We had an excellent presentation on AB 109, the State issue involving the release of prisoners back into the communities throughout California. Thanks to Vicki Abney and  Jennifer Cross, who can be reached at 530-225-2020 (should you have questions) for a clear and concise presentation....and thanks to Cathy for arranging the program. A lot of excellent information on the impact of this Bill on our area, on our jails, on our parole and probation system, and on our safety in general. Well done, folks.

This week we will hear about AB109 which is the prison realignment bill....and the implications for Shasta County. This is a very interesting, and to a degree controversial, bill... and our program will allow for comments and questions...and there will probably be plenty of both. As stated on the Governor's webpage...."AB 109 makes fundamental changes to California’s correctional system to stop the costly, ineffective and unsafe "revolving door" of lower-level offenders and parole violators through our state prisons". Should be interesting for all.

Our weekly meeting program this week was presented by Tom Smith, father of our own Tom Smith, on the subject of recycling, and Big Foot Recycling in particular. Tom is one of the owners of this family run business, and he did a great job of explaining the recycling process in the North State. With 21 sites in the area, and employing 45 workers, they average about 40 customers a day at each site. The company theme of convenience, courtesy, and cleanliness is enforced at each site. Tom made the point of the value and benefits of a good recycling program and mentioned how they work in close cooperation with all government agencies in assist folks in the recycling efforts. Thanks, Tom, for a very interesting program.

At our April 11th weekly meeting we had James Rickert make a presentation on the Slow Food Movement. This is an international program to increase awareness of good eating, nutrition, and good health in general. James is part of the ownership of Prather Ranch which is headquartered in McDoel, CA...so James knows the subject of quality foods very well. The movement itself is growing as more and more people become aware of good eating and nutrition habits. It was a very informative meeting, and if you know James please tell him how much we appreciated the information.

This week will be hearing about the Slow Food Movement, which is a non-profit, eco-gastronomic organization that supports a biodiverse,  sustainable food supply, and rediscovery of the pleasures of the table.

Carlo Petrini founded Slow Food as a response to the opening of a McDonald's in Rome's historic Piazza di Spagna in 1986. Since then, Slow Food has grown into an international movement with more than 83,000 members in 100 countries worldwide International Slow Food Movement.

As Dick Yoder says...the program is about " better nutrition and healthy eating"

This should be a very interesting program...that I, for one, have never heard about...and we have a chapter here in Redding. See you at the meeting.

On April 18th, the weekly Wednesday's meeting with feature the topic "All About Recycling" presented by Big Foot Recycling. This should be most interesting as we hear what the latest is on procedures, legal implications, and what the business is all about. Tom Smith is coordinating what should be a very good program. Last week, Fantasy Fountain at Kid's Kingdom was so well presented...and two weeks ago we had the excellent presentation of College Options...so we are "on a run" of good programs...and this week will be no different. Invite friends...they can be part of this fun, fellowship, and great food. See you Wednesday at noon.

GUESS WHO’S COMING TO DINNER – March 10, 2012
This has to be one of the best RER events.  Have dinner with three other couples, who you don’t know in advance are coming with a mystery host/hostess as well.  What a great way to get to know other Rotarians in a more intimate setting than a huge party.  Interested?  Call Marge Remedios to sign up!

CRAB FEED
Charlie Menoher thanked all those Rotarians who volunteered to help at the Shasta Women’s Refuge Crab Feed.
