Posted by Rex Manson on May 17, 2012 Thank You Beth for your presentation on Strokes today. Concerning the signs and symptoms of this debilitating and often fatal affliction the Stroke Center at Cabrillo College has dedicated itself to the rehabilitation of stoke victims for over 30 years. Whether Vascular, A TIA or Clot the neurological catastrophe that follows an event are unmistakable, and often unreparable. Rehabilitation is an Emergency treatment that proves most effective the sooner it is initiated. Lest we ever forgot the signs thanks Beth for keeping us aware and up to date as to stroke Rehabilitation.

Posted by Rex Manson on Apr 05, 2012 An excellant presentation was made today from the SC Sentinals staff photographer and ongoing Instructor of PhotoJournalism at Cabrillo College. Thru a montage of categories Mr. Thayler took us on a "images" journey thru sports, local and political events and special issues like floods, fires, accidents and natural disasters that he has captured in pictures over the past 25 years. Every picture, explained Mr. Thaler, tells a story of a fraction of a second captured forever without requiring words or explanation. Mr Thayler's rules of good photography: Being in the right place at the right time, being able to recognize frame, cull, crop and edit for effect, no written word required and having the right equipment and the experience and knowledge to use it for evocative effect. No Photoshop. No "FauxTography". Well done and appreciated by our Rotarians Mr. Thaler. Thanks for agreeing to return again for an update next year on your fantastic artful and esoteric work.

Posted by Rex Manson on Mar 22, 2012 The Interactor clubs and officers from Both Aptos High and Soquel High came to lunch today to take over Rotary. Acting on Behalf of President Keith they called the meeting to order, Stood for the Pledge sang the Welcome Song and acted as Detectives fining members deficient in their knowledge of current InterAct fundraising events. They did an excellant job and we were more proud than ever to have these fine young people and the RYLA Leaders of tomorrow visit our meeting.

Posted by Rex Manson on Mar 15, 2012 Today we were addressed by the Exe. Dir of a Center that teaches, trains and arranges for Local home Caregivers. John explained how his group worked with other groups to address the mainly physical and financial needs of the elderly and ageing mentally challenged. He also discussed the tremendous psychological and physiological degradation that accompanies the lonely trek of the selfless, and oft stressed anxiety, of the unprepared caregiver. Needless to say the room of graying Rotarians, those experienced as caregivers and those not as yet exposed to this sacrifice, was strangely muted by the information and complexity of the subject matter.

Posted by Rex Manson on Mar 01, 2012 Dr Kaupp gave us a visit today to relate his story as a start up entrepeneur, MBA and assumably rich Instructor at Cabrillo College. Heading up the Business communications department for the past 6 years he is tenured and therefore "able" to relate to problems with issues like "Facilitation of Change in an entrenched Institutional static Environment vrs the Fast Paced always late 24/7 mutable pace of a Silicon Valley Startup", including the early days of Apple Computer. Very funny, insightful and enlightening when presented the Compare and Contrast. Thanks Dr. Ray we appreciated your entertaining if somewhat sardonic viewpoint. Favorite quote of the day attributed to Steve Jobs: " Who hired that Idiot?"
Posted by Rex Manson on Feb 02, 2012 The Pulitzer prize winning local talent, journalist, teacher and International Musician came to visit CAP Today. Brad moved here from New York an epoch ago to work for the SJ Mercury news where he wrote for 22 years and won a coveted Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. More recently he hosted the afternoon "What's Left" radio talk show on KSCO while teaching Jounalism and photography at Cabrillo College and taking over the Editorship of the E-news website the "Santa Cruz Patch". A lively funny and talented speaker the room was rocking in response to many of Kava's stories and Quips. Well done Mr. Kava you get invited back.
Posted by Rex Manson on Feb 16, 2012 Today we heard an angel, Cory Ybarra from Building for Generations speak about " Supporting Special Needs Education Projects" Worldwide. With her own son a special needs student Cory took it upon herself to start an international 501c3 to support the needy in Peru and Africa. Since 1995 with only small donations from rummage/garage sales and cake bakes she began a program in Tanzania to house and educate the Lesser of the Least: the disabled and rejected special needs children. She has since traveled to Africa, and became enchanted with the African culture. She came today to inform us not to ask us how we can help. Without a cooperative AV projector for support she simply spoke extemporaneously about her challenges. There was no sense of complaint or entitlement in her voice just a passionate committment to help and assist her children that permeated a silenced room of Rotarians. Thank you Cory. We were listening and we will help where we can.
Posted by Rex Manson on Feb 17, 2012 An excellant presentation by a return speaker today and member of Sunrise Rotary Mr. Brian Liddicoat. Trains of the Santa Cruz mountains gave a historical perspective on the progress west of the great Train Barons of the 1800's. With a flourishing Logging industry quickly developing around the Felton Area a means of getting Lumber to market resulted in the building a of transportation from Santa Cruz to Los Gatos and San Francisco. Although the terrain above Lexington was challenging the lines were constructed at great cost and required the digging of the longest Tunnel in the west (some 5200 feet in length) above Scott's valley. Plagued by earthquakes and flooding the lines were sealed in 1942 but some decayed remains can still be seen and viewed. Excellant presentation by Brian and his efforts were well appreciated by the CAP Rotarians!
Posted by Rex Manson on Feb 02, 2012 An excellant presentation today by the" Rich Pig", Caleb Lawrence. A local financial advisor and radio show host on KPIG he has lived in the area for many years. He spoke about the 2007 Banking and financial collapse, The credit collapse that has resulted in the Banking and Mortgage fiasco's that have devoured AIG, Lehman Bros ,IMM and the IMF, caused 7Trillion$ in Pension losses, and resulted in a lack of credit and the collapse of institutional banks worldwide. A provocative fact filled history of gross malfeasence and the case was made implicating the Banks. FTC, IMF and Federal Reserve and a lack of Government leadership over the past 30 years. Many questions were taken from the audience and Mr Rich Pig agreed to come back for an encore update later in 2012.

