It’s Friday morning—the first hours of the Thousand Smiles Dental/Surgical clinic. I’m already weary from the month’s advance work it takes to prepare for this quarterly event… As I walk through the crowds of families lining up to see the doctors and dentists, I silently berate myself… I don’t know why I think I have had to do this for the past 20 years; my frustrated husband gets angry with me; my children think I’m nuts; my friends tell me Mexico is too violent and dangerous….  And I’m not a medical or dental person…I am just the clinic coordinator. I jokingly refer to myself as the “janitor”.

For over a century, Rotary has been making making a difference in the world by changing lives.  How did all of that happen. To find out, join our District’s unique Leadership & Development Academy (LDA). This is our 13th year. There are now over 450 LDA graduates of LDA.

A future LDA student?

LDA is an interesting 8 month study program with 4 interactive lessons of Rotary information, designed for those who wish to serve more effectively as Roarians and leaders within the club, district and world. Course material will be distributed to enrollees in September, 2014.  During the Academy year, four intriguing sessions will be held for all students with discussion and  learning.  Graduation will be in June 2015, with special LDA Pins and certificates.  Registration deadline is August 15, 2014.  Click here for the Registration Page where there is also a link to the Class Schedule.   If you would like more information contact Dale at the Rotary Office.  619-298-5340

Carlsbad, Mission Bay, and United Services Rotarians Open A New Cleft Treatment Center

Ancient Stone Carving with Jade Eyes Showing A Cleft Lip Facial Deformity

In early February of 2014, Rotarian Dr. Jeff Moses, an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon  and his wife, Maribel Vargas, acting as clinic coordinator, led a Rotarian site visit and surgical team to open a new charitable children’s Cleft Facial Deformities treatment center in the remote Mayan Community of Calakmul-Xpujil.  This community is  located near the ancient ruins of Becan and Calakmul located in the Mexican State of Campeche at the base of the Yucatan.  These areas were only recently uncovered and cited for archeological significance as being the only ones with Obelisks recording the history of the rulers and identifying them as the conquerors of the inhabitants of Palenque, Mexico.  “Centuries of genetics favoring the incidence of Cleft Lip and Palate deformities has led to the presence of a large need for surgical-dental assistance  for these children afflicted with facial-cleft deformities located within the native Mayan communities in this region”, states Dr. Moses.<

l to r: PDG Sandi Rimer and TRF Trustee Steve Brown

Past District Governor Sandi Rimer was awarded The Rotary Foundation Distinguished Service Award at the Governor's Dinner on June 24, 2014. This award is given each year to 50 or fewer recipients out of 1.2 million Rotarians around the world.

Sandi has been involved with International Service for many years.  She led a GSE team to Ecuador, was GSE chair for the district, led a water grant for Ecuador. She also did a village banking project, worked to make multiple grants focused on AIDS orphans in South Africa that culminated in water projects, food projects and agricultural projects totaling $350,000 dollars in one year. Her steady involvement in all aspects of the Foundation over multiple years. Her passion for the children of Africa, and the lives that she changed for the better have made her the perfect recipient for this award.

Well done, Sandi!

l to r: Mr. Makato Ihara, DGE Janice Kurth, Matt Kurth

In April ofthis year a vocational training team (VTT) from Rotary District 2770 in Japan was here in San Diego to study how  health care is delivered to the elderly, with emphasis on dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.  Dr. Janice Kurth, District 5340 VTT chair set up important meetings with health care providers and researchers for this training team.

In recognition for her efforts, Dr. Kurth and her husband Matt were the special guests at the District 2770 Governor’s Dinner in Sydney, Australia.  This dinner was held the evening before the Rotary International Convention began in Sydney.

DGE Janice was asked to address this meeting. Of course, her remarks had to be translated by Mr. Makato Ihara, the District 2770 VTT leader and DGE 2015-16 for District 2770.

Good food and Australian wine helped mark a special evening of international fellowship. Janice said: " At the end of the evening, all in attendance made a circle and held hands and sang a Japanese Rotary song – the only work I knew was “Rotary”.

(L-R) Darlene Bates, Bob Self, Larry Edwards, Bill Turnquist, Old Mission Rotary President Steve Nuñez, Michael New (CEO of  K-9 Friendly Visitors) and Art Pratt Foundation President Stan Vogelsang.  Amos the collie looks on approvingly.

We have all heard of seeing eye dogs but what if a person needs a pair of ears?

On June 17, the Art Pratt Foundation of Old Mission Rotary presented a grant of $2000 to K-9 Friendly Visitors. This non profit provides service dogs to the deaf, hard of hearing, disabled and to people with special needs.

The Art Pratt Grant focuses on dogs that serve as ears for deaf masters. The dogs alert their masters when the door bell rings, an alarm clock goes off, the telephone rings and even when the tea kettle whistles! Collies are used exclusively for the program because of their natural ability to herd people away from danger.

Under the leadership of District Interact Chair, Marty Rosenstein (La Jolla Golden Triangle RC), the Interact Clubs in the District have formed  an Interact District Council. This is the format called for by Rotary International. Their first meeting was at UCSD in February. At that meeting  they held  a Strategic Planning session to help them form their first District Council government. They elected officers for this year.  In March, the Interact Advisors met in the morning at the District Training Assembly. Interactors joined the advisors in the afternoon to plan their event calendar.

(L-R) Bill Turnquist, Art Pratt Foundation president Stan Vogelsang, Workshop for Warriors Founder and Chairman Hernán Luis y Prado, Old Mission Rotary President Steve Nuñez and Workshop for Warriors graduate and young Marine Mike Casey.

Old Mission Rotary was so impressed and inspired by a club program by Workshops for Warriors that the Art Pratt Foundation of Old Mission Rotary went into overdrive to research and approve a $25,000 grant. The photo above shows the check presentation ceremony on January 28, 2014. the

The money was necessary to trigger matching funds from  Reliance Steel and a local shipyard for a ventilation system that will allow Workshops for Warriors to triple their class size from six to eighteen students. Workshops for Warriors assists the transition of veterans and injured veterans into civilian life through mentoring, training, and education.
