On May 12th, the Lancaster Sunrise Club held its ninth annual Ride for Literacy. Close to 90 riders participated....It was an all out effort by club members to mark the roads, prepare and serve the food, man the water stops, print brochures and plan the successful event.  Thank you to all who participated.  Proceeds from this fundraiser  help to support the club's bi-annual eye mission to Ethiopia and the Literacy Council of Lancaster-Lebanon.  Approximately 850 cataract surgeries have been completed during our eye missions over the past ten years.  The Literacy Council of Lancaster-Lebanon exists to promote literacy and help adults improve their basic reading, writing, math and English communication skills.  The club's donations from past bike rides have purchased text books and supplies for the Literacy Council.

The Lancaster Sunrise Club won the “2011-2012 Best Medium Size Club Award in District 7390”.  I had the honor of accepting the banner for all our members at the District Conference in Williamsburg, on March 31, 2012. This is the fifth consecutive year the Lancaster Sunrise Club received this award.  We were recognized because our team work and efforts touched all the Avenues of Service.  Our achievements were far ranging and included local community projects, international service, promoting youth involvement, and improving literacy.  What makes our club special is that we accomplished all this while maintaining our high ethical standards and strengthening our club fellowship.

I am proud to be your President!

On March 18th, the Lancaster Sunrise Rotary Club completed its fifth successful eye mission to Ethiopia.  Members Bill Cluley, Getachew Hirpo and Jim Kulp joined Dr. Albert Alley and his team from World Blindness Outreach on this ten day mission to the capital Addis Ababa.  Medical supplies worth $6000 were donated to the mission with a District Simplified Grant and the cooperation of the Rotary Club of Lancaster-Penn Square.

Working with the staff at the Ras Desta Hospital Eye Clinic, 128 cataract surgeries were performed, bringing eye sight to those that had been blind.  Ongoing relationships with the Ethiopian health professionals were renewed, and expertise passed on so that they could continue the work we began.  Any unused medicines were left for their use.

Ethiopia is a country with a high incidence of blindness, 10 times that of the United States.  Eighty percent of the blind could be spared if they had access to treatment.  Cataracts account for 50% of these cases with about 600,000 people suffering with the disease.

The international cooperation among so many groups to provide sight to the blind and to offer a better future for the Ethiopians is the heart of any Rotary mission.  It exemplifies the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self.”  This is one of the best examples of how Rotary bridges boundaries and cultural differences to forge humanitarian bonds of friendship and service.

The January Sub Sale has become a Lancaster Sunrise Rotary tradition. On  Saturday in January 28, 2012  the early rising Rotarians will gathere to start assembling 200 American subs. Last year,  with the help of Stauffers of Kissell Hill and some food vendors Sunrise Rotary netted over $660.Contact Henry Hershey to volunteer for a time slot.

Thanks to Henry Hershey for organizing the great event and to all Rotarians that lent a hand to sell the Subs!  This fun and easy event has the proceeds going to benefit our Ethiopian Eye Mission. Editors note: I am not sure what is more fun, making the subs or observing the sales techniques of Getachew as he strong arms the shoppers into buying some subs!

Reading has begun at Carter & MacRae Elementary on Prince St at 1:00 pm! We are looking for volunteers to read with the 4th graders for 45 min each Thursday from 1 pm to 1:45 pm. It is a very rewarding experience for all. If you are able to volunteer for this week or the weeks listed below please let us know. Lancaster Sunrise Rotary is committed to improving literacy in Lancaster and this is one way you can help. The best way to enter is from the back. Come in on S Prince St go around the block on the street just past the school (the school will be on your left). Turn left on Conestoga and then another left on Queen St. Then make a left into the Save Alot parking lot and park as close to the school as you can. There are some reserved spaces for teachers so you need to make sure you do not park there.

You then enter at the back door. There is a buzzer at the door to the right. You will see a table down the hall with a monitor and a sign in book for volunteers. You are going to Mrs. Corrigan's 4th grade class on the second floor room 209. The monitor can show you the way.

When you get to Mrs. Corrigan's class she will assign a student to you and the student will take you to the library.

It is much easier than it sounds! to volunteer contact Lynn Fitzsimons at lynn@wdgbt.com or Missy Walton at missyw@redroseawards.com

Wesley Taylor, the LCC Banquet Manager & Event Coordinator, has suggested to the club that we change our present meeting cancellation policy because of inclement weather.  His reason is that his staff needs to be at the LCC very early in preparation for our meetings.  Canceling our Rotary meeting that morning is too late for them because they arrive before 6am. The MT School District can announce a 2 hour delay at 6 a. m. and then cancel classes for the day at 7am.  An decision by us needs to be made earlier.

From now on the club presidentI will check the forecast on Wednesday evening.  If the prediction is for a major overnight accumulation (3 or more inches) or icy conditions in the morning, they will send an e-mail to all members at 8 pm on Wednesday, canceling the next morning's meeting.   This procedure will hold true for board meetings.