Posted by Rex Manson On this Fourth of July 2011 At 7 am the east Pacific rising sun was visible unimpeded without our usual July (gasp) Sacred June gloom Fog.. then it held.. thru the morning , until after the Fabulous "Best ever( KSBW) attended" Aptos " Shortest Parade in the World"which ended by 11 am and we .. still had sun.. Glory! The CAP Rotary got very very Lucky. The day started off warm and clear for the first time this writer can remember in 10 years? Earlier, over a BA hosted Lions Breakfast shared with John the Grey Elder and Jimmy Pancakes Kootch the sun rose warmer and bright while below our station down in the Nisene Park, aka Strawberry fields, Tim and his intrepid , tho shorthanded, set up crew ( Al Nighter and the Eric of Beer) , made sure the barbecues were ready, the Beer was chilled and taste tested for freshness (to protect the Public) the positions manned and awaiting the inevitable heathen post parade onslaught.. And then they came... By the thousands! Needing to be age verified, harrassed and carded, needing sustenance from our worthy crew of blaze flaming volunteers, requiring chips and basic foamy liquid reinforcement that only we brave Rotarian volunteers were( licensed) to provide..And Provide we did! For Hours Karen the Fair, of the Agile Lightening fast CPA mind, like Watson, pondered the hundreds of possible mathematical combinations of required cash to make change for drinks between 5 and 6 dollars..(ok there were three ,without one's) . Meanwhile Rex and a worthy band of capricious WristBander's ( including Pam, Kelly and Sandra) sometimes checked ID's and otherwise harrassed the mid life multitudes into interminable DMV like lines for wrinkle "Certification", then passed them on to drawn adult beverages with Craig and Genes Wright ,then over to food with Pancakes Kootch.... But all went well! We did it once again! We actually, thanks to Susy , got $$$Tips! So Congrats ( those of you that showed up) Capitola Aptos Rotarians! We put up a great show and they ( John Q Unwashed Public) showed up Thirsty, tatooed and hungry again.. the Music was great , the sun was brilliant, Aptosian and Del Martian people danced and had a great Day and no hassles seemed to emerge.( good thing because I never saw Security).. ( At least by the time this lazy SOB.. er.. Writer.. left at 3:40 before cleanup, (but during the pre emptive Last Set) due to the fact he had lost all feeling once again in his left leg and lower back...) Other than THAT loyal CAP Rotarians: Another Great, profitable and Noble Community fundraising service was once again conducted with professional aplomb for the many local non profits we support thru our volunteerism! Great Job CAP!
Posted by Rex Manson on Jul 01, 2011 Today our old friend and fellow Rotarian Dr Brian King spoke about What's up" at Cabrillo College .Currently Serving almost 15,000 enrolled students, and consistant in it's almost 50 year history, the college strives to address the needs of a diverse population with some times divergent needs, vocations and political views. The College was recently named one of the best in both California and the entire US. Many of the faculty members teach both at the JC and also up "on the hill "at UCSC. Cabrillo is now considered an invaluable local educational asset and iconic resource by the mid County population. When polled the majority of CAP Rotarians have attended classes or seminars at the College themselves. The goals of the college continues to include excellence in all it's many departments with an excellant record of promoting students farther into Upper graduate education.. Thanks Dr. King for your presentation today. We are here, you can always call on us, and we Rotarians "want to help.
Posted by Rex Manson on Jun 23, 2011 Last night we dethroned, er, Debunked 201o-1 President Kelly ( Beowulf) Nesheim. Held at the SC yacht Club, hosted by the fire breathing Rev. Stan the Abraham Man and decorated by the artistry of Lori M, we all drank danced, pranced and laughed our way thru goodbye dirgey songs of tribute ( running Bear) from the Never silent Sammy Nigh and his two piece band , Al Nighter and the Dandy Dave Drummers... Short thanks alots were then inaudibly extended by the usually loquacious Great Leader, "Fourway" followed by a spontaneous celebratory Rotarian heathen version of a Freebird Conga line, which wound and rumbled its reptilian Pagan path rhythmically, ok provocatively, around the dance floor.... ImP Pres Karen then passed the enchanted eternal continuity " Golden Pins of Mordor" and (Gift gag-bags) from Pres to Pres Elect Keith M under the auspicious evil eye, and all watching blade, of the inflated Charon himself..( Precious, my PRECIOuS..) The final "coup d grace" came when Al , as first KNight , ceremoniously sent The magic Nordic "Walkabout Lance of Hadenoughyet" to an honored Viking eternity , by sacred immolation, sending the ashes to rest hopefully forever, forever to be unseen again, by human or Rotarian evil Eye, in the pounding fires of Valhalla. In Other words we all had a great time, Kelly got retired to Past President and a new Day dawns under the Rule of the Duracell Grandpa, Keith.
