Thanks to all who participated in making this posible. |

| Posted by Donald Smith Jr. on May 31, 2011 The last time we gathered our speaker was Hugh Margesson. He represents Sasabe Avansando. Their efforts are to attempt to help and change, for the better, the town of Sasabe, Arizona and Sonora. Hugh is from San Clamente, California and has made many trips here on a humanitarian mission to help the people of Sasabe. Education breaks down at about middle school age. they have supplied paper, school supplies and over 200 back packs to the children there. In the past Sasabe used to be a town that produced bricks which probable was the supply for most of the homes in Green Valley. Today schools are having a hard time, businesses are closing and only about 20% of the town is functioning. About 200 people a day there have no food. Recently an individual from Altar has purchased much of the land on both sides of the border as a ranch. Maybe this will help change Sasabe. Very interesting program. |
| Posted by Blaine Moyer on May 31, 2011 There has been a great deal of confusion about whether or not our Club was permitted to hold fund raising events to supplement our Club Budget. During our budget meeting this morning I called Rotary International and talked to John M. Hannes, Coordinator, Club and District Support for Central Pan America. After a very pleasant and informative conversation with Mr. Hannes he sent me the following email message: Club President-elect Blaine: Greetings from Rotary International, and thank you for your phone call! Again, my name is John, and I am a Coordinator with Club and District Support, Central Pan America, which works with your district. As we discussed in our phone conversation, your club is able to hold a fundraiser in which the money raised would benefit the club budget, provided that the club is up-front in explaining where the money is going (in the interest of transparency). In other words, when looking at advertisement or hearing about the fundraiser, there should be no confusion from any participant as to where their donations are going. If the above is unclear, or if you have more questions, please let me know! Best regards, John M. Hannes Coordinator, Club and District Support Central Pan America This is great information and will be of benefit to the Club in the years to come. Mr. Hannes also passed along all of his contact information and explained to me that he was our point of contact at Rotary International for any questions we might have. I have to say I was quite impressed. Blaine

All in all they offer 20 different things for families, parents and children. We are very lucky to have such a program in our community. Thanx Jennifer for your presentation to Rio Rico Rotary |

It was the brainchild of Blaine and we thank him for that. Almost 100% of the club participated. The food was great and the participation for the roping was pretty darn good considerig the weather. Riders and their families had fun and so did our club. We made some money too! The saddles as prizes came out great! The buckles are a work of art and everything fell into place. Thanx to all who helped. Again it was a fun and fund raiser. |

| Posted by Donald Smith Jr. on Feb 15, 2011 Welcome to the club! Debbi Caballero is now a member of Rio Rico Rotary. Sponsored by Don Smith we have learned that she is primed and ready to be a great Rotarian. She is working rapidly to become a true blue badge member. She was concerned when business kept her from having perfect attendance but made a special effort to attend our most recent board meeting not only to watch our board in action but also to maintain her attendance. Great job Debbi. |

| Posted by Donald Smith Jr. on Jan 19, 2011 Our program last week was Lucas Behrans our exchange student from Germany. Every outbound and inbound Rotary exchange student is required to make a formal presentation to their host club. Last week we enjoyed Lucas telling us about his homeland. Rio Rico High School really appreciates his talent on the basketball court and he is blending in well in our community. Lucas is from a land of 81 million people. The currency for Germany and all of Europe is the Euro. There are 2065 cities in Germany and Berlin has a population of 3.4 million. We learned that there is a President of Germany but is really a figure head that only signs bills. The real decision making is made by the Chancellor. Transportation all over Germany is good with great roads and very fine train systems. We enjoyed viewing maps and learning about the history of Lucas' home country. |
| Posted by Donald Smith Jr. on Jan 05, 2011 Last week Phil Silvers was our program. It was a special Rio Rico Rotary honor to have Phil with us. He recenty served as a RI director from 2008 to 2010. There is only 17 directors world wide out of 1.2 million Rotarians around the world. Phil and Kathleen were instrumental in establishing Rotary in Russia and Phil was a key player in starting the Ramallah Rotary Club in the Palestinian West Bank. Phil and Kathleen have been invited to be speakers at regional and district Rotary events in a number of countries. Phil has a Ph.D. and Kathleen has a Ph.D. in education. Phil was with us to tell us a little about the history of District 5500. The 100th Rotary Club in the world was the Phoenix 100 club established in 1914. In 1920 the Mesa club was established. It was 1921 when Rotary began to get a foot hold in southern Arizona. That year Miami, Nogales and Tucson Rotary clubs were established. In 1947 the first 2nd city club was chartered in Tucson. That was the Catalina Club. What a great program we enjoyed last week. Makes you feel like inviting a friend to Rotary. |
