Green Tree Rotary gave dictionaries to 430 third grade students in local elementary schools.  This is part of The Dictionary Project, which is a national program working to put dictionaries in the hands of third grade students throughout the country.  The goal of this program is to assist all students in becoming good writers, active readers, creative thinkers, and resourceful learners by providing them with their own personal dictionary. The dictionaries are a gift to each student to use at school and at home for years to come. Educators see third grade as the dividing line between learning to read and reading to learn, so we encourage our sponsors to give dictionaries each year to children in the third grade.  We gave dictionaries to the students at Pittsburgh Westwood, Langley, Banksville, and Weil Elementary Schools, St Margaret of Scotland Elementary School and Keystone Oaks Elementary Schools, Aiken, Dormont and Myrtle Elementary Schools.  The children loved them.

Green Tree Rotary enjoyed a very successful Golf Outing at Chartiers Country Club on Monday, July 16, 2012.  We had 127 golfers enjoying the beautiful golf course.  It was a very warm day but everyone seemed to be having a great time.  After a great day golfing, everyone moved inside (to the airconditioning) and a delicious dinner served up by the Chartiers Country Club's wonderful chef.  Take a look at our photo album of the day's golfers.

We gave free books to the students at Shaeffer Intermediate School, grades 4-8, in Sheraden on Tuesday, April 10, 2012.  Each child was able to choose 4-5 free books of interest to them.  We are also giving 500 preschool books to Allegheny County's Headstart Program, for the children to take home with them.  On April 20, we gave books to the children at the Boys & Girls Club in Carnegie's afterschool program.  We received the leftover books from the Pleasant Hills Library Book Sale and the book sale at Castle Shannon Library and are giving them to children in underpriviliged neighborhoods.  This is recycling at its best!

Green Tree Rotary held a Free Book Fair at Thaddeus Stevens Elementary in the Elliott neighborhood of Pittsburgh in January, 2012.  Green Tree Rotary collected gently-used books throughout the year.  The books were sorted by age group, and the children were able to each pick four free books. The children were thrilled.  Many of these children did not have many books to call their own.  We’re trying to change that!