Posted by Rex Manson on Jun 09, 2011 Today we held a successful " Why Rotary " Day roundtable where 14 Potential Rotarian guests were hosted to a "free lunch" then subjected, once trapped, to the history, purpose and contributions of the CAP Rotary.( We got the small room anyhow.. How.. intimate) President Kelly ( I am BEOWOLF!) explained the importance of the Four Way Test and Introduced the Club's new successful thumping/ rhythmic songs of his Pagan Lutheran past unto the eardrums of our unsuspecting guests. Good Job Beowolf! Then President elect, Keith( the Duracel Grandpa,) explained the IntraNational, Regional and Local Projects that CAP ( Guatemala) participates/and contributes to. THEN..(Just to add to the frothing excitement) Lori Mullen (the Lion Tamer) was called upon to briefly speak on the FIJI Project (which may become the ( Shush!) Kenya Project This was followed by the CAP God father, ex district Rotary Gov John who attempted to address the now myriad Paul Harris Foundations. Club Disbursment Chair Claire M spoke for the efficacy of the newly Reformed/Grants Committee guidelines and the 14 local non profits we supported in 2011. All in All a successful meeting and perhaps we attracted some new Members. Time will tell.
Posted by Rex Manson on Jun 16, 2011 Not everyday you hear about the most super top secret aircraft research ever conducted by these United States. Our Guest, Dr. Alan Brown, Past lead Engineer for the Skunkworks kept the room transfixed as he tried to explain the design challenges of the experimental F-117 Fighter known as " Stealth". He explained the tribulations of working daily with the Air Force Creme Test Pilots and top administrators from the Super Secret '"Skunkworks" from Lockheed Aircrafts Research( Burbank) and Design Division. Rules for building Stealth.. Borrow everything possible, No risky Epoxy transmutation.. Make the impossible work. Build a Mach .08 Fighter bomber with the Radar Cross section of an Eagles Eyeball,( Really) Make a totally unstable diamond shaped anorchaic structure fly without any Standard Flight characteristics, add computers that react so fast that humans cannot possibly keep up then give the otherwise useless Test Pilot all of 1.2 Seconds to eject and Voila! The most secret stealthy fighter Bomber ever designed. Need less to say This Rotary club was weak kneed at the conclusion that came way.. too... fast. We could have asked useless questions for HOURS but ALAS...Due to the patience of Dr. Brown, one of the Great brain buster presentations in Several years.. Thanks Dr Brown.. I wish we could have understood a tenth of what you tried to explain about the F117 Stealth Bomber..and we never even got to the secrets of of the mysterious Pahrumph Nevada, Area 51.
Posted by Rex Manson on Jun 02, 2011 Melanie Schumacher and Bill Kocher from Soquel Creek and Santa Cruz Water came out to give us a presentation on Water conservation and the Planned Desal Plant in Santa Cruz. Scheduled to be constructed in 2013 the Plant using Reverse Osmosis, would supplement the water available during years of Drought. It is clear the conservation of resources will never match the need and expected demand in this drought prone area. This is a Preliminary plan which anticipates a cost measure that will not affect the average user by more than 3% per year. We will see.
Posted by Rex Manson Two and one half days of Blues and Rock and Roll By the STARS!.. Sometimes Music played so loud that earplugs were advisable , which rocked Aptos this weekend ( ask my Newly Half Deaf dog in Rio del Mar!) .. Thousands of Local and rocker Fans enjoyed/ Survived a panoply of Woodstock like challenging clear blue skies, Rain, chilling wind and muggy afternoon sunshine to hear some of the Best Jimmy Hendrix memorial music ever to be heard live on the central Kali Coast. Of course CAP Rotary helped oil the wheels of celebration by the presence of a majority of it's membership who served our community again by volunteering to operate the Beverages concession. Good for Us, and Better for those many local Non Profits we support, and good Service by us recognized by the frequently expressed appreciation by the Locals: Good for the Music of the Santa Cruz Community. First it was the removal of protective stipulations by SEC/ Congress then a unsecured CDO contrivance where Investment Banks made profits on Both sides of the Mortgage market and Finally the collapse of the banking system on Wall Street. WOW if half of what he told us was true then the economy may take 5 more years to recover if it ever does and The Loss of Wealth by Middle class investors will continue to drain the security of current retirees.

