Featured Speaker: Deputy Brian Shiverdecker, was introduced by Rotarian Mark Shepard. Shiverdecker has been with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office for 8 years and is currently assigned to the Harrison Township area where he is part of Road Patrol Pro Active Services. He is also a member of the Community Initiative to Reduce Gun Violence (CIRGV) task force and handles all gang intelligence for the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office. Brian was accompanied and assisted by Deputy Kyle Baranyi.
Gang activity in Montgomery County is much greater than most citizens are aware. The influx of drug cartels originating in the country's southern most states are spawning gang growth in the Midwest. The Cartels are the suppliers and local gangs are distributors. It's a very lucrative and dangerous business. The most well known gangs (Crips and Bloods) originating on the west coast have numerous affiliates throughout the U.S., including our region. A slide presentation of how gang members identify themselves was a bit disturbing and members are likely to look for the described "tagging" in our landscape. Current illegal drug products continue to escalate in potency and their ability to kill.
Rotary District 6670 is once again focusing on all Clubs collecting shoes for delivery to the District Conference on April 4th. Rotarian Doug Arp will head up this effort for our Club. Shoes in all youth sizes and appropriate for tropical climates are requested. They need not be expensive and you can get multiple pairs for $20 at Walmart. If you don't have time to shop for them yourself, Doug will accept your cash donation and purchase them for you. Please bring your purchases to meetings and they will be transported to District Conference in April. We did this a few years ago and ranked right at the top for collections.
Shoes for Orphan Souls®, the largest humanitarian aid project of Buckner International, provides new shoes and socks to orphans and vulnerable children in the United States and throughout the world. Since 1999, more than 2.5 million pairs of new shoes and socks have been distributed to children in 76 countries.
Program Director Needs Your Help! Every Rotarian is requested to schedule at least one interesting speaker/program during the 2013-2014 Rotary Year.