The Lancaster Sunrise Club will soon make another $1,500 donation to end polio. This money is raised through our club fundraising, 50/50 donations  and the "cash bear" that sits on the table as we enter the meeting. Thanks for helping Rotary fight Polio!!! For more information read below:

Your contribution will help Rotary raise US$200 million to match $355 million in challenge grants received from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The resulting $555 million supports immunization campaigns in developing countries where polio continues to infect and paralyze children, robbing them of their futures and compounding the hardships faced by their families.

As long as polio threatens even one child anywhere in the world, children everywhere remain at risk. The stakes are that high. By donating now, you can help Rotary achieve a polio-free world.

On Monday August 30, Lancaster Sunrise was recognized by Dr. Alley for the outstanding work our club has done in teaming up with him to give sight to those in need in Ethiopia. President Cathy Trissel thanked our club by stating "I Just got home from the World Blindness Outreach Banquet and I felt the need to share. Our club was recognized for the support we have provided for the Ethiopian Eye Missions!  You all should be very proud of the work that is done (with our help!) to provide sight to those who would otherwise remain blind. It was very touching to see those whose lives have been so radically improved. Those people who can now see their families again...

I also wanted to say thank you to all of those in our club who have gone to
Ethiopia and provided that immediate care & support and to the rest of the club
who continue to support the trips through donations of time, money, hard
work and caring thoughts. Lancaster Sunrise touches so many!

On April 1st, 2010, Congressman Joe Pitts was at our Rotary Club to recognize Ralph " Buzz " Coho. Buzz was presented with two USA Flags. One for him to treasure and one that will fly at the flagpole at the new Manheim Twp Library. Congratulations again, Buzz, and thanks for your valued years of service!!
Posted by James Martin

The following is an Article from the Lancaster Newspaper: To be honest, Ralph Coho is a little embarrassed by all the attention.

"Buzz," as Coho is known to his friends, has led a life of quiet service.

Headheres to the "service above self" tenets of Rotary International, anorganization he joined in 1934 and remains active in today.

Now, three local Rotary chapters will honor Coho,of Willow Valley Lakes, with a flagpole installed in his name atManheim Township Public Library, which is scheduled to open in Octoberin Overlook Park.

"That would be a good place to hang me in effigy," said Coho, 95, with a quick laugh.

"Idon't feel that I've done anything to deserve it," he added quietly."I've gained so much more by being active in Rotary. I look for alesson every day in what I do."

Cohosaid he tries to follow Rotary's "4-Way Test" in all aspects of hislife. The test, he said, asks if an action or statement is truthful, fair to all parties concerned, beneficial to all parties concerned andlikely to build goodwill and better friendships. If a decision cannotbenefit everyone, he said, then it should at least benefit thecommunity at large.

"I try to be a good citizen, and to be readyto help others," he said. "It's about the fellowship among people. Ifyou see a problem, you help them find a solution."

Please sell your supply of car wash tickets.  The Cloister Car Wash Ticket sale is one of the main fund raisers for our club and allows us to do the many projects that we perform for the community and our outreach to the world.  I will need your money and unsold tickets by December 2.  Let's keep the unsold tickets to a minimum this year.  Remember Christmas is just around the corner and the tickets make great stocking stuffers. Thanks for your support. Glenn Walz

Good Morning Fellow Sunrise Rotarians and All,

We had the most beautiful day on September 25th, 2008 for the dedication of the pavilion at Overlook park. It was a little cool and took a few of us by surprise at how cool after sitting for a little while in the morning breeze. But the sun was shining bright, almost a bright as the smiles I could see on those who attended.

On April 10th Bill Cluley, Getachew Hirpo and Salena Mann from the Lancaster Sunrise Rotary Club joined Dr. Albert Alley and his team from World Blindness Outreach on a journey of service and discovery.  This was the start of the third mission trip in six years sponsored by our Rotary Club.  We followed in the footsteps of other members of our club who traveled to Addis Ababa on the previous two trips, making friends and affecting the lives of many people.  This mission was made possible by the cooperation of the Lancaster Sunrise Club, Rotary International, the Rotary Club of Finot -Addis Ababa, and the organizational expertise of World Blindness Outreach.

All, I've just learned the District Grants Committee headed by Dr. John Judson approved our final project report at their Nov. 8 meeting. John expects to get the checks for matching funds out to our three clubs this week. Please inform your clubs. Each club will receive a check for about $990 - half of the amount each club contributed in support of the project.

This joint project spanned about twenty-one months - from Larry Gagnon's early vision (in the winter of 2009) and DSG application preparation (spring of 2009) to the final report submitted at the beginning of this month. The joint committee first meet in the fall of 2009. We held a banquet for Buzz Feb. 6 following a severe blizzard, and most who registered still showed. Sadly, Larry passed away last May, never to see the completion of his vision. The fantastic new library was completed on-time in September, and the grand opening occurred Oct. 16. Our very visible flagpole and plaque look terrific right in front.