Miles of track were laid thru an engineering nightmare of switchbacks and steep grades so the lumber could be harvested. Pictures from the Aptos history Museum provided a visual trail from the old to the modern where cities in Loma Prieta once thrived now the area has been restored to nature. Thanks Brian we hope to see you again. And also thanks again Brian it was nice to meet your Mother. |

Posted by Rex Manson Today we had to Improvise as our scheduled speaker cancelled with all of two hours until Showtime. So we turned the traditional tables, Kept up the " Nuts" trooper Holiday spirit, made lemonade and had two of our most prominent long serving Ex Pres Members get interviewed by " David Frost" Keith about themselves for the benefit and amusement of all the Red Badge newbe's....I am sure everyone was exhilerated by Sam Nigh's "vague" recollection of his "Animal House" Rock and Roll band adventures in the North east girls college, surfer band circuit, driving the Painted Cadillac Hearst in the sixties ( early Prankster?)... What was that? Uranus and the five Planets? Then" Grand Wizard the Grey" Bill Potter shared his paper salesman to real estate mogul climb thru history from Oregon to the Golden State with Sigma Chi.. Ah those bygone wild west days! Actually the experiment went well and was both good for Fellowship and all members still awake at the end seemed pleased. At least they all seemed cogent and smiled. Keep a Watch out as when speakers throw the Speaker Coordinator under the bus at the very last minute.. this may be what you get...so prepare!(grins).
Posted by Rex Manson Today members of the Capitola Task force on Local gangs gave us a welcome overview of the local Gangs of Santa Cruz / Aptos. Mr. Zwerling made no apologies about being the sole central coast platform for Radio broadcasters like Alex Jones and Rush Limbaugh. He made it clear that The station tended to the conservative but revealed a more balanced talk show format than most CAP Rotarians were aware of. Long regarded as an essential emergency beacon for Santa Cruz/ Monterey I think it is fair to say Mr. Zwerling supports a fair balanced sober but always independent discussion of political issues. Thanks for coming today Micheal we hope you will join us again.
