Welcome to Topeka South Rotary

Due to a lower than normal number of attendees at the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy (RYLA), the deadline for applications to be submitted this year has been changed to May 25th. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who will be a high school sophomore, junior, or senior next year to learn leadership skills and the importance of community involvement. RYLA will be held on the KU campus on June 3-7th.  If you know of someone who may benefit from attending RYLA (i.e. your child, grandchild, friend or student) please contact Faron Barr at 231-9921 or e-mail at fbarr@t-mfinancial.com.

Sole Mates continues to big a huge success. Many smiles, and many happy feet, including some kids hopping around the store like bunnies in their new shoes. It is definitely a must see, so we have added a new album to our website for the most recent event. If you haven't visited our photo albums scroll down on the website and you will see the albums in the right column.

India has been removed from the polio-endemic list by WHO. It's a tremendous accomplishment that shows we can End Polio Now.

"If every country follows the model set by the Indian government, we will soon achieve global eradication of the virus," said William Boyd, Rotary Foundation chair. RI partnered with the Indian government in the polio campaign, along with WHO, Gates Foundation, and UNICEF.

This is just a friendly reminder that make-ups must be completed within two weeks before or after the missed meeting. If you don't make it to a meeting to report them you can send an email to jsorensen@cstonegroup.com.
Posted by Paul Bossert

Jeff Sorenson has replaced Paige Eikert as the Club Secretary. If you need to report make-ups please report them to Jeff at jsorensen@cstonegroup.com.

It is important from a district reporting standpoint that our club reports accurate and strong attendance numbers. Even if you are in good standing attendance wise, there may be events or meetings that you attend and don't report that could bump up individual attendace success. it is important that you report your make-ups so we can continue to report increasinglyl successful numbers and report more members with perfect attendance.

DVDs For Vets is an excellent way to clear the shelves ofunwanted DVDs and to benefit those who have served our country!   In addition to providing entertaining DVDsfor use in the VA Hospital, money donated to the project will be used tobuy  portable DVD players for use at thebedside of those veterans whose worlds are greatly limited by illness anddisability.   What an excellent way toopen up their world by providing much needed distraction. It has been shownthat 15 minutes of laughter reduces the perception of pain for hours!

THE DETAILS: The project runs through Friday,  December 16. Bring any commercially produced DVD to Friday's TSR meeting. No VHStapes please.  Cash donations in anyamount are welcome.  Make the check outto TSR with" DVDs for Vets"on the memo line.  If you have a working PORTABLE DVD player todonate, it would be most welcomed! Consider putting up this content in your Facebook or Twitter to involveyour circle of people in the project. For any questions, please contact JamesSlover at jestopeka@aol.com or text/call845-4901.

Sole Mates 01
Sole Mates 02

Eight timid students arrived at Payless Wednesday intattered shoes and flip flops and left 30 minutes later with huge smiles ontheir faces and brand new shoes and socks on their feet. The nine TSR Rotarianswho assisted them in choosing the right sized tennis shoe were all grins too.Of course, the smile could be because their student FINALLY chose a shoe and itwas available in the right size!

Our first Sole Mates outing was a success thanks to thePayless employees who measured feet and the 9 Rotarians who were paired withthe students. The students and their teachers came from Quincy Elementary andScott Magnet school and earned the privilege to get a new pair of shoes andsocks by performing a chore in class or in the cafeteria. The students wereexcited to share the details of their accomplishments with us.

Thank you to the following Rotarians who assisted on thefirst Shoe Day:

Craig Beougher

Cristina Carper

Faron Barr

Karen Gehle

Jamie Stafford

Barb Ballentine

Joe Beuerlein

Bill Conn

Patti Bossert

The next Sole Mates Shoe Day is October 26th @2:00 pm at the north Topeka store.

Through the participation and donations from our members and friends, we were able to raise more than $1900. A small portion will go towards administration and a large donation will be made to the Rotary International Foundation. Thanks to James Slover, all those that volunteered, and all who participated to make this a continued success for the second year in a row.
