Every spring, the University of Oklahoma (OU) Rotaract Club does its part to help in Rotary International’s fight to eradicate polio through the PolioPlus Campaign. Since its inception in 1985, the PolioPlus program has helped save the lives of more than two billion children. The thought of a polio free world is what inspired Rotary International’s PolioPlus program and it is what continues to fuel it.

Like past years, the OU Rotaractors will hold their PolioPlus Week on Campus with events every day on the south Oval to raise money for and awareness of PolioPlus. The culmination of  PolioPlus week is The OU Rotaract  PolioPlus Benefit Banquet. This is their largest event and fundraiser for the year. Support their enthusiasm and hard work as they are potential Rotarians and hope for the future of Rotary.

Speaker:               John F. Germ, current vice chair of Fund Development for PolioPlus
Date:                     April 16th, doors open at 6PM
Time:                    Dinner starts at 7PM
Location:               The Associates Room - 3rd floor - The Oklahoma Memorial Union at The University of Oklahoma

Rotary District 5770 participated in the 28th Lone Star Presidents-Elect Training Seminar (PETS) at the DFW Airport in Dallas.  Presidents-elect were trained in every aspect of Rotary to help them be better equipped to handle responsibilities as club president.  In addition to the formal training, participants had the opportunity to visit vendors selling Rotary products, heard motivational speakers, and had the opportunity to meet and hear Rotary international (RI) leaders.  Featured speakers were our own District5770 RI President Ron Burton and RI President-elect Gary Huang from Taiwan.

In prior years district 5770 participated as an invited guest.  2014 is the first year that the district is a sanctioned member of the organization.  Lone Star PETS serves nine Texas districts and district 5770 from Oklahoma.  Currently there is a total of 576 Rotary clubs encouraged to participate at this event.  District 5770 has 34 clubs with 24 in attendance this year.  District presidents-elect met with governor-elect Bob Dill on Friday and then on Saturday in small groups based on club size with clubs from the other districts.  Some members of the district 5770 Leadership Team served as volunteer presenters and discussion leaders.

The Oklahoma legislature honored Ron Burton on March 10 in the State Capitol Senate Chambers. Ron was there and personally accepted the proclamation and a good showing of Oklahoma Rotarians were in attendance.  The Senate sponsor was Sen. Rob Standridge of Norman. He is a member of the Norman Rotary Club which is Ron's home Rotary club.  A reception which included Rotarians followed the presentation.

RI President Ron Burton and Governor Terry Godfrey are asking all District 5770 Rotary Clubs to take advantage of a new program called Rotary Club Central.  The program assists Rotary clubs to plan and track service projects -- from beginning to end.  President Burton challenges D5770 clubs to be the first district to accomplish 100% participation of all clubs.  Clubs should be using this program to Engage Rotary and Change Lives.

It may seem early, but NOW IS THE TIME TO START RECRUITING OUTBOUND ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE STUDENTS FOR THE 2014-15 SCHOOL YEAR.

The Rotary Youth Exchange Program does not happen without your club's support.  Rotary clubs are asked to recruit students in their communities.  Suggested recruitment sources are school langauge teachers, Interact, RYLA, church groups, news promotions and your own club or family contacts.

In order to obtain exchanges for your long term outbound students ages 15 1/2 to 18 1/2 , the district interview process has been moved to November from January as it has been in the past.  Long Term Applications are due to the district no later than Oct 30,2013.

There are also some short term exchanges that occur during the summer.  One month of family to family visiting between and exchange student and a foreign host family with a student.  These exchanges are from ages 14-19.

Details about the Youth Exchange program are found in the left column of this page.  Under SITE PAGES, click on the ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE link.

If you would like to have a club program on Youth Exchange, or need posters to put up at schools, or need more information about the program itself. Please contact Jaci Williams at jacywilliams5770@yahoo.com or Russ Davoren rdavo@cox.net
