today’s presentation was by The American Cancer Society whotold us about the upcoming “Relay For Life” on May 10-11. In this relay teamsof people will walk around the Kenston track non-stop for 18 hours to raisemoney and awareness for the fight against cancer. So many of us have beentouched by the disease we could all probably walk for someone we know, howeveras many of you are aware our very own Linda Hein is currently waging her battlewith the disease. Knowing this, a number of us decided to put together a teamof Chagrin Valley Rotarians and walk for her. Unless you’re brand new to theclub I don’t need to tell you how much Linda means to us and what an honor itwill be to do this for her. And if you are brand new believe me, you’ll neverfind a more positive, friendly, helpful, and fun person than Linda.

If you haven’t signed up already I hope you will nextTuesday and join me and the other Rotarians to make this team the biggest, mostfun bunch of people on the track! And to MAKE SURE this is the best, most funexperience possible we’ve recruited none other than

Martine Scheuermann to be our Team Captain!!! Martinecouldn’t be there this morning because she’s on a West Coast business trip butbelieve me she’s going to give it the “Martine touch” so you won’t want to missit. Thanks all in advance, and I look forward to a memorable experience May10-11.

And Linda, a collective hug goes to you. Our motto is; “wego round and round for you.”

Jim Kamer introduced the area Senior Vice President from Gallagher Benefits Services, Chris Herbruck, who spoke on the future effects of the Patient Protective & Affordable Care Act (PPACA ... Obama Care). He painted a bleak picture of ever increasing insurance costs to employers and employees; penalties on employers for both following and not following the act's requirements; penalties on individuals for not getting coverage; and the future loss of employer provided health benefits for many employees, whose present health coverage can be "managed" out of existence by mak- ing them 29 hour a week employees who need not be offered health benefits under the act.

Chagrin Falls resident Lisa Buescher discussed the Adoption Network last Tuesday.
An adoptee herself, Lisa became involved with the nonprofit group after the birth of
her first child ten years ago.

Started in 1988 by Betsy Norris, the Adoption Network supports all who are touched
by adoption - adoptees, birthparents, adoptive parents, prospective adoptive parents,
foster youth and alumni, foster parents and professionals - throughout their journey.
The group has a staff of 16 and over 200 volunteers who give over 3,500 hours a year.
They figure they touch 60% of the population.

Dale Arvay introduced Frank Ondus, the Vice President of Community Wellness forJudson and South Franklin Circle. He spoke to us about how appropriate exercise can staveoff the debilitating effects of dementia, particularly of Alzheimer's. It is reported that by 2009 26.6 millionpeople had been diagnosed with active Alzheimers world-wide. By 2050 that number willjump to 110 million. "Dementia" defines many types of neuro-plastic conditions butAlzheimer's remains the most prevalent type of dementia.

Clover Electric and now their 26 year old son is a partner in that business.  Clover Electric

The CVRC’s 9-9-9 plan: Joe Talty, chairperson of the club’s holiday basket program, announced his own 9-9-9 plan. With the economy still struggling to find its way, many families are in need and the Geauga County Food Bank needs donations. Joe is asking Rotarians to donate 9 canned goods and $99 to aid the Food Bank and to help with this year’s holiday food baskets. Annually the club raises funds to purchase food baskets from Heinen’s to give to the most needy in our area the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and Christmas. Joe will be passing the “basket” the next couple of weeks. Please be generous. If you have questions, please contact Joe.

At the meeting last week Mark Besand and I were not able to show you a video that Levi's put together about Katie's ride. The moment about half-way through where the doctor asks, "...and you're racing with this injury?" is priceless. Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/user/Shapewhatstocome

Happy Fourth!PS In the video there is a link for donations. It is wrong. It should read http://www.crowdrise.com/ride4water (in the video the ".com" is missing).

Michael "Brody" Leon is the Chagrin Valley Rotary CAP Awardee this year. This award goes approximately annually to a non-Rotarian who demonstrates the "service above self" motto of Rotary. Brody, a 2011 Kenston High School graduate, is unusual in capturing this award this year. Previous winners have been much older adults with years of community and professional experience. The selection of Brody reflects the tremendous service he has given to the community even as a student. We are so fortunate to have him as part of our community and wish him the best of luck in Colorado.
